Does anyone know if you can eat raw rice after it's been soaked a while? I'm mainly speaking of wild organic rice, not the white stuff.
Thanks for anyone's help!

I believe you can sprout wild rice ~ it is in Alissa's book and she has a recipe or two in there. I miss white rice a lot and have found that sprouted quinoa is a great substitute.

I tried sprouting wild rice several weeks ago, but only some sprouted and came out of the hull. Most were still hard though. I posted about it on here and someone said that they were probably old. I haven't tried it again. It would be wonderful to have rice! I can imagine the many dishes that can be made! :)

If it doesn't sprout does is it edible?

Good question. Most of mine didn't open up at all. They were super hard. I didn't even try to eat them. I'd think they would be rather tasteless.

Thanks. I know wheat berries get soft and wasn't sure about rice. I can always try and find out...who knows, some may even sprout!
Thanks!

Let us know! I saw a cooked food recipe that was a tomato stuffed with a mixture of rice, corn, something green..not sure what, and a type of salad dressing. This is doable in raw, if only I could sprout some rice!

how cali mentions this rice - tomato - etc dish i too want a rice sub but cant find , and the wild rice is too costy even if it did work . so i got to the thought of trying to soak wheat berries in water which includes things like tomato - onion - garlic - pepper - spices - etc in hope to impart those flavors into the wheat while soaking over say an 18 hour period . though ide imagine so that it doesnt go bad youd have to soak it the first say 8 hours (i dont know im just a stupid guy / non cook) in only water . this might work good for say mexican and italian type ' soaked grain / wheat ' dishes .
i guess it aint rice but its something similar in dish type .

i got another idea for rice .
first list the mineral make up of rice .
then take maybe a potato or some cauliflower stem etc etc
and shred them up into rice form . then add to what ever
vegi youve shredded the soaking juice / water of another vegi/vegis
that combine with the shredded vegi to form the same mineral
content of the rice and maybe itll taste near rice . its like
making it a chemistry project instead of going by taste .
if that makes sense to anyone . just thought ide throw the
idea around because if someone comes up with a legit raw
rice it'll make staying raw EASY .
theres gotta be something to soak potatoes in thatll
make a great food . we just have to discover it .
itll be cheap / easy / filling .

you can make really good tasting rice with jicama. thereīs a really good recipe in pure food and wineīs book in with the sushi..it works really well if you have a dehydrator. itīs really yummy and has a good consistency. i have another recipe at home (iīm travelling at the moment) from DUMBO (mathew kennys newer place) so if you canīt find a jicama recipe feel free to mail me mleite@blue.com.pt
hope this is helpful.

I tried sprouting wild rice and it was hard and only a few sprouted. I asked my friends at a meetup and they told me "If it doesn't sprout, it's not alive"
They also mentioned, it could of been exposed to too much sun, long shelf life or it was somehow heated. So I don't take any chances, I don't use rice at all.

Process some parsnips or carrots and cauliflower until fine, put in a low casserole dish add some of your favorite savory spices, sliced mushrooms, a bit of oil, nama shoyu, stick in the dehydrator to warm and meld flavors. Presto, rice pilaf. Yummy.

you can get germinated brown rice at serenityspaces.org . You soak it for 24 hours and eat. dorit made it on Saturday for our class. I didn't eat it, but my dh did and he said it's even better than cooked brown rice!

okay. found a better source for the same EXACT brand- www.dhccare.com
The shipping at serenity spaces was as much as my order, no matter how much I ordered. So I searched for a different source and found the EXACT brand at the above address with only SEVEN dollar shipping and free shipping for orders over $75.
Oh and my dc LOOOOOVED it too. They asked me to make it everyday!

With this germinated rice - How do you prepare it? does it get soft enough just by soaking? What the difference between this product and germinating rice from the health food store?

my understanding (without trying it) is that the rice in the store can't sprout, that it was treated with heat to remove the hulls? someone correct me here?
The germinated brown rice is germinated, then dehydrated at a low temp and vacuum packed. Then you soak it for 24 hours. Dorit claims that even 20 minutes less changes the consistency. I haven't tried it since I have been on a fast, but my SAD dh and aspiring raw children all claimed that it is BETTER than cooked brown rice (our favorite grain of all time). Dorit mentioned that she has a hard time convincing raw fooders that it is NOT a cooked food, due to the flavor and consistency.
My fast is over in a week and it will take me about another week to eat grains, so I will let you know what it is like somewhere around the 16th. :D
