I LOVE pink grapefruit--at least as much as chocolate, if you can believe it! It's a little early in the season for them, so I was very excited when I saw pomelos in the store yesterday. I thought, "Yay! Something to tide me over until grapefruit season!" and bought one for the first time.
Well, I cut it open before and YUCK! Though it was almost the size of a small cantaloupe, it was mostly rind on the inside, and the pulp was dry practically to the point of being mealy. Blech. I'm glad I only bought one.
Is this normal for pomelos? If not, is there a way to find a good one next time?
PS: Grapefruit--the only good thing about winter!!!!!!!

We've purchased Pomelos before and they were mostly rind. The fruit was in great condition, however. Very similar to grapefruit. We quit purchasing them because it seemed we were paying more for rind than fruit.

In our family we have what we call 'The weird fruit of the month club'. What we do is everytime we see some strange fruit or something we've never tried before, we buy it. We tried a dragon fruit last week.
Anyhow, we tried a pomelo a while back and all agreed that grapefruit was better and that it was mostly rind.

Pummelo (always spelled it this way, not sure if it is correct) is my *favorite* fruit. I just LOVE them. Yes, it is a lot of rind, but it tastes sweeter than a grapefruit to me, and I love the texture. I just can't get enough of them.

It's spelled both ways. I liked it, too; loved the sweetness but they were expensive here. If I could find them cheap I might start buying them again. But, until that happens I'll help myself to plenty of grapefruit! :D

I love the fragrance of the pomelo.

The pommelo is one of my fav fruits but very expensive. If there is a raw way to candy peel then you can use the peel too. Otherwise find some hard-and-fast cooked food eaters amongst your friends and relations and make them traditional candied peel - at least you'll know it's a nice additive free present for them -- even if it is cooked

Ive never bought one because it looks like more skin than anything.. like those oranges that have 1 inch thick skin and then the orange is the size of a tennis ball lol.. ha ha.. easy to peel but oye.. how's that filling  :D
