View Full Version : I survived Jamba Juice :-)

Okay, I slipped up a little today. I had a smoothie at jamba juice with some friends. I wasn't even hungry or requiring nourishment, but oh well, caved into social pressure and a crumpled up coupon. Luckily I had an apple, an orange, and some peppermint in the morning and was feeling really great before I took the deathly plunge in that store.

How it started is one of my friends, while we were out walking, said "ooh ooh ooh, there's Jamba Juice, let's go!". I've had this free smoothie coupon in my wallet for 2 years and I thought what could a little smoothie hurt? I scoured the list and all I could see was dairy paste this and non-fat yogurt base that and so I ordered the peanut butter chocolate something or other which seemed the safest bet. Or I was just having a chocolate craving don't know! ha. Anyway, my coupon was good for the original size which is huge! I took a couple of sips, it was sweet, and I thought okay only a few more than I'm throwing this away. It's free afterall. They charge $4.65 for this stuff, full of sugar and dairy products. After about 3 minutes, the sugar rush took hold of me and I literally started shaking. One of my friends looked at me and asked if I was okay, it was that obvious. My body reacted violently, my head started pounding, my lower back and my left kidney started throbbing. I'm not kidding! I stopped drinking it and sat down in the sun and tried to relax. Oh my God, I was as high as a kite and I felt really crappy. Really felt like @#@#. Then I had a few sips of water and about 20 minutes later, my blood sugar levels recovered. I have not suffered from hypoglycemia, diabetes or anything like that. Now I really can see how this type of diet can cause both. Never, ever, ever, ever again will I drink a Jamba Juice Smoothie! Ever. Before I went raw I had one maybe 4-5 times a year and in hindsight I just can't believe it. I didn't have these kinds of reactions before I went Raw. Truly incredible huh?

I believe my raw diet helped me bounce back from that experience as quickly as I did. After about 30 minutes, I regained my energy levels and went home and had some sunflower seeds for a little protein just to be on the safe side. The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don't know. It is a beautiful, sunny day in the 70's and dozens of people came into that store while we were in there, including kids, to get their sugar fix which is really all that stuff is. I know they meant well when they started Jamba, but they really need to step up to the plate now and create a Rawmba Juice or something. Bad joke, but you know what I mean. :D

Do you have a similar experience of having a profound negative reaction to something you used to eat or drink with no problem before going Raw?

Of all things, cooked veggies give me an instant headache. You'd think that would be the most innocuous SAD thing slip up with, but not for me!

i get jamba juice...or maybe it's juice it up...but yep it's hard being out with friends for sure. but, at least you know.

i just get orange carrot juice and some wheatgrass at those smoothie places, i haven't seen one without a juicer yet.

i've also ordered a smoothie with just water...they don't even blink when you ask.

Your Jamba Juice doesn't carry all-fruit smoothies? Mine has at least 4 that are all fruit. They're made with pasteurized juice, but I just ask for no pasteurized juice and sub with orange juice(fresh).
I can't even stomach pasteurized juices anymore! I lovelovelove Odwalla and Naked brand smoothies/juices but they give me a stomach ache :(
Same with the smell of alcohol, I used to drink a lot when I was in high school.
I've had such a clean diet lately that anything I used to eat will make me sick

Oh I'm not knocking Jamba, I used to work for Jamba in their corporate headquarters which is in the Bay Area. They're doing their best and you are correct they have fruit smoothies and offer wheatgrass shots. I'm just saying a lot of their products (I know because they talk about it and I'm not supposed to  ) have wayyyyyyy too much sugar and are not as healthy as you think they are. It was my own fault selecting that particular product. But keep in mind they're also NOT using organic fruit and I won't even tell you where they get it from. For example, there bananas are shipped from way the hell across the world and they're not fresh by our standards. I will only do the wheatgrass shots if I ever go in there again, which I probably won't.

I was just curious if anyone else had a reaction to something they didn't think twice about before going Raw, not necessarily saying anything negative about Jamba. It's just where I had my particular revelation of just how far I've come, especially completely detoxing from sugar and consuming sugar, high fruit corn syrup laden products.

Thanks for your comments, it's helpful reading about other's experiences. This journey is not always an easy one. Peace.

hmmm thanks for the information Crystalzgoneraw! I will definitely keep this in mind. At one point, i realized you can trust only YOURSELF with best food choices (growing your own and such). But i am glad that there's at least something i can get downtown Chicago that's not exactly bad for me :)

Riiiya, I do understand and totally agree with trusting yourself.

I'm saving up for a vitamix and I'm looking forward to creating some spectacular smoothies in my own kitchen. woo-hoo. :D But until then, I'm still experimenting with the juice bars in my town.

I have never had Jamba Juice and have never been tempted. Daughter used to beg for it, but I wouldn't let her have it. I knew I could make smoothies for her at home that were cheaper and better for her. I've never liked smoothies, I don't care what is in them! If I were in such a situation, I would just get a bottle of water, if they had it. If not then I'd get nothing.

Hi yes im having lots of major nasty & quick bad reactions to non raw foods when I try them out after a couple of days 100% raw. The process is actually helping me to let go of foods I thought i 'loved' but now cant physically tolerate. I have also found myself repulsed by foods I used to crave. Maybe Im just feeling & hearing what my body has always been trying to tell me!

I don't think we have Jamba Juice around here. But we have Jugo Juice and Booster Juice. The former uses cooked, sugar-sweetened juices and the latter puts yogurt in almost everything. I walked into a Booster Juice recently and walked back out again. How can they claim that's healthy?

The best smoothie I've had recently was from the smoothie bar at a grocery store! It was frozen blueberries, raspberries, and strawberries (it said "organic if available") and apple juice. Not 100% raw, but it was so thick that I don't think there was much of the juice in it. It was sweet, filling, and weighed about a pound! If the apple juice had been fresh, that would have been perfect.

But if you can make a smoothie that good with just fruit and fruit juice, why do these smoothie companies feel the need to add yogurt, whey powders, sugars, sorbets, etc.?

I use to love jamba Juice, but it does have way to many sugars for anyone. I wish we had more places that were actually serving heathly smoothies made from organic products without the added sugar and dairy products.

as Jamba Juice? I usually love Robeks smoothies, I get 'em without the boosts and yogurt,BUT I've been getting 'em with the sorbet(UH-OH-is the sorbet RAW?).I can also get them with just the fruit only. I know the supervisor, she's really cool and the staff will accomodate me. I normally stick to the berry smoothies since they have the least amout of sugar and calories- I usually get the 24 oz. size but sometimes I will get the kids size(12 oz.) I LOVE ROBEKS!! I did try a Jamba Juice smoothie once, I think in 2005 or 2006, but I don't remember what was in it. I do know there was no dairy in it, however. Sciencegal:D

Probably not. Even if the juice that's used is raw, the sugar in it probably isn't. And sorbet usually has sugar.
