Walnuts, pecans, hazelnuts, almonds, pine nuts, brazil nuts, macadamia nuts, cashews (that's in debate), etc...
Plus there are seeds, sesame, sunflower, pumkin, etc...

Im starting to think the same thing...I read recently than any pre-shelled nuts we buy have been heated to high temperatures to remove the shells!
Im now on the search for a supply of nuts in their shells. In the UK there are plenty at Christmas time but Ive never seen them the rest of the year.

we may never know 100% sure. Unless someone jumps on here that has a family member that works is such a field. As in literally works in the factory that deals with it. :(

i just bought fresh hazelnuts at the market :D
THOSE are raw.
and taste SOOO different from store bought hazelnuts, WAY better.
and dont give me the addictive cant-stop-eating-nuts feeling,
which is what lead me to believe the store ones are NOT RAW.
its the only thing that still makes me feel addicted.

I buy wallnuts in their shell and always assumed that they were raw.
A few weeks ago one of the stalls at the farmers marked had different wallnuts. He said that they were Fresh whereas the other type were refered to as Frish.
I do not know what he meant but I took some. They were more difficult to open and the nut itself was far more moist. I put the remainder in the fridge and within 2 weeks that had started to go mouldy.
It is possible that the ones that I usually get are just dried and are still raw.

I figure if they sprout then they are truly raw. I mean that is what they are SUPPOSED to do, isn't it???
I can't sprout my almonds or my cashews that are supposedly raw. Thinking of giving them up, or atleast minimizing them.

DAMN! I put my seasame seeds, sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds in to sprout and none of them did.. all were labeled as raw.. BLASTED. I've also never been able to sprout my almonds or walnuts. DAMN DAMN DAMN. I LOVE NUTS! What's a girl to do now?

if you have trader joes they have quite a few raw nuts... but yeah sometimes they seem hard to find. I've yet to see real raw cashews in the U.S. I'm pretty sure a lot of the labeled raw almonds are actually pasteurized.

i buy my nuts at a farmer's market now and they're always amazingly fresh (none of them float when i soak them)! but i always forget to ask whether they steam them.....this tuesday i will finally ask- im suspecting none of these nuts are truly raw.... but i don't think i'll stop buying them (many just buy less)

Hi, there's a great article on nuts and how they're prepared.. I'm looking for it, but here are my notes I took. On a side note, in Gabriel Cousens' raw summit interview, he said something about imported young coconuts being irradiated, and I didn't catch whether he said they all are, or it's just common. I've had good luck sprouting pumpkin seeds and most other seeds from the health food store here, but not from the organic section at the regular store.
I got some truly raw cashews from sunfoods.com, they were expensive and they taste really different, but good! They make me feel reeeaaally tired when I eat them though. I also tried some "sprouted" cashews from oneluckyduck, and I really don't think they're raw, they just say "sprouted" means that they soaked and then dehydrated them, it doesn't mean they were alive! I'm starting to think that if we couldn't eat something when we encounter it in nature, it probably isn't natural for us to eat. Like we could never walk up to a pecan tree and eat a pecan. Just a thought.. here's my notes ;)
summary of article on nuts:
almonds are raw and will sprout. don't sprout over 2 days, one day recommended, or they will turn rancid.
brazil nuts are boiled for five minutes to remove the shell, so are not truly raw and are not viable. nuts in shell are still raw but hard to shell
cashews: interesting that they are related to mango, pistachio, and poison oak/ivy/sumac! shells are toxic and nuts are heated to remove toxin and shell, for about 90 seconds. raw cashews are not truly raw.
chestnuts: chinese and european chestnuts are air dried and are raw, american chestnuts may be quickly boiled to kill parasites and are not raw.
coconuts: only the young green (usually sold as young thai) coconuts are viable and will sprout
filberts/hazelnuts: raw nuts are viable but not sproutable, only buy organic, non-organic are cured in sulfur dioxide
macadamia nuts: may be soaked in brine then oven dried, best to buy in shell (or from sunfood)
peanuts: actually a legume, raw peanuts will sprout. be extra careful of mold, very toxic.
pecans: FDA requires that shells be heated to near boiling before commercial shelling, so they are devitalized. raw nuts in shell are usually vital.
raw pistachios are dried at 150 - 160 degrees f. and probably are not viable (they have cool-dried pistachios at sunfood.com)
pine nuts: probably viable, mechanically processed, but will not sprout.
walnuts: in-shell walnuts are heat treated or fumigated to prevent insects, often bleached. shelled walnuts are not, but may be treated with an antioxidant. only buy organic. soaking may ruin taste.
best raw nuts:
almonds, peanuts, filberts/hazelnuts, coconuts
also okay
pine nuts, non-american chestnuts, macadamias, pine nuts,
definitely not raw
cashews, pecans

Interseting that most nuts are not truely raw. This is the one reason my nut consumption has gone down dramatically. Unless I get them online at sunfood or the almond grower in CA it is IMPOSSIBLE to find raw nuts here. They saw Raw on the bins but I know they aren't based on the price and taste.

http://rawfromthefarm.com/default.aspx Here's where I've been ordering from. I think they are better than health food store variety.

Same here. The ones at the grocery store were labeled raw/organic, but they didn't sprout for me.
Those buggers

I just got some raw Pistachios from Whole Foods and they are sprouting. I think my Almonds are beginning to sprout. I can't get my Pecans to sprout which I bought online from a farm that says they are raw and sun dried.

for people in the UK, an online store called Keimling sells truly raw nuts! (cashews in skins, almonds, macs...)

I just checked that out and it looks very promising. Do not know why I was not aware of it before now. Thanks for the heads up.

hi sport, i discovered it a while back just by googling for raw nuts and that was the only viable source that came up. you probably haven't heard of them as they're based in Germany but deliver to UK with only £6 max. postage. I reckon their cashews work out cheaper than those imported from the US sold on sites like TRF/Shazzies/Fresh... I'm going to buy my nuts from there in future as i've come to the conclusion that all the "raw" nuts sold over here have been heat dried/irradiated/pasturised since they just won't sprout.
