Okay--I'm wanting to make a few recipes that call for seaweed, but I have never tried it and I'm having a hard time thinking about putting seaweed in my mouth!
Can somebody fill me in on how it tastes? Is it salty? Does it taste fishy? (it looks like fish skin to me) Is it mild or strong? Is it wet or dry? I know that some people eat it plain
I don't even know how its packaged or where to look for it in stores. Is there a difference in brands?
Help please! I'm seaweed stupid!:o

Ha ha meancat....I don't think you're seaweed stupid! Just overwhelmed! Ok, well, there's nori sheets, which you use to wrap veggie "sushi"...make sure to get untoasted (looks black), and you don't soak that. There's wakame, which I tried soaked, and couldn't stomach it.....if I use it again, I'll just crumble it dry....it was just too slimy for me. I love Arame, which are like small, thin strips, almost flat noodle-like, but very small and thin. I soak this, and use it in a seaweed salad with carrots, cuke, tahini, etc. There are probably more, but these are the ones I use. You'll find them in plastic bags/packages....as for difference in brands, I'm not too sure, just make sure you get untoasted, and organic (not sure about if raw/organic is specified on package though, it's not on the kind I have - which is KOYO brand). HTH! Oh, and I get it at my local heath food store...just ask, they'll point you in the right direction. I don't find it fishy, either, kinda "earthy"....

ohhhhmigoodness. seaweed is one of my STAPLES. i eat it EVERYday, i love love love it. of course i also loved seafood before i went vegan, i dont know if theres a link there. and i grew up with the ocean in my mouth and up my nose, LOL. it gives me a good salt fix. good on salads, BRILLIANT with avos. my favourite is bull kelp, macro kelp is good too (i get those local) nori is BRILLIANT for wraps, and i get dulse sometimes too. arames fun for noodles and has a VERY mild taste, if you want to start out...... but its not really salty, and thats what i love about seaweeds. definitely try some! mmm! and your body will love you for it.

I think that nori is the best seaweed to buy if you have never bought seaweed before. Sometimes I just eat it straight and the crunchyness and saltyness reminds me of eating chips.

It isn't fishy ... that is to say fish and seaweed grow in the sea they both taste of the sea. Yes it is salty but it's really nice ... try some and see how you like it.

Okay--I'm gonna give it a whirl. I guess if its a little salty, that will help my salt wants. I've always been a seafood eater but when it comes to the sea plants, I've always had a mental block. But its time to incorporate some new foods into my diet and I told myself that I would try new foods so heres my chance.
Thanks for all the input--much appreciated!!

Based on my limited experience with seaweed I find that is more then a little salty its VERY salty.
--------------- Edit
I didn't have it washed off enough so there was sea salt residue on it. The seaweed minus the salt water residue isn't all that salty. :)

I got a small amount of seaweed to experiment with. I'm trying to figure out how to eat it, do I juice it, blend it, dehydrate it, or just get a fork and dig in ? Suggestions appreciated.
I usually just soak it in a small amount of water, then mix it in with a salad. I actually had some tonight that I just ate a bit of (after it had been soaked). Then I drank the soak water, which was pretty good. My family thought I was a little crazy for drinking it, though!

I'd so highly recommend Alissa's Prince Caspian recipe with soaked seaweed and the sesame ginger dressing. It is so good!

Hey EZ Rider --
Let me know how you ate it and your take on the flavor Okay?
Why do I have such a mental block towards it? I love greens--what's the deal? (It looks like fish skin to me--thats why)
EZ --tell something that it tastes like if you can--so I can relate.
THANX
