So I happened to turn on the television tonight, and Dr. Oz and his colleague are on the Oprah Winfrey show talking about Anti-aging.

One thing caught my attention. His "Green Drink."

In essence, it is a concoction of spinach, celery, cucumber, an apple, ginger and lemon.

Not too different from a green smoothie, is it?:D

Sounds like a green smoothie to me! I think he was on there drinking green smoothies with Kris Carr from Crazy Sexy Cancer in the last week or so! Exciting!

Hi,

Just finished watching Oprah and am wondering what you all out there think of combining fruit and veggies in a green drink as Dr. Oz did today by putting an apple in it, also a lemon I think. I am a lurker. Have been reading with great interest Shazzie's journal. I used to do the New Beverly Hills diet by Judy Mazel (she just died, by the way). That "pineapple - food combining" diet of hers made me feel so alive and I did lose weight quickly but I didn't stick to it. Am trying to decide whether or not to go raw. So confused by all the information out there.
Thanks for any feedback.

Sue.

Hey Sue! Welcome! I know what you mean about the abundance of information...there is so much out there, it's hard to filter it all. As far as putting fruit in green drinks/smoothies, many here add fruit with the greens to make it more palatable, and build up to adding more greens than fruit. I personally don't see any problem with it! As it so happens, I'm drinking one right now with some banana in it, so there you go! You have to like the taste if you're going to drink/eat it, so I say do what feels right! As far as deciding whether or not to go raw, you'll find all sorts of great guidance from Alissa's book (I know, it's her site, but I SWEAR I'm not just saying that.....it's a really great resource, and answers tonnes of questions), so if you don't have it, I highly suggest it! I read Shazzie's blog too.....she is a great inspiration as well! If you feel overwhelmed with going all raw at once, try adding a bit of raw food day by day, or week by week, whatever, and eventually, you'll be eating more raw than cooked, and it won't seem like such a huge jump! Good luck on your journey, and hope to see you around!

I like green smoothies but the only way I have been able to tolerate them so far is with a little fruit. ;) I love the taste and I am more inclined to drink it.;)

Welcome! I lurked for a while before I made a committment, as well.

You are right in that there is so much information out there. I tried all sorts of different diets to improve ailments and to lose weight. Here is what I concluded about going raw:

How on earth can you go wrong with the food provided in nature, as it is provided in nature?

I just have yet to find a reason not to do it...and am witnessing first hand every reason to do it...

Jump in! You won't regret it.

I use spinach and all sorts of yummy fruits. I also use cucumbers, carrots, celery...

One of my absolute favorites is leafy green spinach, fresh blueberries and fresh ginger....YUM!

I'm a fruit combiner!! Water, frozen bananas, greens, dates, grapes, strawberries, pineapple ~ you name it! It's still better than a bagel. ;)

i totally agree. i find pineapple in a smoothie upsets my tummy a bit at times, so i use bananas, blueberries, cranberries... anything i have on hand actually and then spinach is a must... with some nutritional yeast, hemp hearts and bee pollen. yummmmmmmmmmy!!!

I just love Dr Oz and how he shares and untangles confusing medical information in layman's terms. I personally think he's a closet raw foodist and will come out eventually! He's made mention of that "green drink" on several of O's shows.

Just look at him, I think he's in his late 50's/early 60's but I could be wrong about this. He looks great and he appears to also have boundless energy.

How much do you wanna bet? He's into the lifestyle. ;)

I also noticed that O is getting plump again. Because over the summer she was much smaller. Not that it matters, but it's the yo-yo SAD dieting thing going on which is not good for the heart and organs at all. Perhaps Dr Oz will help her with this for the final time with his "green" suggestions. I commend them both for trying to educate the masses, even if some of the info is a bit skewed.

Actually, she did a show a few days ago as to why she's gained weight.....I believe it was to do with thyroid issues. I don't know the specifics, but Bob Greene was on CityLine (a Toronto "lifestyle" show), and he addressed Oprah's problem. Apparently she's eating well (well, healthy cooked), and exercises everyday, yet has this thyroid issue, so has gained.

Let's get Alissa on O !!!! I would pay money to see that show. Can you imagine a whole hour. Lets all write in to O's web site and tell her about Alissa and ask to have her on!!

Thanks very much for clarifying...I didn't know this about her thyroid. All the more reason she should look into eating more raw foods, but don't know if she will. :(

No prob! I agree.....more raw could likely ease her symptoms....I wonder what her diet consists of....you'd think with all the "health experts" around her, someone would mention a high raw diet as a way to heal......hmmmmm!

Hey, that's not a bad idea! I mean, look at all the people she reached on the Tyra Banks show (he he....*looks around sheepishly*....like, um, me!)...imagine how many people she could reach on Oprah!! I'll write her! Let's campaign!!

I think better yet, get O on Alissa's diet. Imagine what Oprah Goe RAW would do for the SAD masses, she is such an icon.

Hi. I'm new here. :)

Anyways, I read somewhere that Oprah in fact tried a diet of raw foods, but she didn't care for it. If I can find the article, I'll give a link. But, yes, it would be amazing if she tried this diet and stuck to it--her weight and thyroid would probably not be an issue.

anyways, couldn't find the article i wanted, but i did find these links:

here is a link about a raw food show Oprah had: http://www.oprah.com/xm/moz/200702/moz_20070220.jhtml

Karyn Calabrese on the Oprah show about raw foods: http://www.living-foods.com/oprah/

a mention of raw foods to lose weight quickly: http://www.oprah.com/omagazine/200611/omag_200611_expert_350_101.jhtml

I found this recipe online for the Dr. Oz Green Drink (I don't know if this is really the recipe or not!) but thought I'd post it. Great that he'd be suggesting this on national TV! I do think I'd be adding a bit more fruit or a date to this though, I find that this much celery would be a bit strong for me but it is a basic recipe that anyone could change to their taste.

4 Celery Stalks
1 Cucumber
1 Cup Spinach
1 Lemon
1 Lime (I don't think this was listed in the original list of ingredients)
1 Large Apple
1/2 Inch Piece of Ginger
Mix Everything Together In A Blender!
("A Little Parsley" was mentioned when he was describing it to Oprah but not in the list of specific amounts mentioned before the break.)

Still trying to learn how to do the quote, I did once. The way to use the quote and to have some fun playing with it is to use the "preview post" button before using the "submit" button.
