are these carrots organic?
me "yes"
him "they don't taste any different"

I'm still new at this and am not "skilled" enough to explain in layman's terms and detail as to why we try to get organic. I explained the fertilization, the chemicals, blah blah, but I don't think I can do it well. He doesn't have the time to read long links online, or books.
if someone could help me with a simple but slightly detailed explaination of why organic is better than conventional i would greatly appreciate it. something that isn't too long.

thanks everyone!

when someone makes a comment to me like this, i say yeah you're probably right, but i'd rather eat the one that isn't laden with pesticides and other unknown gunk & chemicals. then i ask them, which one would you rather eat? :)

:) well that's kinda what I said. minus the which one would you rather eat. i know he's going to want to have a more detailed explaination as to why we are spending more money on the organic than the other. :) I want to be prepared. This helps keep the raw organic foods in our kitchen b/c then I don't have to worry about any mind changing. :p

oh, its so much more than the lack of chemicals.
certified organic food has to follow certain soil standards.
when you buy conventional produce it is not only laden with chemicals,
it has significantly less nutrition

i remember seeing a chart on this in victoria boutenkos book green for life...
the difference in nutrients in organic vs conventional was STAGGERING.
this is what finally convinced my mum to buy organic.

with organic you are truly paying for MORE.

hope that helps
:)

im not sure if i explained that well enough.
produce gets its nutrition greatly from the soil!
conventional soil is depleted.... next to no nutrients.

organic is so worth it :)

I'll take that as a compliment :D As a 43 year old male I would like to think that I am not yet old, however, I would like to think that I am grounded but not tethered ;) My wife, who is older by 4 1/2 years is very slow to convince that certified organic is worth the money. I'll get her to come around eventually.

Buying organic we also support the Earth. She's staggering under the burden of all the pollution of pesticides, herbicides, etecetera that is KILLING the soil. Organics taste sooo much better in my opinion. On raw I'm a lot more sensitive to tastes than I was on SAD. Vegs grown in living soil has got to be so much better for you than industrially produced vegs. Actually, I often find organics that aren't much more expensive than the regular stuff.

I don't particularly like to shop at Wal-Mart, but they have a pretty decent selection of organics at great prices. So does Sam's Club, and Publix (FL chain.)

Good thread. As my diet got cleaner, I could definately tell a difference between conventional and organic. One instance came to mind regarding tomatoes--was working on the computer and had a plate of assorted tomato chunks I was eating without paying much attention. I had one regular and two organic--all of a sudden, one bite tasted awful (the conventional, of course). I pay the extra for tomatoes whenever I can. Others on my organic list include celery, cucumbers and just about all my greens. We are all worth the investment for our health.

Print this out and give it to him:

You are going to start eating all organic now for the following reasons:

1) It is not saturated with cancer causing chemicals.

2) It is better for the environment and the people who live in it

3) It tastes a LOT better.

4) It contains a lot more vitamins and minerals.

5) Because your wife wants you to!

Have you given him an organic apple and or tomato? I find big differences between the taste of those organic or not.

My dad doesn't understand organic either. My mom basically asked "how would you like to eat a spoonful of fertilizer?" He got wide eyed and said "I wouldn't!" so I think he kind of got the point then. He doesn't do organic, but he's starting to go more "all natural" and less chemicals in his food, which is a start.

Mine said organic food tasted funny and he wanted the regular stuff. So fine. Regular stuff for him! It's cheaper and we don't normally eat the same stuff anyway. He does eat the same stuff from our organic produce box each week and doesn't complain because he doesn't know it's organic. Men!

I forgot to add about the finances.... I pay more for organic produce because I'm worth it! There is no price for good health and eating amazing food in my humble opinion. You can tell him that when he quibbles. In the end you will actually save $$$. You'll see. ;)

Much love to you.

OK, the way I see it is this:

Imagine you're a kid running around on a playground back before WWII, when everything was organic. (There was no word for it yet, because there wasn't anything that wasn't organic.) So you're out on the playground and some kid comes up to you and says, "Hey, I've got this tomato that I grew. I genetically modified it and sprayed it with toxic chemicals... I dare you to eat it."

Well... would you? What if he paid you a dollar to eat a pound of it?

In all seriousness, this isn't far from reality.

Side-note to Juliebove: You might want to reconsider what you call regular. Just a suggestion... because if the conventional produce (chemically grown and genetically modified) is "regular," then that would mean the naturally grown produce must be "irregular," right? And that's a nasty little trap to fall into, don't you think?

It's for this reason that I wish the tables were turned. Wouldn't it be nice if there was no word for "organic," and instead all franken-foods had to be labeled? Then the chem foods wouldn't be "regular," they'd be "chemically grown, genetically modified." And nobody would convince themselves that the natural stuff was weird even before they gave it a chance.

Now if only we could get the politicians and the FDA to think like this...

Some people do not WANT to understand that organic is better nutritionally than convetionally grown food. I can understand why those who are not raw can not get use to the taste of organic products. They are not loaded with the addictive chemicals. I started buying organic and only buy the other stuff when organic is not available. Just think when everyone else comes to this conclusion that organic is best how great the world we be with a lot less chemicals around.
