I have Alissa's book & DVDs and many recipes call for Braggs liquid aminos or Nama shoyu. Does anyone have a substitute- I am allergic to soy and I don't trust the Braggs with MSG.

Hi i also dont eat soya products or anything with msg in. I have made many of Alissa's recipes & just leave out the Braggs or Nama. If I have found the taste bland I have added in my favorite fresh herbs or spices. HTH

If it calls for either of those, I just use salt (pink himalayan). If something calls for miso, I sub onion powder, some allspice and a little tumeric, seems to work perfectly :). Hope that helps!

I can think of a few excellent options.

1) raw sea salt plus dehydrated mushroom powder. The mushroom powder will give you that "beefy" taste that those ingredients provide.

2) a NON-soy MISO paste. Miso can be made from brown rice, barley, etc. You would have to be careful of your source for this if your soy allergy is so extreme that you can't have products made in a facility that makes soy, as some of the companies that make the non-soy miso also make soy miso.

3) salsify is a root plant that tastes sort of beefy and oysterish.

4) if you need something quick or are in lazy mode, just use a good flavorful sea salt. You might miss some of the "dark" beefy flavor.

sundried tomatoes will provide a different flavor, but they are also excellent for adding that kind of taste.
