isn't raw - it's pasteurized. So why is it in so many raw recipes?
I was craving the stuff tonight and had some in a raw taco and also on an apple with salt...

Is it ok to eat if you have candida?

I have read that it is okay, because the yeast is dead. Live yeast, however, will really mess you up. I also have candidia issues, and have never been aggravated by nutritional yeast.

Cool, thanks! Never had it myself, what does it taste like?

It's kinda nutty/cheesy. Some people love it, and some hate it. When I first tried it, I was expecting it to taste like cheddar cheese - it doesn't. When I tried it again, I loved it.

It's not raw but it's live.

Actually, no...
"Nutritional yeast is grown on mineral enriched molasses and used as a food ingredient. At the end of the growth period, the culture is pasteurized to kill the yeast. Live yeast is very different because it continues to grow in the intestine and actually uses up the vitamin B in the body instead of replenishing the supply."

So interesting... this is in so many recipes. It's one of those things that I thought it was interesting that it was raw...
And it's not! I've gotten spoiled over so many things that I hear are not raw after I hear about them in raw food recipes.

Aw, well, my diet's still better than it was before raw. And I drink hot tea even though that's not raw, so what's some maple syrup and nutritional yeast? :)

I guess you could cut slack on it because it has vitamin b and can be bought with vitamin b 12. So it could be considered as a supplement?

I think nutritional yeast is just "one of those things"...ya know...those ingredients that you'll see in raw food recipes that add flavor or texture or... but it's not "really" raw at all and you just have to kinda either decide what YOUR own personal thresh hold is for allowances of that nature or just totally remove them from the recipe altogether. It falls right into the category with bottled (Frontier, mainly) spices/seasonings, maple syrup, cashews and oats from the HFS, nama shoyu (some say it's not TRULY raw due to the soybeans being cooked before the sauce is process and fermented, etc.) and others.
So again, it's one of those "pick and choose your battles" things. I use it very, VERY sparingly but have also found that recipes calling for it, I can leave out and still get great results!

I'm addicted to it. seriously. I don't know why. I have been known to eat 1/3 c mixed with olive oil and salt. I love it. I can't get enough of it. I used to put it on popcorn with tamari and eat SUPER large mixing bowl full of it and practically lick the bowl clean for the very last flakes. My behavior around Nutr. Yeast disgust my dh.
WHY do I love it so? It is probably hands down my most favorite food on earth.

If I were at WFS, where would I find nutritional yeast? What section?

This is EASY!! I just moved from Dallas in June. Your best bet is to buy it in the bulk bins area. Sometimes they are out, but if you ask customer service, they'll send someone back to fill it right away. There's also the "Red Star" brand that is in a container on a shelf over where the baking stuff is, where you find seasonings and such - MUCH more expensive than the bulk area.
I don't know what part of Dallas you are in, but I have noticed that the Whole Foods stores there tend to have varied focuses - the store in Arlington is the most vegan-friendly store there. The store up in Plano is huge, and I've always had great luck finding things there. The new store down in the Preston/Forest area feels all wrong and is hard to find things in. It looks like they tried to mimic Central Market. YUCK.
You can also probably find it at places like Roy's or Katy's (small single shops)but I don't know how much they'd charge. If you're in Irving, give "Years To Your Health" a call - it's my favorite herb shop in the Dallas area. I believe they carry it as well, and they also have a nice supply of raw honey and they carry psyllium husks and raw hemp powders as well.

THANK YOU Rawkinlocs! You're the only person who took the time to actually answer my question. I appreciate you!

I usually frequent the Whole Foods at Preston/Park or Coit/Beltline. I have noticed they do vary greatly in what they stock. Once in a while I got to Sprouts. I just didn't know where to look for the yeast but it was not high on my list either. Anyway, thanks for the info.

Bulk isle for sure and probably packaged in the nutrition area.

I know it's dubious, but the bottom line is for me is that it helps me to not eat cheese, so it's worth it.

What is nutritional yeast? The only yeast the Whole Foods and Sprouts in my area carries is the brewers yeast (by product of beer). Where would I get nutritional yeast?
Thanks!

I would think that Whole Foods would carry that-it is a big store! I would ask the manager or someone who works there what aisle it is in. :)

They are not the same, but very similar. Both are dead so they both offer the same nutritional boost, but Nutritional yeast tastes better because of the molasses.
Here's a website link (http://www.foodsubs.com/LeavenYeast.html) that gives descriptions of different kinds of yeast, including brewers and nutritional.

zaphirah - i have your type of obsession not with brewers yeast but with a mix of spirulina with pollen/mesquite. i have to eat copius amounts of the stuff just for the taste and practically lick the bowl clean! from the moment i first tried spirulina i've been obsessed with it, and am shocked to hear that most people hate it so much!! god i must seem so strange.. (sorry, not really bout nut. yeast, never tried that..)

Whole Foods? I found a big can of nutritional yeast in the supplement section at my Whole Foods. It was with protein powders and such. I thought that was odd.

You can find it in the nutrional section, but becarefull often times certain companies add whey protein(from milk) to there nutrional yeast. I read about that some where when I was researching it. however, that only matters if it bothers you personally, golly do I wish I could rememeber where.....
but if you go to a place like Whole Foods or Wild oats, or some place comprable they should have someone in the supplement section to help you find what you need/looking for, good luck!!

I really don't get using yeast as it's never tasted cheesy when I've tried it (on pizza, pasta). I have found the red pepper cheese recipe that doesn't have yeast in it tastes plenty cheesy on it's own. To me adding yeast to it, would unnecessarily be adding something unhealthy when it tastes great on it's own. Maybe I'm using it wrong or not adding enough? Hmmm...

Notwell, I haven't found nutritional yeast useful either. I love that red pepper cheese recipe too! Yum! :p :)
