We have a lot of fruit out on the counter and the fridge is full. We've been having a lot of fruit flys around our lemons and oranges and especially the pineapples. Does anyone else have this problem (we live in NE, not sure if region matters)? If you do how do you handle it? I'd rather not live with them...

Do you have bananas too? I've found that when I rinse my bananas and towel dry them I have fewer fruit flies...rinsing all my produce sooner than later (even the ones I don't eat the skins of) seems to keep the flies to a minimum.
If I do get some, I fill a shot glass with white vinegar, cover with clear wrap and poke a few small holes in the top. They fly in and get trapped. Once I had a ton of fruit flies and my partner used the vacuum cleaner to suck them up, it was quite efficient.

I use the glass and vinegar too. Works okay, but I would rather not have that sitting on my counter--right now I'm just living with 'em. the vacuum idea sounds intriging though!
Glad to have someone else from my neck of the woods on the site!! Where abouts in NE? I lived in Omaha most of my life--moved across the river to CB a couple years ago. Still a cornhead fan though!! :D
Do you find people in cow country here looking at you like you're an alien when you try to explain your eating raw? Call me an alien, I guess.

Yes! We went raw for lent a couple of years back and our friends just rolled their eyes. lol They think we're odd but they love us anyway. As far as meat goes I've been surprised at how many vegetarians we've run across. We shop a lot at our local co-op and they have the best veg/vegan deli anywhere around.
We're in the Lincoln area.

Interesting. I haven't noticed many fruit flies if fruit is left on the counter. But I do remember lots of fruit flies when I lived in Ontario as a child (I'm in British Columbia now). So there could be a location connection. Maybe fruit flies don't like the coastal regions!
I'm not sure how to deal with them, either. I think we just used to let them go at it! :p
