My husband is a manager at a bank that deals with mostly businesses.
He had this one customer/business owner who had a little deli. He was from Korea. Nice as can be great guy. So great that he would purposly over order Korean Pears. And bring them to my husband branch. He'd bring about 15 of these suckers up there. Since there is only 3 and 4 people working at that branch, my husband would bring about 6 of these home for me. They are over a pound of sweet pear each. They used to feed me all day.

They are by far still my favorite fruit.

This guy closed his business and moved back home. No more Korean "Shin-go" Pears. I miss them. I've been to a lot of asian stores looking for them. They are only available online for order. And they are $4 each. :(

I went to kroger the other day and decided to go ahead and try it's mini version. The asian pear. Not the same. Not as good. Too tough and too seedy. :(
I miss my pears.

I just thought I'd share so if anyone has access to the Korean Pear they can try it's yummyness too.

here is a link to them. they look just like the asian pears but can be about 4 times the size.

I just wanted to suggest that you try asian pears from a better produce source. I've had them from QFC (the same as Kroger) and Safeway and Fred Meyer and they're always tough and seedy and sour, like you say. But at a co-op or Whole Foods, I can get them and they're sweet and crisp and light. Maybe not quite as good as your Korean pears, but at least a comparable fruit!

I've seen them but been to chicken to try them. Thanks to you I will.
Do you peel the skin off or eat it?

Fjernsyn- I'll try the ones at WFS. :)

Beppa-I honestly don't remember what I did with the Korean pears. it was almost 2 years ago. But with the asian pears i ended up cutting the skin of b/c it was tough and not very tastey. I would assume the same with the big ones.
But I'm thinking I may have eaten it......

Hmmm... I didn't know there were two varieties. I never buy the Asian pears from the store, because they often have an aroma of mold about them (probably from being stored in less-than-dry conditions). However, a few years ago, one of my father's friends invited us to raid his tree. Yes, he had an Asian pear tree in his yard! The fruit was beautiful, large, and juicy. We ate so many of those things...

I don't know what happened to the tree. It may have gotten removed. But it seems obvious that they can be grown in North America. Why not try growing your own?

I always eat them with the skin on. And I've found that the best ones feel like a really old apple that you wouldn't want to buy. They give a bit when you squeeze them.

wow I never realized they could get that big.

I found a local pear in MI that was tart sweet and very crisp it reminded me of the Asian pears

I have lived in Alaska since 1959 and about the only thing I miss are the fruit trees. Nothing but some crab apples will grow here. I was originally from SE Michigan and there were lots of fruit trees.

I will someday. Hubby and I moved into his mom's condo with her so we can finish our last year of school and save some money for a down payment on a house. :)

Oh how funny, I bought 4 at farmers market on Saturday and brought one to work with me today; I had to stop myself from moaning in ecstasy as I ate it, it was so good!

I wonder how the pears at the Asian market are ? I think I'll try them and find out especially after reading the first part of the description from the link. Here's the quote that tickled my taste buds:

"Biting into "Shin-Go" Korean Pear is truly like biting into a waterfall. Exploding with chin drenching sweetness is the hallmark of these delicious fruits."

Just remember, the shin-go is waaaaay different from asian pears. much different taste and texture
