I tend to discard stuff that doesnt sprout after 24 hours...to me it suggests that the food is dead & wasnt raw. Maybe the buckwheat had been treated & the packet didnt state it? Annoyingly this is often the case with dried goods.

I'm with Crystalmoon. Certainly you can still eat it but I would doubt that it is raw. Raw buckwheat sprouts very quickly and the taste is great which is why I love them so much. I sprout by soaking, usually just overnight, draining, rinsing and covering with a small towel and rinsing periodically throughout the day. I have sprouts by late afternoon. Good luck! :D

Darn it... I got it at the bulk section at whole foods. Maybe I'll try again and see what happens. What a bummer. :( Where do you get your buckwheat? I don't know where else to go.

I think I'll give mine one more day to sprout. There's a slimy consistency to the water when I drain it. I've read that buckwheat is technically a fruit, not a grain. I don't get it. Am I eating the seed of a fruit then? I enthusiastically bought a 25 lb bag of it! I'm getting ready to make Alissa's calzones and hope they freeze well.

there is a good possibility that your buckwheat is either toasted Kasha, or chopped buckwheat groats. In either case they wont sprout. What does your buckwheat look like? What color is it? I went through the same experience and wondered why I couldn't get buckwheat to sprout for the longest time.
