View Full Version : ideas for unhulled oats?
A while back, I bought some unhulled oats, having heard that the hulled ones you buy in the HFS aren't really raw, and thinking they would taste the same.
WRONG!
I made an oat bread recipe using the sprouted, unhulled oats and it was  . BLECK!
So I'm wondering if anyone has/has tried any other recipes using sprouted oats that tastes halfway decent. I paid too much for them to use for growing grass for the cats. ;)

I don't have an answer for you regarding the oats....sorry...BUT I would love the oat bread recipe, please? :)
OK, Walnutty, here's the recipe. It'll taste a lot better if you use the hulled oat groats (which I know aren't really raw, but whatcha gonna do?).
It's from The UnCookbook by Elizabeth Baker.
Oat Bread
2 cups sprouted oats
1/2 cup Brazil nuts, chopped
1 Tbsp dill seed
1 tsp salt
Finely grind oats. Mix all, and form. (She says to add rice or soy flour if needed to bind it, but of course flour isn't raw. I ground the oats and nuts together, and the nuts "butterized" and acted as the perfect binder.)
Hmmm...she says to refrigerate it, not dehydrate it, like I did. No wonder it turned out so dry!
And look here at the bottom of the page. She says to make it sweet, omit the nuts and seasoning and add 1/2 cup raisins or other dried fruit, chopped. I think I'll try that. I might like it a lot better.
Gee, the things you learn when you actually read the directions! ;)
