how long do you suppose organic medjool dates last in the refrigerator? I bought two pounds of them 3 to 4 months ago and forgot to use them... I hate to waste them... :(
actually that question goes for any dried fruit ...does anyone know how long dried fruits can keep???

I've kept dates for months.

sometimes they get a little dry, but if you are soaking them anyway, it's no big deal.

So, they are probably good.

If you taste one, and it tastes a little stale, then toss it, but mine stay just fine for months and months.

I buy a large box at Costco, and use it as I need them, I only use about 3 or 4 a week in a recipe now ad then.

VV, yep, I can understand, we all have our food issues.

Mine is wheat, boy if I eat even a little wheat, I'm bingin' for days.

So, I usually use barley as my grain of choice, even though most of my recipes call for wheat berries, I figure wheat berries are pretty easy to find, and most people can just substitute one grain for another.

I don't care for the taste of buckwheat, but I do like barley, and strange enough, I can eat spelt and kamut (which are anceint wheats), just not the "new" stuff. lol

I wonder how you would enjoy something made from amaranth flour. I'm sure you already know but for the sake of those who've never heard about it, it's one of the most ancient of grains, very popular in ancient egypt because it was so easily harvested and the rest of the plant was used in total. The stems were pulled apart and used because it was so fibrous and the leaves were cooked and eaten like spinach....

Which actually brings me to a question that you might be able to answer RP... (not many know about the ancient foods) I think I heard somewhere that the leaves are hard on the digestion unless cooked. Do you know anything about this???

And I want to thank you for mentioning that Costco sells boxes of dates. I had no idea! Guess I've got a Costco trip coming today!

Hi, I think they are called Price/Costco warehouse, you need a membership to buy there, the food is sold specifically for restaurant use, so they have all the stuff you would need in a restaurant, but now after a few years in business, first one was in Seattle, in 85? I think

they offer lots of family type stuff.

But everything there is massively cheaper.

PS, not familiar with amerinth leaves needing to be cooked, Dragggon grew some amerinth last year, and we just toss all garden leaves in our salads.

Thanks for the Price/Costco money saving tip. I'll think I'll try them instead of my usual market on my next grocery shopping trip. :)

I have lots of family in the Dallas area and they have Costco. I don't know what part you are in but the one we go to there is by the Tinity Mills Hospital right off the George W Bush freeway. It is between Carrolton and The Colony area. ( Sorry I can't be more specific I don't live there, just visit every 6 months) I think it opened about 2000-2001. It requires a membership but you can get a guest pass to go in and check it out. Since I have gone RAW I have not shopped at our Costco in CA much because they carry big bulk items and highly processed foods. Have you tried the Central Market it has great organic raw foods?

I buy my medjools from Orkos(www.orkos.com);they keep a year in the fridge! They just cristallize more, but that also makes them a little crunchy. You can even call orkos to ask in with state of cristallation(or how do you say this!?) they are. They sell over 20 sorts of dates!
I eat dates A LOT and buy them like 20 pounds a time. They are so good!
I once did an interview with Jamie from "The Date people" and he said that dates actually are humans first food and have all sorts of healthy nutrients in them. So,no guilt of eating a lot of them! :p

central market is THE BEST :D but can get pricey.....at least compared to costco, however those stores drag me down and annoy me when I go in, so I prefer central market.
