View Full Version : why is raw so big out west and so

new on the east coast? I can only find a resource or 2 out here. It really makes it difficult and I am so envious of people who have restaurants to go to! why doesn't Noho have something-ANYTHING for raw fooders. It's such a liberal town! There have been vegan restaurants all over the place, but no raw foodies anywhere, as far I can see.
Maybe I need to do something about that. But where to start? I don't know!

Start a meetup. You'll be surprised who responds. They're all saying the same thing yet, no one wants to take the steps to make it happen. I actually know raw foodists in, where are you? Massachusetts? One of them is in my mastermind group.
My feeling is, you've found a need; fill it. :)

This is even funnier. I don't know where each city is, but another in my mastermind group is from Texas. Create a meetup. There are others looking for you as well.

I was thinking the same, there is nothing here where I live in Bloomington, IL and to be honest I don't want to open a restaurant but I do want to teach Raw Food and that is why I'm going to Alissa's class but I can't imagine owning a restuarant, I could however see myself owning a store that carry only living Organic food and maybe from there I could hire some Raw Chefs to come and possibly make raw food. hmmm something to think about.

There are already some meetups, 2 I think. But they are always on days I have work or school. I already meet up with two ladies here. It's easier to manuver the lunch when it's just the 3 of us.
But as far as a restaruant... I would totally work there part time..... (school)
SOOOOOOOOOOOOO someone should open a restaurant in Dallas please.

I actually live in SoCal, but I moved to a more remote town in SoCal and there is ONE health food store:eek: I moved from a very progressive area in in CA so I'm a little bummed. I was thinking the same thing about starting something up out here. I am going to start a meet up group and see what happens from there. Good luck to you!:D

I love Bloomington but there is nothing Raw about this town I even have the hardest time find raw fruits and veggies, even the farmers market doesn't carry a lot of fruits. Anyway I don't want to go to off topic.

I've lived on both coasts. And perhaps it was just the specific areas I lived in on the east coast, but the people there were very set in their ways and not willing to try new things. They seemed to have the idea of, "This is the way we've always done it and we'll keep doing it this way!" They were also very aloof to newcomers to the area.
One school of thought is that the west coast was setteled more recently. Unless you are an American Indian, you had to travel to the west coast to settle here. Those who did so were pioneers. They were probably much more likely to embrace change and try new things. So it's likely if you now live on the west coast, you were raised in that spirit. Of course I could be totally off base here, but it's a thought!

dh says as soon as the dc are out of the house we are moving to a more raw-friendly environment-and he's not even a raw foodie! LOL! There are a TON of health food resources, esp in the Noho-Amherst area, but NOTHING for raw fooders. I just went to meetup.com but they want me to pay $72 to start my group. I think I will still do it, but I have to really think about it first.

That is so nice that you have such a supportive husband! My husband is not a raw fooder either... but he's pretty supportive. I think he will be more so once he sees the changes in me. He actually got himself a weat grass shot yesterday at a juice place! :D I was so excited! Sorry to change the subject:p

That's only if you do it for 6 months. I just did it and did three months at $15/month for a total one time payment of $45, because that's what I could do for now. You have the option to change it later. You can also do one month for about $20.

I am in DEEEEEEP South Texas...like 20 miles from Mexico. I think I am the ONLY raw fooder in this area...I would love to find others but I think the Fajitas, and charro beans will keep most of the population in front of the stove or grill..
SO..I am so glad this place is here!!:D

Do people actually meetup in person on or from facebook? That's the purpose of meetup.com. People actually do come together and meet up for whatever draws them. Are FB and MU the same?

Within Facebook you can setup a group and also setup an event for the group, that is what I have done with it and it's free, but if there are benefits to using meetup.com I'll more then willing to pay. Also you Facebook you can connect with a network of people in your area and advertise your event for free and they even have paid advertisement.

They do have advertising but it isnt' bothersome, I rarely even notice it.
I do like the concept of Meetup.com being that it means you'll meetup, but I'm guessing the cost is so that you don't have advertisement, that is the only benefit I see.

Here in AZ I know that there are some raw foodists but to me it still feels like there are none because I don't get to be around them and the only raw restaurant has closed down. (Heard the food was not impressive anyway.) Feels like the raw population is just as sparse as other places even though several have popped on to this forum intermittantly from my area. I have never seen the long-time raw foodists here though. I did go to one potluck and had a good time but also felt very uncomfortable around the people - they are different and I don't know what to say to them, with them, and back to them. (There was one guy who seemed normal and tried to keep the conversation going but also made me the focus of group attention being new and I did get uncomfortable.) (They all seemed to know each other quite some time.) Some of them actually creeped me out and I don't know why so I have been hesitant to return but it is kind of a moot point since I no longer have a vehicle and public transportation is rare and ridiculous out here. The ones I am aware of are quite far from me.
Also since I have been very ill and the raw foodist that I knew best was hostile about it and told me that she did not have time for sick people and even though I took drastic measures and even drank my own urine (as she advised) in desperation - I do not appreciate the condemnation that comes from some of these people. Apparently my healing is going to need more time and since major nutritional deficiencies have been found in me by the allopaths it is clear to me that just being raw and following my intuitive cravings was not enough to make me well. I know that this will be controversial for some people here but it is my truth that I am living.
So in conclusion I would like also to be around more raw people I think but just because we have raw in common does not mean that we will be good company for each other, just as being a certain race or religion or having the same employer means that we will be friends or supportive or have anything but that one thing to share if we even want to.

O.k., major difference with meetup.com and facebook. Just signed up with fb and looked for raw food. It came up with a WHOLE lot of people and, in order for me to find out who is raw, I've got to read through a WHOLE bunch of profiles which I have no time/desire to do.
On meetup.com, the meetups are specifically for the group(s) that wants to meet up. Yes, I did check the "groups"... I wont even mention what I ran into here.
So, I would still recommend meetup.com over any other. It's free to sign up. IF you want to hold the meetup yourself, charge an extra $5 or so to cover your costs.
Check it out. You can do meetups by city and meetups by topic. Really easy.

I run a mom's club with meetup.com and absolutely love it. The members pay dues which cover the cost for one year ($144) It has a calendar where you can post events and members RSVP. There is a message board which is great for posting questions etc. (kinda like here) And a place to post pictures and upload files......yeah , I love it!
There was a raw food potluck group with meetup.com for here in SWFlorida, but they shut it down before I could join up....:(
I think Naples (where I live) would be perfect for a raw food restaurant. It has the most millionaires per capita in the nation!!! Lots of older people with money looking for the fountain of youth in paradise!

Don't mean to hijack but how big is it in San Francisco? Anyone know?
I'm hoping to move there in the spring. It's hell being raw in Norway, I mean the only place I can order an excalibur in land wants like 500+ dollars for the 9 tray.
I'm going to get rawquipped in the US. I have this mental image of farmer markets with endless rows of veggies and fruit, a health food store heaven and vegan menus all over the place. But I haven't been there so I haven't a clue really :p

What's interesting about many raw food restaurants is, at one time, it was hard to GET a salad. It was all about "gourmet". I think that's changing.

Lilly, I used to hear that U.S electricity is different from European so you need to buy some kind of adaptive equipment to run it over there without frying it. Travelers are told that for their hair dryers and shavers and stuff. I never went there with electrical equipment so cannot verify.

I run my sewing machine on a power converter as I got it in the US, the power converter mum got at wal mart for like 20 bucks, well worth saving hundreds! - And since I plan to live in SF for a few years it's all good :)

Hi Stacy!
The restaurant did open and was a huge success (I heard). I was waiting for it to calm down a bit before I checked it out, but I waited too long. The owner of the building sent a notice that he was going to tear it down. It was devastating to Cynthia who had worked so hard and spent so much money on the restaurant. She had planned to reopen, but I believe that family issues (and possibly her negative experience) is the reason she has not. Hopefully, one day!
