View Full Version : Sometimes you feel like a NUT-questions

I have a few nut-related questions...
1) Where can you find raw cashews in the UK- aren't most of the ones in supermarkets going to be steamed or denatured in some way even when not marked "roasted"? (And I'd prefer not to go into cashew debt...can't afford a 100 g pack for £5.)

2) Is there a particular reason why so many of the raw ice cream-style recipes use cashews instead of other nuts? Will other nuts work just as well?

3) I asked in Holland and Barrett (sp?) about raw macadamia nuts and was told that I could find them in the supermarket- I went to Morrisons, doubtful, and only found roasted macadamia nuts. In the veggie co-op where I volunteered, they made a delicious raw vegan cheesecake based on pine nuts and macadamia nuts- I loved it even when I was just vegetarian!

Thanks in advance!!

I think that these are probably the cheapest cashews that you will get.

Hi Ive used Keimling & their stuff is really good. I know what you mean about the 'nut debt' ;) & its even more frustrating when you find out the mega expensive supplies you just bought arent even raw:(
I guess the only way to be sure a nut is raw is to buy it in the shell, at least we will have loads of choice of nuts in shells in the Uk soon cos of xmas.
Ive been concentrating on seeds as much as possible in my recipes cos if they sprout you knoe for sure that they are raw:)

P.S most dried fruits arent raw either Im afraid:(
I got a dehydrator as soon as I realised this & dry alot of my own fruits now. Kiwi is an awesome dried snack;)
