View Full Version : How many calories do you eat!?

Holy Calories!!!

I don't usually track such things, but was curious as to my calorie intake to make sure that I was getting enough as I am transitioning to raw. I'm fairly active.. was very active this summer, but I'm not training anymore (triathlons) so it's slowed down a bit. I still work out when I can, but not every day and not as hard. My goals in the off season are to gain strength and speed. Anyway.. I used fitday.com yesterday and did about 1500 on calories w/ about 33% from fat... today it's only 9:45am and I'm already at 1000 calories.. this includes my green smoothie which packs a whopping 550 calories and 30 grams of fat (hemp and coconut oil). Perhaps I can trim down the green smoothie.. only use the coconut oil when I'm going to have a big work out day???? I chase two kids around all day and do a lot of walking w/ them so I'm not inactive on my 'off' days....

today after 1/4 honey dew melon and my green smoothie (at 7am) I HAD to eat something again at 9:30am.... normal? Trying to get used to the what and when to eat. So I had a bowl of sprouted buckwheat cereal w/ nuts, sesame seeds and raisins w/ almond milk.

thoughts, comments, suggestions? How many calories do you try to eat in a day??? Or do you not worry about it as much. I think I need to hit around 2000 to 2500 calories a day.

Unlike many people here I count calories so I will answer your question. I try not to go past 1500 cals. Some days are better than others but that is my personal calorie cut off. My doctor recommends for my 5'6 height and my age of 25 that 1200 cals is good.. well I added 300 more cals because I like night snacking. Shhhhh...... :o

Really 1200 sounds low. :( I read somewhere that a 3 year old should have 1200 cals.. yea yea they are growing or whatever. Hm... I am already at 1422 today and it's not even noon... I'm hungry today.. maybe b/c I did a hard bike ride yesterday???? CRAP! How do you do it!? .... and not feel hungry.

What are your staple meals? jUst curious what you are eating to keep your calories down.

I work out every other day during days my son is in school and I find I have to go to the gym just to be normal.. If I didn't work out and didn't count calories I would be well over 150lbs easy.. and maybe that seems small to some people.. but even at 135lbs my knees were killing me! My body cries for me to keep my weight low.

I think everyone's body is really different. The more healthy fats (from avocados, coconut oil) I eat, the MORE weight I lose or at least the easier it is to keep weight off.

I don't know what it would tell me to count calories. I know that if I am honestly eating way too much, I start to feel heavy (not necessarily overweight, but weighted down). Then I know that it is time to have more green smoothies and to almost fast (just cut out the really heavy stuff, up the liquids) until my body feels happy with what I'm putting in. There are times when the sheer volume of what I'm eating would be shocking to some others, but if it feels good and it's not an emotional eating problem, it's okay.

Another thing that helps is to wait until my body gives me the hunger signal green light (which I do NOT always do). If it's not truly hunger, it's either thirst or an emotional need.

I think I get about 1000-3000 calories per day depending on my needs (ie how much I've been working out, how busy I am, the weather).

I think I would go crazy counting calories. I think it could somehow cause me to gain weight just from focusing so much on it.

I don't count calories and I don't have a bathroom scale ! ! ! I have been losing weight steadily since I went 100% raw on Aug 1st. The flab has been melting off at an amazing rate. My clothes are way to loose on me now and I want to buy new ones but I don't want to step out of these until they are worn out because I know I will never be putting them on again. RAW works. I love the way I can eat anything, anytime, as much as I want so long as its raw. The raw food lifestyle is freedom so throw out your bathroom scale and stop wasting your time counting calories and just eat RAW.

I don't count calories either. I've been slowly but surely losing weight (22lbs so far) without trying. I just try to eat a terrific assortment of different foods and make lots of different recipes. And always have something sweet in the fridge (rasberry cheesecake, fudge, etc) I weigh 1 to 2 times per week out of curiosity. Any more than that and I'd go a little crazy.

The way I see it, I can make it a chore, or a pleasure...I choose door #2.
This is a healthy way to live!!! ( :

I don't count calories for the sake of limiting them, but in keeping a food diary I've been able to track the number of calories I consumed on a regular basis just for my own information. I find that I average around 1400-1700 pretty regularly. And the occasions when I average more than that because of emotional eating, etc, I gain weight. The best thing you can do is to listen to your body. When you are counting calories and trying to stay under or within a certain limit, you are in a sense already working against yourself. You're telling your subconscious that an artificial means is required for you to achieve your goal of health and that by doing so there's an expectation that you will fail it--because why would you impose a limitation if without it you'd succeed?

The alternative is living intentionally. This came as an epiphany to me a while ago and is difficult to explain but made all the difference in the world to me. By living intentionally in the food sense, I simply ensure that everything I eat is because I WANT to eat it...and when my desires line up with the things needed to achieve my goals, everything takes care of itself.

I keep a journal too, but without calories. (more for food reactions)

i'm 5ft1", been raw 8 months, and get between 1800-2200 depending. i keep record (and weigh myself twice/wk) for food diary purposes. i do it for health reasons so i can keep track of what and how much i'm eating, and how i'm feeling etc... i'm very inactive (sit in office all day), so my point is, you need to work out what worksbest for you. i agree with beppa66 on keeping it fun, and remember that Alissa advocates eating as much as your body wants, particularly while transitioning. Listening to your body is the key to staying purely raw.

I hear you there...my calorie intake may seem low, but I always feel satisfied. I suppose this is largely because most of it is vegetables or various sorts, which take up room but don't add too many calories. Maybe adding more vegetable dishes to your diet could help you feel like you've eaten more when really you haven't.

Calories, calories, calories......well, so long as you're aware of what you're eating, knowing that the calorie content of your meals aren't bogus.. you will be great eating all raw foods.. except nuts.. don't eat like 3 cups of nuts or anything.
Vegetable calories never phase me, though.

Can you please give me some advise on how often one should eat avodaco or nuts, seeds, oils etc? In Alissa's book it would seem you can eat nut based burgers, dressings, crackers etc. and avocados each day, but other sites and Raw Gurus say to only rarely eat these fats as they are too high in calories and clog up your arteries etc. What about the fact that they are Raw Plant Fats which work differently in your body to cooked fats and in fact are supposed to not make you fat at all. But just because they mightn't make you fat, that doesn't instantly mean that they are fine to eat in large amounts. Sure you mightn't gain weight, but what about how they affect your overall health?
I went raw over a month or more ago, and was loving whipping up lots of creative things like raw icecream and nut cheese, fudge balls, burgers, crackers, granola etc to have along with green smoothies, salads and fresh fruit etc. but now am confused about whether or not it's ok to have these each day, even in small amounts. Mind you, I don't crave them like I did when first starting out, but I love to eat and they taste great and allow you to be really creative and versatile and also give you a satisfied feeling.

Hope you can help!

Yes everyone is different but in answer to the specific question (I am 5'6 and moderately active but I am 46  ) and my calories range from 1100 - 1200 most days and 1400-1500 on a high day maybe once or twice a month. It is rare to eat much more than that. If I juice it is more like 800. Once or twice a month I have a meal with no regard to calories.

I sometimes put my food intake into fitday just to see what i'm eating. Its usually between 1500 and 2500 and that depends on how much exercise i do. I prefer to track my carbs/fat/protien ratio. Dr Doug Graham advocates a ratio of 80/10/10 for athletes but if you can keep the carbs at leadt 70% and not go over 20% on fats you will be extremely healthy. I usually find that my % ratio is about 70/20/10 without trying. Trying to keep the fat at 10% is almost impossible if you add nuts and seeds or if i take a larabar on a long run! I dont get hung up about it, i just do it out of curiosity. 99% of the time i'm within the optimum range and i'm feeling really good with it.:D

I think the general opinion is that when you first go raw and are transitioning these 'heavier' foods help you. It can be difficult to change from a heavy cooked meals to light fruit and salads and you may end up craving that heavy full feeling. As time goes on you will want the heavier food less and less. Many people say that if they eat too many nuts and oils it makes them feel lethargic.

If you want to eat them right now - go ahead - your body will tell you when its time to ease up.

How many calories do you try to eat in a day??? Or do you not worry about it as much.

I don't even think about it much less worry. Worry creates tension and an acidic body. One cannot be healthy that way.

Stop worrying, have fun and play with your food! :D

Not sure what everyone else said. I skimmed through.
I don't count calories. I'm 25 and thought I was 5'6 but apparently my mom measured me wrong when I was 18. I'm really 5'4 1/2 buuuut I'm rounding up.
so, 5'5. :) anyway, i recently figured up the calories I usually eat. I found out I'm eating 1200 to 1400 everyday..... Closer to 1200 but I do 1400 b/c I'm sure I may miscalculate something in there. And I'm not hungry. I couldn't possibly eat more. not hungry or no time.

i don't advocate obsessing over calories HOWEVER, i do think some think they can eat all the raw they want and then get frustrated when they start gaining weight. well, nuts, etc.. are VERY high in calories so of course you won't lose if you eat a lot of the high calorie high fat stuff. i do count calories, but i think you could listen to your body and ONLY EAT WHEN ACTUALLY PHYSICALLY HUNGRY and journal it. if we only eat when we are actually hungry and we make wise choices, i believe we will lose weight.

just my 2 cents.

i find i need much less food on a raw diet, especially the longer i am raw, than i did on a cooked vegan diet. i am normally full at around 1100-1400 calories. maybe 2-4 times a month i have 1500-1700 calories and i can barely eat the next day! i think that my body requires less food on a raw diet b/c i'm getting much more nutrition from the foods i eat now. i am also paying attention to my body much more closely and learning to eat what i want, when i want and only when i'm hungry. after years and years of dealing with eating disorders, it feels great to finally be able to do this:D

just for reference i'm not super active- i work out about 5x per week, short runs of 3-5 miles or hilly power walks along with pilates & some body weight strength exercises here & there. i've learned to chill out with the exercise since going raw. i'm 5'3 and don't own a scale but am somwhere between 100-110 pounds. i have lost some weight since going raw a month ago and i seem to be continuing to do so.

The key for me to keeping calories lower is REALLY watching my fat intake. I have a couple brazil nuts a day, and 1/3 of an avocado in my salads, and then I snack on raw fruit or veggies.

I am with you freebird. I don't count anything either. If it's raw and I want it I eat it. Some days I eat a whole lot of food and some days very little - whatever I'm feeling that day. I have been through too many SAD diets in the past where I obsessed about calories and fat grams and yada, yada....and it drove me crazy and I was always hungry and kept losing and gaining weight. One of the reasons I love raw is because I don't have to count anything. I keep a food diary but for me it's more to keep track of my "cheats" than anything. Meaning those times when I put something cooked in my mouth at which time I usually have some sort of bad reaction and I want to write it down so I don't eat that thing again. I have no idea about calorie counts, fat grams..all that stuff anymore and I don't want to know - it's just too much work! It would be too much like SAD dieting to me and I don't want any part of that anymore EVER!!:( This is waaayyyy more fun and I can eat whatever I want!:p

Hmmm...

Today it finally occured to me that since breaking my juice fast 10 days ago, I never feel hungry... and since I try to eat only when I am hungry, my intake is not much. About one cup of raw juice and a salad and kombucha tea each day. Turns out I'm only hitting about 400 calories, tops. I don't know what to do about it... my energy is great, I feel good, and I don't want to eat if I am not hungry bc then I feel sick.

Once again... hmmmmm....

I think it's really easy to lose weight eating whatever you want (as long as it's raw) if you're overweight. It really seems harder to lose weight eating whatever you want if all you want to lose is 10-20 pounds...

Just a thought.

Amen! I think it may even out for everyone eventually, but obese people probably have a higher metabolic rate just from having to carry their mass around, and it probably perserveres longer throughout their raw journey.

I only want to lose 20 pounds, and so far....very, very hard.

I do not count the calories either and I am progressing with my weight loss. I began my journey of 100% raw on Oct 1 of 2007. I always have a huge Tablespoon of hemp and coconut oil in my morning green smoothie and raw cashew butter or raw almond butter as well. I am approaching 50 years young and my metabolisim is faster now than at any other time in my life. Between eating 100% raw and rebounding on a daily basis and lifting small weights 4 x a week, I think my metabolisim is now working good because my bodies cells are now thriving. Some day's I will eat what seems like an enormus amount of food and day's like yesterday was just a morning smoothie and an evening salad. I alway's remember to drink plenty of reverse osmosis water as well.

I think calories do count but since fruits and veggies have low calories but nutrient dense, you have to count how many you take in & put out. Raw fats will satiate you. Not fats from nuts but fats like avocados and fermented coconut cream and raw dairy.

www.fredericpatenaude.com is a good site for raw vegans. Visit that site for helpful and insightful tips on how to do raw vegan way.

I was eating like 2500 calories a day cooked vegetarian and I GAINED weight from 86 kg to 90 kg, I'm 1.93 m, male. I was wondering that on raw we could eat less. I mean 2.000 calories is low by junk food standards... it's just 2 Mcdonald's meals, or 100 g of potato chips and some sweets = 1000 calories, thats a SNACK. But by raw standards, 2000 calories = 4 kg of apples. That's a LOT.

Essene Gospel of Peace book also recommends 2 meals instead of 3. I eat at 12:00 and 18:00 as directed by the book, according to hunger but I get cooked food cravings EVERY DAY.

I do not think that you can get enough foods from 2 meals a day. The foods that we eat have a lot of fibre and our stomach is not big. The amount of food that would fit in my stomach will not give me half of what I need for the day.

1200 is not really low. Not LOW low. I would say it is on the low end of average caloric intake.

I noticed that many Americans think that 1200 is like starvation, however around the world 1200 cal is quite normal for people around the world as being the low end of average caloric intake. And most definately, these people are a whole lot slimmer than the average American.

Hell, there are plenty of Americans who claim anything under 2000 is low and is starvation. America, and to some degree, the UK has some skewed ideas of low caloric intake yet they are so overweight compared to the rest of the world.

I don't count calories. It did nothing for me non-raw and most likely it will do nothing for me raw.

The only time I have counted calories in my life was in my late teens/early 20s when I was purposely obsessing about dieting and tried to eat low calorie, because I was trying to be a model.

I wouldn't say I was medically anorexic, since my anorexia wasn't a compulsion, but more like a lifestyle that I did choose to stop the day I thought I was perfect model size, then I stopped cutting my calories very low.

I don't equate calorie counting with that in my life, just something I have no interest in doing, or shall I say, I am too lazy to do right now.

The problem is that you need a certain amount of nutrition and the chances of getting it rise as you eat more food.
I could not get my required nutrients on 1200 calories of food. Perhaps if I ate fractional foods that have had something taken out of them I could but not on wholefood and I only want to eat wholefood.

What made you start counting calories, if I may ask?
Two reasons.
I was loosing too much weight. If I go below 2K per day for a few days in a row I loose weight. I am 105 lbs at the moment and have had to give all of my best jeans to my sister. It takes me ages to fall in love with a pair of jeans and now I have to start all over again.
I checked up on my nutrient intake using cronometer and to get my nutrients I have to have a lot of food.

rawfigure---how do you count your calories when you juice? I really want to figure out how to do it.

ladypeace---what do you eat that keeps you so full at 1200 calories or so? I am trying to get my calories down to that level but I don't think I'm getting the right balance of nutrients so I get very hungry.

Not sure if your first question was answered yetbout calorie counting Anglo ing buttt since juicing takes out the fibre I was told you minus 4 calories for every one gram of fibre. So the strawberries I juiced this morning had 2 g of fibre so I would minus 8 calories from the 27 calories it was normally. I use an app called MyNetDiary to check some of this stuff, it's free.

Eating below 1200 calories per day is not good for your body. Your metabolism will slow down and your body will shut off processes in order to live on the small amount of calories you are giving it. Not a good idea.

... as a doctor will be able to help you with any factors that may be specific to your situation.

I doubt that very much.

I doubt that very much.

I was going to make the same reply but feel that I am dealing with a spam post anyway so it was not researched properly. This thread is not about "a weigh loss program". It is the opposite.

Have you read Alyssa's book, LOLF? eating a raw and living lifestyle FREES you from the stress of counting calories.

In my raw business, I get this question a lot. I do not count calories. * When you eat a Raw diet, there is no need to count calories and fat grams like other diets require.* The only fat in the food comes from Nuts, Coconut,*and Avocado*which are considered heart healthy fats.* Nuts are very good for your diet and give you needed oils and fats.* Eating the SAD diet, they caution you about eating nuts, but*they are an asset to the raw diet.**
*
So, you can rest assured that you're*feeding your body the best possible food available.* Rather you need to lose weight, gain weight, heal your body, detox, or calm your mind, raw and living food puts you right where you need to be!*
*
So, there is no need worry about counting calories or fat grams, if you are eating a raw and living diet. You WILL lose weight, if you body needs to, without the stress you have with other "diets". *If your body does not need to lose weight, you will maintain and detox with a Raw diet. *You are giving your body the proper raw and living foods it needs to build good health and receiving food that truly nourishes your*body....whatever your needs are.

The Calorie calculator allows you to calculate how many calories you should eat a day in order to lose a certain amount of weight by a certain date.
For example: If you are 86kg (189.6Ibs) start of November and would like to be 78kg (172Ibs) by Christmas, you would specify that you want to lose 8 kilograms (17.6Ibs) in 2 months. This is how it differs to other calorie calculators which only allow you to calculate the amount of calories daily for a specific weight.

and it will be grossly inaccurate for most people!
