View Full Version : Confirmation of previously held beliefs?

I thought it would be fun to have a thread on which aspects of your previously held beliefs seemed to be confirmed by a raw food lifestyle.

For me, I'm an Objectivist. I believe this is all we've got so we better have fun. I also believe that there is no mind/body dichotomy. I have had this confirmed by raw foods. Many of the gurus out there will tell you this over and over. If your mind isn't clean, nor will your body be well. I've also read others on this board talk about mental or spiritual detox through tears. They are all spot on.

I also have always been a "live to eat" vs. "eat to live" type. I thought I'd be giving up so much pleasure if I went raw. But I've discovered that there's so much more pleasure to be had raw than cooked!

How about you?

Well the only thing I can think of is that I've always disliked cooked apples, peaches, and pears. So I was always lefted out when my mom or dad cooked their southern pies. Tasting those cooked fruits in there was disgusting to me! So I've always thought those fruits in their cooked form just wasn't "right" since it made them taste so bad!

Ayn Rand was the creator of Objectivism.

Which book I would recommend depends on what your preferred reading material may be.

Her novel Atlas Shrugged is sort of considered the complete philosophy in story form.

I'm not sure - I've seen the most unhealthiest of people being brilliant scholars, teachers, scientists. They look very sickly and overweight. I often like to ponder how much more intellect they could hold on a clean diet.

Personally like The Fountainhead. Have read it numerous times and have it on audio also. :)

You're still the one Sachis. <G>

Reading your post, I feel like I'm missing something, like I'm not quite following where you're going...

Sounds like you're saying that mind and body are one and you've had this confirmed with your raw foods journey?

Bingo. That's exactly what I was trying to say. Leave it to me to mess it up with too many words!

So many people believe that pureness comes from transcending ones body. I personally believe that it's neither possible nor healthy to try.

Really? Wow. How interesting. Are you saying that purity's impossible or that purity doesn't come from transcending one's body? Or something else?

sachis2112

I think that purity cannot be achieved through trancending one's body. I believe that, to ignore the body for the sake of improvement of the mind is counter-intuitive.

A good example... most people experience an amazing happiness a couple weeks after going raw. I certainly did and that's how I had my beliefs confirmed.... part of it, anyhow.

Most self-help or mental health people will tell you that your mind cannot be clean unless your body is as well. You can't separate the two. You must pay attention to both at the same time and help one by helping the other.

*nods to Sachis*

Without the body there is no mind sooo, how does on "transcend" the body? ... and what does one mean by "purity"? Living in a polluted atmosphere where one needs to purify their water; wash even organic produce; breath polluted air....purity?

Mentally and emotionally one can only go so far with raw. If they don't integrate all the sub-personalities running their world, stop reading newspapers, watching t.v. with it's commercials and bad news, etc., it's hard to be just healthy.

"Smoking is every person's moral duty in order to uphold and promote capitalism." --- Ayn Rand

This is one reason why I am not a big fan of Ayn Rand.

In addressing the original question of the topic, my beliefs have been mostly magnified by being raw. I was always a lover of nature and food but now it seems much more apart of me than ever before. Eating has now become almost a spiritual ritual now for me. I now am more adventurous with my eating such as eating more exotic foods like durian, young coconut, and goji berries which 4 years ago when I went vegan, would never have thought of eating. The next thing I think I might try is harvesting wild plants like burdock which have a root that is often harvested in Asia. After that, who knows.

Please tell me where she said that. I think I've heard that once before but I have all her publications and I'd like to find it for myself.

It was eventually her own undoing. Even after she became terribly ill, she was unable to find a way to quit. But please keep in mind where medicine and science were in the 30's and 40's. That's when she likely started smoking.

Not sure what part you don't like ~ the smoking or the capitalism.

My guess is the smoking since this is a raw site. I think that most people who believe that the mind and body are not seperable also believe in capitalism (they don't want anyone violating their phycial rights).

As far as raw people smoking, I don't know if many raw people do that or not, yet, I don't "believe" in capitalism ~ or anything else. The mind and body are NOT separable (ever seen a "mind" w/out a body? ..or seen a mind at all?) Things is as they is and belief doesn't change that ~ 'cept in their minds (w/out the body, of course). :p
