How many of you eat chia? Surely you don't eat it plain? I just received a bag as a promotional item, and I admit to being a bit squeamish after reading the directions. Mix, wisk, mix, wisk and leave in fridge until it forms a [gulp] gel. Then consume 3 TB of gel three times per day.

Oh my.

I do eat them plain. I like them. I might be the only one. My daughter thought they were disgusting and wouldn't even drink them in a smoothie. My mom was less than thrilled with them. I think they taste light and refreshing. I eat about three ounces of them all gelled up like that. If I forget to gel them, I will just eat them a pinch at a time. It's weird to eat them like that. They gel up in your mouth and sometimes one will get stuck between your teeth, just rolling around and gelling in there. Heh!

They are taught in desert survival class. Just pick the "flower" and eat raw. Supposed to be high in protein as I recall.

I use them in the "famous" onion bread recipe in lieu of flax seeds. Comes out just fine.

Chia pudding! Blended up with water in a high-speed blender they really do turn into a pudding consistency. I tweaked a recipe I found a while ago .. this is supposed to be 1 serving, but I find it makes 2, and is really good over some chopped bananas.

Just under 1 cup water
2-3 tbsp chia seeds (depending how thick you want it)
1 heaping tbsp nut butter (we use tahini)
1 tsp sweetener (we use raw honey)
1 heaping tbsp raw cacao powder

I first tried this with 2 tbsp chia to 1 cup water and it was a little runny for my taste. With almost 3 tbsp chia to just under 1 cup water you get a really thick texture, sorta like Greek yogurt. Which, if you ask me, is a VERY good thing.

I've been throwing in some "superfoods" because I'm trying to do this raw-and-pregnant thing and I'm serious about my omega-3s and 6s, as well as iron and calcium. Chias themselves are supposed to be the highest omega-3 source by weight that there is. Or so I've read. :) So I've been tossing in some hemp seeds, sprouted black sesame seeds, a few gojis, and a couple of dried figs.

We tried this first with carob and it was grainy. The cacao is great though. You can add more sweetener, of course .. I don't like things too sweet, so 1 tsp is plenty. Just ate some for breakfast! You don't need much. It's filling, but not too rich. I likes it.

My seeds are brown/black like the original Chia Pet! All I can picture is that clay dog/cat/goat (whatever that thing was) covered with green fur.

Is there anything wrong with dark chia seeds? I bought mine from GoldMine, a reputable raw source.

I LOVE Chia seeds. I either toss them on my salads and fruit or I soak them until they are a gel and include them in my smoothies, applesauce, salad dressing, etc. I eat them several times a day.

I buy organic Chia seeds.

Nope not at all. There is not much difference between the light and dark ones.

Mine are the dark ones. The white ones generally cost a lot more and we couldn't find any difference nutritionally speaking. I think the white ones might offer more eye appeal in a smoothie though.

When they are soaked in water and turn into a gel, they are almost translucent. You can't tell that they were once brown.
