i opened my young thai coconut this morning, as per usual,
and it had been all wrapped up in cling film,
but as it was sat on the counter it started LEAKING:
i checked &there was a crack in the bottom! that i DEFINITELY did not make!
it was also very pink inside,
the meat and water...
ive had a pink one before,
thats okay, right?
but i dunno about the crack-
im dubious about eating it but sad to throw it away :(

Aililiu,
This is too strange, I was making a smoothie this a.m. and the exact same thing happened to me! I tasted the water and it seemed okay. I would like to know what others think of this, especially the crack. Mine also was shrink wrapped and didn't leak until I started tapping the top with my knife. Very strange that we both had that experience on the same day, and so very far apart!

I opened a coconut one time and I tasted the juice and spit it right out. The juice had a decidedly vinegar taste to it. It did not have the usual mild pleasant coconut taste. From that taste on the test of a bad coconut for me has been the taste of the coconut juice.

Gosh.... I dunno - I've read posts where the meat was either slightly pink or purple... that's just odd to me... but then again - having my coconut in cling wrap is also very odd.... http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s43/FireStar_830/15huh-1.gif ...
I personally would probably not eat pink coconut meat... or purple.... (and it may be perfectly fine ...) I've just never seen it. Next time I'm at farmers market - I will ask the guy about that. The ones I get from him are always beautiful and white -- sometimes a bit 'translucent' -- but still very white.
I suppose if you taste it and it tastes okay -- maybe it's fine! I hate to waste my coconuts too... ;) :D ... I'll let you know what the Coconut Farmer says...
RAWK ON!

I've never seen a pink or purple meat / juice coconut. If I ever get one I will just toss it because I hate getting sick.

that is sooooo strange. lol. did you eat it?
i dont think the pink part is a problem, i just think it means its younger,
ive had pink ones before although never this pink.
im more worried about the crack....
you know,
if stuff can get out stuff can get in.
its sitting in my fridge waiting for me to make up my mind LOL!

aililiu,
I think the pink tint just indicates how immature the coconut is.
There was probably no meat or hardly any meat in it...right?
When I get mine from Whole foods I look for ones that are light weight in respect of how large the coconut is. That way there is more meat in them and they are guarenteed to be tasty.
But the crack on the bottom...doesn't sound good. I wouldn't eat it. I am real picky about my coconuts and I wont even buy them if they so even the slightest bit of mold on the bottom or anywhere!!

okay... I had a friend going to the farmers market today and had her ask the coconut farmer your coconut question...
if the meat is slightly pink (and he said VERY SLIGHTLY) then it should be okay to eat it....
if it is purple - he would not eat it
If it is cracked he would not eat it - impurities may have been able to get into the coconut - not good.
he also explained that the cling wrap is supposed to help prevent mold since (apparently) the coconuts you all are talking about are being imported from Thailand? Since they are being shipped so far - it must be wrapped to help deter the growth of mold. Ours here in hawaii are not wrapped in cling wrap b/c they are harvested off the tree and taken straight to market where they are purchased within a day.
Ah~haa.... okay - glad I asked!

starfire--- you are too sweet! thanks for thinking of me!
hmm... ive never had a PURPLE one but i have eaten ones that were PINK and felt okay... in fact i put one in my smoothie this morning
do you know the reason not to?
yeah i decided not to eat the cracked one...
those coconuts have been all over the place, lol!
i think they were just an off batch,
all the ones i bought that time have been pinkish.
shame,
the ones i bought the week before were MASSIVE with loads of water AND gorgeous, thicker flesh. MMMMMMMMM
better luck next time, eh?
anyways, thanks again.
that makes me all warm &fuzzy inside :)
