Hi, I am newbie 5 day raw coming off a really bad SAD diet. Anyway, my issue is that today is my first saturday and i am being bombarded by wonderful smelling cooked food everywhere, from Whole Foods to the parking lot at World Market. I find that today i am feeling very agitated and craving some unknown food. My hubby, still embracing a SAD diet, has been very supportive today offering me apples but i simply dont want one. (apples were all that was readily available in the car) he was trying to decide what to eat while at trader joe's and to his suggestion all i thought was i want that too. I am trying to keep my reasons for embracing the raw lifestyle in the front of my mind, but today I have felt like an alcoholic who just gave up the drink.
I apologize about the rant, but i was just hoping that this is normal and not a sign of weak resolve.

It is totally normal, not to worry.
When I go to the store there are a few rules of engagement (so to speak).
1. don't go in hungry.
2. don't go in hungry.
3. walk down the tin foil & toilet paper isle to get to the produce isle (not past the deli or down the bakery isles)
4. go with a list (if hubby wants sad let him go get it)
5. see rule # 1
I also carry raw granola bars, trail mix, clementines in my purse for emergencies...that has bailed me out a few times. Alissa has said she carried fudgeballs with her for the first couple of years, even to restaurants.
You can also breathe through your mouth if there is a particularly tempting smell aka food court.
I hope these help a little...(((hugs)))

curly... how old are you? how many years have you been eating SAD foods? For me... it was 51 years ... try retraining THAT!! this is a journey - take it one day at a time... sometimes even one MOMENT at a time!
remember that you are relearning - YEARS of habit and pattern... so - be gentle with yourself... be patient with yourself... and know that it's okay to hit a bump now and again.... this is a journey... we just keep right on going!
Many of the "raw gurus" that we have grown to love and respect -- also had years of up and down -- in and out... round and round...
trust the process curly... it does work. But remember that... IT IS A PROCESS.... honor yourself... love yourself... and give yourself the time you need to learn a new way of celebrating life... we're here with ya!
hang on for the ride... it's quite an adventure... but worth every moment of it!!

I wonder how you have been feeling for the first 5 days and what you are eating....fill us in and maybe we can point you to some new foods
finding the raw foods that make you feel the amazing life that they carry will absolutely help you stop craving sad food
for me for some reason red/orange/yellow bell peppers are like the most unbelievable treat when i eat them like an apple
when i started i would red bell peppers and raw cashews and just feel so decadent
i also would go to whole foods and but that really expensive delicious raw krauts like "zing" and sometimes eat the whole jar...they are in the fridge and there are typically lots of flavors and raw live culutred salsas
anyway don't sweat it, the more you transform the less you will want that food xoxo spiral leana

What wonderful advice. I am new to this as well. I have decided to get a dehydrator and make some goodies. On a journey, we used to eat chocolate bars and bags of potato crisps. (cheese and onion flavour) I love crisps, but we gave them up as they are cooked and so unhealthy. I hope to experiment with not cooking a raw version using nutritional yeast and raw onion. and whatever else. I don't know what. I'll have to experiment.

Hi Blix,
If you have a dehydrator and like crisps/chips...you're in luck!
Peel a sweet potato slice thin & add a dash of olive oil, pepper & some cinnamon & maple syrup and dehydrate. yum!
Take a zucchini peel slice in long slices (not so thin) and add olive oil, cayenne, garlic/onion powder, salt & oregano & dehydrate. yum!
Email me if you want a good corn chip recipe...too long to post!
But being prepared IS half the battle. ( :

Okay, now with this one, ya'll are gonna KNOW how sick and twisted I am;) , but here it goes.
I gave (and continue to give) myself permission to SMELL all the cooked food I want. And I RELISH the smell. Cause in my mind I know a couple of things:
1. It's not going to be satisfying enough if I eat it
2. I'm gonna feel like crap if I eat it and
3. I'm totally sabotaging all of my beautiful reasons for being raw if I eat it
That works well for me. Cause me still LOVE the smell of most cooked foods. And when I first went raw, I was the only one in a family of 5 doing it. So I used to ask dh if I could smell what he was having. SEVERAL times during the course of the meal if it was something that smelled particularly good! It became a joke in our house.
HTH!:D

All your responses really helped me get through a very rough day. Thank you! BTW, shine72, your suggestion of smelling as much as I want really was a godsend and worked and beppa66 I cant wait to make those sweet potato chips. They sound so yummy! :D
