I wanted to introduce myself. I am not sure if I will go raw. I cannot afford any books right now so I am dependent on the net.
My name is Sandy. I am 35 and I am addicted to food. All kinds. I did Atkins bit it never fills me up. I have done all the other diets but they cause me to binge on carbs. I feel like a failure because I have PCOS and have yet to control my food intake. My weight is about 230 right now. My home is full of junk.
So that is about it. I am here to look and see if this is doable for me. Nothing more.

Hey Sandy,

I know you can do this without having books because there is so much information online via this forum and several other websites, I don't think there is no reason why you can't get started at least a little bit, there are so many recipes on the board.

I have PCOS as well and if I were you I would try my best to start controlling your eating habits if at all possible because it might get worse or turn into more problems. I know that is easier said then done but please think about you future and how not taking care of youself now may lead to more problems later and lots of medical bills.

I'd say a good start is getting rid of the junk and starting with the new. Maybe you can find someone to help walk you through this.

There is TONS of information on the internet that there is very little need for books. I have a lot of raw food books but only a couple I use. lol. I get most of my stuff on-line. Type in raw food on u-tube to get vidoes and information. There is TONS of stuff on this site- recipes, questions, accountability. Also look at all the blogs, often they have recipes and stuff attached to them.

My personal opinion, Alissa offers a DVD and is one of the only ones to do so. It really does help to watch someone prepare dishes. I think it would be a worthwhile investiment. Start trying out dishes and make it fun rather than "you have to". For me, if I say I can have ___(insert junk food) if I really want to, then it helps me stay focused on healthy eating because IF I really wanted to, it's there. Usually I don't. I feel pressured when I feel i CAN"T have something! I know, weird. :D

So glad you found us. This is such a supportive space - no judgement here!:o

There are also many here who have found the raw food approach to eating the answer to their health issues and I truely believe this approach is excellent for those with cooked food addictions.

The amazing thing that I and many others have found is that YES cooked food can be very addictive to some. And for those raw food is truely an amazing discovery.

After eating eating raw for a few days/weeks/months (its different for each) you loose the addiction. You will find you actually miss meal times with an "OMG I forgot to eat!" Both the unquenchable hunger & never ending cravings slowly go away!

Give it a try!

As far as recipes; well Raw is becomming so mainstream there are raw blogs and sites all over the place. www.youtube.com has loads also great for inspiration is www.greenchefs.tv they have more recipes than you can count also great uncooking videos to watch on the site; look for there for raw chef Vanessa Sherwood.

Also if you can scrape together any $$ please purchase Alissa'a book AND DVD. Her DVD is over THREE HOURS long and and so inspirational. And then there is right here on RFT again more recipes than you can shake a stick at.

And dont be shy ask whatever question you want to; this board has newbies joining everyday and old f**ts to help out too.

Please please read through as many of the archives as you can as there is a wealth of info there!

All the best,

EPPP

IMO, the raw food lifestyle is all about good health. Achieving your ideal weight is a side benefit of getting your body right. The body is an amazing thing, given the right conditions it will respond with good health provided it has not suffered any irreversible damage and even then it will do the best it can to be as healthy as it can be. Good luck and have a fun journey.

Hi there, I also want to be 100% raw in the near future & have had many problems with binge eating in the past. I am finding that raw food really does fill me up physically, much more than Atkins ever did plus it gives me loads of energy & a positive frame of mind rather than the heavy negative feelings i got from eating meat protein. When I overeat now it is because I am over tired or emotionally upset. I can feel the process so much clearer since eating high raw & i get a chance to make a choice these days instead of finding myself in the middle of a binge & not knowing why! Even when I do overeat is in a minimal way now & not the self haming experience it used to be.
Raw vegan food lifestyle is helping me learn to truly love & nourish myself in positive ways & I wish this for you too.

HI! I don't know if I have PCOS. I know that I have cysts there and I know that they hurt - sometimes really badly. And I KNOW that the only thing that relieves the pain is RAW!

Hi. I'm a food addict.

I have tried: The Orange diet, South Beach, Atkins, Weight Watchers, Anorexia, Compulsive Exercise, Obesity, Over Eaters Anonymous, Vegetarianism, Veganism (cooked), and hundreds of my own screwey rules and diets.

THE ONLY THING that got my cravings/urges/binges under control was RAW.

I have been detoxing and going raw on and off for about 18 months. This time is finally "stuck".

I can never go back to cooked food because I am addicted to it.

I have an extra copy of 12 Steps to Raw Foods by Victoria Boutenko if you would like me to send it to you you can email me your mailing addy. it really breaks down the way cooked food is addictive. She really understands because she was there at nearly 300 lbs when she went raw.

Much love and peace to you. The journey is not always smooth, but so well worth the trip!

Hi Sandy --welcome!!

I'm new too and I'm totally addicted to crap food too! I have only been raw for a about 7 days and its being pretty hard not to fall back into those eating habits I've had for along time,(I've had a couple slip ups) but reading this forum has really given me strenghth --everyone is so knowlegable and kind. Nobody will make you feel bad if its not as easy for you as some.

So just keep reading--its really does help.
Also Sandy--you and I are the same weight. I can relate to the not being filled up issue and all the crazy diets, so have faith in yourself and we can help each other not binge on all the junk. :)

Welcome Sandy--as you can see there's lots of support. No matter what your path, we're all on this journey together. Expect to stumble along the way, but don't worry, there will be numerous friends here to help you back up on your feet. I'm also a food addict--I like to say that food was my drug of choice. I just jumped in on 7/7/07 and have made just a very few deviations along the way. But it is an incredible journey. You will learn a lot about this lifestyle and even more about yourself! Come give it a try.
