View Full Version : Ok, I bought raw agave. Um...now what?

I was at Wild Oats Market and I decided to spend $4.79 on a plastic jar (for lack of a better term) of raw agave. They also had raw cereal and raw flax crisps, but the prices scared me away. $11 and $9, respectively. Wild Oats must think we're millionaires.
Moving along, now I have raw agave sitting in my bedroom.
Right now, it's decor. What else can I do with it? This morning, I ate a (cooked) vegan cinnamon bun and I spread a little raw agave on the top. It was good.
Does anyone have any ideas? Does anyone know of any recipies that call for raw agave but don't require a dehydrator (I have a mini chopper and a blender)?
Any advice is appreciated. Thanks. :)

A little agave goes into all of my smoothies! Whether they are green, cacao, tropical...it doesn't matter. Also, a favorite treat is chocolate sauce to put on bananas, raw ice cream or whatever you want.
Chocolate sauce:
4 T. cacao powder
3 T. agave
1/2 tsp. coconut oil
AND a little vanilla if you want!

Cool, thanks! I don't eat coconut oil, so could I substitute canola oil for the coconut oil? I'd have to find raw oil though. Hmmm...

You could even leave out the coconut oil. I used to grind the cacao nibs in a coffee grinder and then mix them up with agave and dip bananas or strawberries in them (this was YEARS ago before there was cacao powder). I did not use the coconut oil at that time and it was still yummy. Agave tastes like thick sugar water to me. I use it like I would sugar in anything that needs to be sweetened. Good luck!
Agave is a sugar-type substitute. It's sweet and can be used in any recipe that you want to sweeten up. Smoothies, desserts, sauces etc...

Fudge / chocolate balls / pie crust. You throw nuts into your blender/food processor, add cacao, and enough agave to make it sweet and stick together. Then freeze. Yum! :)

Use it for anything you wish you could use refined sugar for. The agave is lower glycemic and therefore a better alternative.

okay THIS is one of my favorite recipes.
you need:
2 c. raspberries - or strawberries - or an orange, peeled and sliced
drizzle agave on top - to taste
and eat with spoon or fork.

One of my kids MOST favorite raw treats and something that makes them eat bananas by the pound, LOL, is put about 1/4 cup of raspberries in the blender with maybe 1 T. of agave. I also use honey and they like both. They dip their bananas into the raspberries and happily eat away. You could probably do the same with strawberries or any berries even if they're tart.

I go through soo much agave! I use it in flaxcakes...ohhh yummmo..there are a few different versions of this recipe around - ani phyo has a basic one in her book. Basically mix ground flax seeds (approx 2-3 cups) with agave and coconut butter (thats in ani's recipe and I think it makes it hold together so much better than without). I also throw in some flavoring (bananas a good one), or dried cherries (divine!) or sometimes I mix some spices into my coconut oil before blending it with everything else (my latest is cinnamon/cardamon and a bit of almond flavoring) soooo good...

For breakfast sometimes I eat a sliced banana, or two, with nuts, a little coconut, and agave drizzeled on. Yummy!

I think that agave is something that you need to have on standby in case there is a dish that needs to be sweetened up but it is not an optimal food so you should not be activly looking for a way to eat it.
It will keep for ages. I have had the same jar for a year or so now and there is still 75% of it left.

Just a note that it's difficult to find TRULY raw agave. Most companies that sell raw agave mislabel it, as it's often heated to 160 F.
