Has anyone had any experience getting cases of young coconuts delivered to their home? If so, what company did you use. The place I usually get my coconuts from is far away and I thought it might be easier to set up a regular delivery of them.

Thanks! :)

I am so glad you asked this. I sure hope someone knows as I cannot locate young ones in my area. I even went to some Asian markets and they were unable to help.

wow! just found this while I was doing a bit of online research myself:
Why we No Longer Use "Thai" Coconuts from the Tree of Life Cafe

While they are a good food, we no longer use the "Thai" Coconuts in our cuisine for the following reasons:

NON-ORGANIC Thai coconuts are not certified organic. Information that they are grown organically may not be true. From articles online it seems that fertilizer & pesticides are used in coconut farming. Therefore we would be supporting a non organic industry and ingesting non organic chemicals. Some companies claim to be organic.

FUNGICIDE DIP. Some coconuts are dipped for 5 minutes in a fungicide solution (such as formaldehyde or sodium metabisulphate) before exporting. This is to eliminate mold and bacteria during the "6-week" shipping process.

IRRADIATION Many feel that they may be irradiated during shipping process.

HYBRIDIZATION & SUGAR The Thai coconuts are said to be cross pollinated with palm tree. This makes them incredibly sweet.

SUSTAINABILITY What is the real impact of importing coconuts from Thailand? Fair trade labor, high food miles and chemical usage.

LABOR Highly labor intensive when opening in a commercial setting. High labor investment for harvesting, shaving, packaging, storage, distribution and shipping.

LOW QUALITY Over 30% are usually rotten. This indicated by a purple colored pulp/ water, black spots and pink on the outer husk.

I did feel a little bad about purchasing something that traveled so far, and I'm not so sure about the food standard where these come from. So I guess I'll try to order from the Raw Guru.com in three weeks. Currently, they are sold out.

You can get 4 to 5 coconuts for $38 (on the website above) - that is almost $8 per coconut for 5 - that is alot of money!

Oh that makes me sad to hear. I LOVE young coconuts and we can get 9 for $8.50 at our local farmers market. They are the best I've had..... but the info presented doesn't surprise me, I am sad to say. :(

I just found some young coconuts this weekend and plan to open one today. I hope they are good. It took forever to find some so I won't be able to eat them often anyway. Do they even have organic young coconuts?

Hi Justine, do you get yours at the Dekalb international farmers market? I pick up a case of 9 there each week! I'm guessing you do, since you quoted 8.50/9 :)

Yikes, I ate a young coconut the other day that the meat had a purpleish hue to it. I tasted it and it tasted fine so I blended it up in a smoothie.

I went to the link posted. It states they no longer sell coconuts online. It is very hard to find a young coconut in rural Wisconsin.

I bought two young coconuts, and one was no good and the other one was fine. I started buying atleast two of things when I started buying avocados. You just never know until you open something up. Anyway I was not really that crazy about the young coconut meat. It was white and jelly like. The water was okay. To my taste it was not worth the hassle of hunting them down and cracking them open (which I did pretty easily). I was totally impressed with my coconut cracking skills! Still over all I think I will pass on the young coconuts unless I need them for a recipe I want to make.

I'm not sure these people know what they are talking about. What does it mean to say, "Many feel they may be irradiated...?" Give me some solid prove, not a feeling.

Also, I've read in a few places, like my raw food recipe book, Real World, Real Food, that pink and/or purple pulp/water are very young coconuts. The rotten ones are gray inside and you should be able to smell or taste if it's not good.

I eat young coconuts almost every day and I have to honestly say, my health has improved. I have yet to come across a rotten one. If people have been throwing away the coconuts with pink or purple inside, they have been throwing away perfectly good and nutritious food. That purple jelly-like coconut goes great in a smoothie, or blend it up with some coconut water and lime and you have yogurt. If the coconut meat is really firm, I used it fresh in recipes or dehydrate it and have have my own raw coconut.

A good test is how does the food you're eating make you feel? I always feel a boost from the young coconuts so I know I'm getting something healthy.

As far as the other claims go I don't have enough information to say one way or the other.

I will NEVER again COMPLAIN about getting Best Brand young, white, thai coconuts at the Whole Foods Market down the street for $1.99 each. Those online sites are soooooo expensive. YIKES!!!

I do grueling physical labor and consuming a baby coconut in the morning definitely makes me feel better and gives me stamina; that's what I gotta go by. I'm so lucky I live near Eugene, Oregon, home of the hip!

I find Best Brands and other brand coconuts in San Francisco too, but I buy them at Asian markets anywhere from $1.29 to $0.99. Other stores run around $1.50. Yes! They must be in season so the prices went down. I still had to look for them though. Several stores didn't have them, but now I have several stores to buy them from, so for those who haven't found them I would keep trying. Some people have found them even in small towns.

I noticed a boost in energy too. That's why I started adding a cup of coconut water to my green smoothies every day. Not only does it help sweeten it a bit but it also gives me a feeling of well being that the green smoothie wasn't doing alone. (Although, the green smoothies were giving me a great boost in my health alone.) That's why I posted earlier. It's my two cents opinion on young coconuts, and I hope people won't eliminate them from their diet because of misinformation. ;) If I was eating a food that was irradiated or rotten it would not give me such a boost and make me feel better physically.

It's not delivery, but Whole Paycheck... I mean Whole Foods (health food store) has young coconuts. Still quite spendy though at about $2.99 ea  Some other smaller health food stores carry them as well, but it's best to just go in & ask whether or not they look at you sideways because they don't know what you're talking about. :D

We also get them at Asian markets ~ by the case(s). Ethnic markets tend to be waaaaaay less expensive that WF's. Going to get some today, actually.

Hmmm. Never have tried green coconuts like that. $1.50 is a good price if you can't get them otherwise... wondering what shipping would be though.

We've got many palm trees here but not seen coconuts on them.

Shipping is $38 to south texas UPS ground for 12pack of green coconuts. Not worth it for me.

I hate living in such a redneck rural place. No ethnic stores, no Whole Foods, no young coconuts, sparse organic foods in general. Just the brown ones and they are $1.99 each.

Kind of suffer the same. A few ethnic stores around here but none are healthy, H-E-B a Texas based grocercy chain usually has young coconuts from Melissa's, Best, or Aroma.

Nice find...I did manage to find a food wholesaler that can get brown coconuts for $28 a case of 20. Better than nothing I guess except I have to special order them so I can't pick out the good ones and leave the bad ones.

Wow that is super cheap... I would pay $2 with or without case for the White pentagon/cylindrical shaped young coconuts at H-E-B. I'm thinking of just buying from rawguru(green cocos) WHENEVER they're in stock, the shipping is like $48 but if I spend $100 I get free shipping I think.

I've looked into those as well, just not practical in cost, like Nick said.. I sometimes find them at HEB or Fiesta, but the few times I have found them they've tasted funky..so I stay away...

Yeah.... I don't know about H-E-B either, I am always questioning the composition of the coconuts too.

i buy them from a local market and i live in a very very very small town in bc canada. they order them in for me and i pay anywhere between $13 a case (9) and as high as $28.

individually they are sold here for $4+ each so i'm very happy with the deal i get by buying a case.

just ask you local markets... ask them if they can order you a case, cause often times they can. they just don't order them for themselves, but they'll bring them in for customers.
