I'm not looking for pricing or anything, but am interested in what people buy on their grocery days. We wind up with a bunch of fruit and little else (very little vegetables), but I guess that's because we don't know what to do w/a lot of veggies. So...

What does your grocery list look like?
How often do you shop for fresh food? Once a week, twice, three times?

Just wanting to get an idea. Thanks!

Hi my weekly staples are-
Avocadoes - many uses but I mostly make guacamole
Lettuces - love to use romaine leaves for wraps
Celery - great in veg juices or as sticks to scoop up raw pates or dips
Cucumber - juices, salads, spiralised pasta
Onions - add to dips, pestos, pates
Courgettes - spiralised pasta, thinly sliced used as wraps
Carrots - spiralised, chopped into pates, dips, as yummy cake & juice

I shop 2 to 3 times per week. I buy just for myself and get small amounts. Sunday I was at an outdoor menonite market (in Tennessee) and bought a big bag of tomatoes (about 12), a watermelon, 4 red bell peppers, 6 zuchini. Yesterday at local organic market I bought 5 apples, 1 bunch of romaine, bunch of celery, 1 grapefruit, small bag of walnuts. I'm sure Saturday I'll be back at the store for more fruits & veggies. Basically, I just buy what I feel like eating for the next 2 or 3 days.

List continued
Apples - juices & snacking
bananas - snacking, smoothies,raw desserts
Mango - raw desserts, smoothies
red berries (raspberries are my fave) - breakfasts, desserts, toppings for desserts, raw 'jams'
Flax seeds - dehydrator crackers
Hazelnuts (filberts?) - an alkalining nut that I substitute for alot of other nuts in raw recipes
Sesame seeds - topping salads, making raw tahini

Still more LOL
Sunflower seeds - really economical & great for pates that are my weekly staple. I also use them as nut replacements when Im short of cash
Pumpkin seeds - pates, add to salads, great snack to carry with you
Dates - I use dates to make a sweet paste (mix with soak water), this is so much cheaper than raw agave nectar.

I also keep a supply of raisins, gojis, flaked coconut, figs etc in for adding to dessert recipes.
Gojis are great soaked in fruit juice.
I shop a main shop weekly but sometimes replenish midweek.
I do a large dried goods shop (seeds for sprouting etc) about every 2 or 3 months.

i've been a fruitarian the past couple of weeks:

lots of organic apples, bananas, oranges, lemons, grapefruit, red grapes

lately i cannot get enough of oranges and fresh squeezed orange juice - yum my body must need alkalanizing

generally i buy kale, romaine lettuce, wheatgrass to juice, bell peppers (orange, red, yellow & green), vegetables in season, avocados (a staple for me), sunflower seeds, cashews, almonds, brazil nuts, trail mixes, dates, lots of fruit (listed above and whatever is in season), raw flax seed crackers occassionally

i shop 2-4 times per week

For me, it really depends on if I'm making any recipes during the week, but I have a list of things I buy almost religiously! I shop once a week, and this lasts me from trip to trip....oh, and assume it's all organic produce/fruits...

bunch of bananas
2 containers of baby spinach
5 or 6 heirloom tomatoes
3 regular tomatoes
bunch carrots
oranges
kiwis
1 or 2 avocadoes
lemons
portabellas
pears
honeydew melon
celery
green onion
red/orange/yellow peppers
apples

Then I have a pantry of staples which I ALWAYS have........maca powder, spirulina powder, raw hemp protein powder, cacao nibs/powder, gogi berries, coconut butter/oil, flax oil, olive oil, sunflower oil, nori sheets, wakame, arame, apple cider vinegar, almond butter, dates, flax seeds......
Sometimes I also buy nuts, like cashews, almonds, or walnuts, depending on whether or not they're required for a recipe.

Here's what we do- my sweet hubby went through Alissa's entire book and wrote down every ingredient we would need to make the dishes. Well, except a couple he knew we would never try- that was 4 recipes at the most. Then he typed it into an Excel document!! We print it off each week and go through the kitchen to see what we need to buy, and check off those items! If I could include in this post I would, just so everyone could see what I mean. If anyone wants the document, I'd be happy to send it. He did a great job at it, and it keeps us SO organized!

We shop each Friday night or Saturday, then I make a quick shopping trip on Wednesday to get things that the kids have eaten up already, usually bananas. We're feeding a family of 4, after all!

I get an organic produce box most weeks. Not so much during the summer because I have a garden. I can somewhat make changes to what is in the box and I tend to get mostly vegetables. We're not big fruit eaters in this house. Husband and daughter mainly eat Red Delicous apples, melons and not a lot else. I eat little to no fruit. Just don't like it.

Most of what I need for the week will be in the box. There is usually 2-3 types of greens, some onions, carrots, maybe some potatoes, and several other things like radishes, beets, pears, apples, broccoli, cauliflower, etc. It's locally grown and whatever is in season.

The box takes care of most of my produce for the week. I will buy a big bag of Red Delicous apples from time to time and occasionally some Granny Smith if the price is right. Will occasionally buy bananas for my husband. I don't eat them and daughter is allergic.

Most of the rest of what I buy I get at the health food store. Such as nuts and seeds, cocao, nibs, mequite flour, and pre-made things like flax crackers and pumpkin seed bars.

We are not a totally raw house so I buy a lot of other stuff that I won't list here.

I shop twice a week for fresh produce at supermarkets or a farmer's market and get a general delivery from an online retailer once a fortnight. My basics are bananas, celery, broccoli or spinach, avocados, mangoes, pineapple, rocket, limes, zuccini, tomatoes, cucumber, red onions, carrots, summer fruits when in season, blueberries and various lettuces. As backup to these I have dried coconut, coconut butter, almonds, cashews, brazil nuts and sunflower seeds, olive oil, honey, dried apricots and dates, cider vinegar, vanilla essence, ginger root, garlic, chili peppers, tahini, oat groats and flax seeds.

I may be missing some things, but this is generally what I buy. [thanks for this thread:::taking notes, also!]

Every week:
I make a green smoothie every morning, so I buy lots of greens! I always buy a LOT of baby spinach (1-2lbs), supplemented with 1-2 other greens such as kale (2 or 3 different kinds), swiss chard, spring mix, dark varieties of lettuce, etc.

Every 2 weeks:
Bananas, about 4-6 hands, (1-3 "discounted for quick sale" are peeled and popped in freezer)
10-15 avocados, only 1-2 ripe, the rest not so ripe (if I can get...these have been somewhat hard to find lately)
5 lbs cashews
1 lb walnuts, almonds or other nut that appeals to me
package of pitted dates
cilantro
5-6 Lara bars (to have on hand if I get stuck out and am hungry)

As needed:
freshly made almond butter (for fudge ball recipe)
spirulina
raw agave nectar
onions
tomatoes
cocoa or cocoa nibs (am using less and less than when I first went raw)
zucchini and squash and pine nuts (for fettucine recipe)
garlic (I bought a braid at the farmers market that will last about 6mos or so)
flax seeds
seeds for sprouting (alfalfa, lentils, wheatberries, mung beans, etc.) [I am really new at sprouting, and am just getting the hang of it]
cold pressed olive oil (lasts a LONG time)
coconut oil (lasts a LONG time)
raw miso (lasts a LONG time)

This is pretty much it, I think!

Radiantly Raw, I am interested in your excel document, but was unable to figure out how to email you.

I'd love the list, too, if you don't mind. :D

In your profile, under contact info, you have your setting marked so that people from the board can't e-mail you. That's also why you can e-mail some, but not others. To change it one would just need to go under "control panel" and edit the "options" section.

To everyone who requested the grocery list my hubby made: I've sent emails to you through the RFT email, but cannot attach a document through there! So, if you'll email me, or just reply to the message I sent, I can respond & attach it through the regular (yahoo, gmail, etc) email programs. Hope that makes sense! Thanks nicollette for explaining how to change that setting, it helped a lot!
