lately alllll ive been wanting is sprouts. mmmm, SO MUCH, too. i can easily put down three BIG bowls of sprouts a day. ive been mixing them.... clover, garlic, onion, pea shoots, loads of bean sprouts........

any ideas as to what it is my body is wanting from these?
any reason NOT to consume them in copious amounts?
i have to say, ive been eating lower fruit, too, because of my sprout intake,
and i feel marvellous.

im just wondering what it is my body was lacking?

Maybe it isn't lacking. Maybe the sprout intake is meeting your needs? I don't think you will do any harm. I ate rather too many sprouted chickpeas last week and I really can't face them this week. But that's ok. I'm eating other things!

I just had a day with a raw food coach & she advised eating as many sprouts as possible (except for heavy ones like chick peas) especially letting them grow the first tiny green leaves before consumption. Apparently this is the most nutritious & economical food for a raw fooder to eat, full of protein too. So sounds like your body knows exactly what is best for it. How Cool

Thanks CrystalMoon ... I think sprouts are great. I love them all so far.

Sprouts are an awesome food, they are full of aminos and enzymes. If you're craving them, then that's what your body needs right now. Hmm, you've planted a seed in my head. *off to sprout some alfalfa and buckwheat* :D

I have trouble sprouting the small seeds. Will they sprout in a nutmilk bag?? I tried to sprout them in a colander, but I lost alot of them down the drain!! You've planted a seed for me too....off to soak some seeds that I have. They are a mixture of (I think) brocolli, alfalfa, and maybe something else (I threw the bag away that they came in!) Ok...I'm rambling. Thanks. I was worried about consuming sprouts because I've heard some who say they are too high in protein to consume, and they should be avoided. Even though they are high in protein, isn't it better that they are PLANT protein???

Hi the best way I have found to sprout the small seeds like alfalfa is in wide mouthed jars with lids that have tiny holes in for draining the water off & stands that enable the jars to stay at 45 degree angles. I personally use Dr Vogels Bio Snacky jars & seeds.

Sprouting seeds can be found in most health food stores but before investing in all the stuff buy some already sprouted seeds to find out which ones you like.

For sprouting chick peas & larger seeds/beans I use a Go Sprout device that doesnt require rinsing after the initial soaking. I got it at a festival but reckon you can probably get them online.
HTH
Mesh nut milk bags are also good for sprouting but need to be hung over a bowl or sink to drain slowly so they can be abit messy.

I have some sprouters from Sprout People. I got them online. They have inserts in the bottom for small seeds. Even with those I lose a few seeds, but only a few. Like maybe 4-6 each time. They work really well for any type of seed.

I don't think sprouts are too high in protein. They are high percentage-wise in protein, but overall still fairly low in protein compared to some foods.

wow thanks for all the responses you guys.
i have a confession to make! i buy my sprouts. they are organic and very yummy,
BUT i need to start doing the sprouting myself.
even though they are not THAT expensive,
doing it at home would be PENNIES.
(and probably satisfying ;) )

hooray for sprouts!

:D

ps, crystal moon, why would it be bad to eat heavier ones like chick peas? im loving the bean sprouts right now, the denseness is nice for the autumn.

aililiu: I am thinking that the denser sprouts like chick peas is just heavier and if you eat too many you may get a tummy ache....listen CAREFULLY to your body.....I THINK that is what was meant, maybe others will clarify.
