My skin has always been very oily. Now that I have made this drastic change in diet, my skin is dry and very uncomfortable.

I am considering consuming maybe a tablespoon of coconut oil daily, but I am trying to lose weight.

Any comments or advice, please?

Sounding like a broken record now, but what about sugar scrubbing? My skin has never been so soft! ~ Cathy

Never heard of sugar scrubbing. Tell me about it.

It exfolitates the skin and allows moisturizer to penetrate more easily. No need to go to an expensive salon because they are so easy to make at home.

Basic recipe:

*1/2 cup sugar (white cane), no need to buy organic
*1/4 cup (or less) oil of choice (sesame, jojoba, whatever)
*remnants of any natural bar soap you may be using (or just get vegetable glycerin from the hfs)
*and essential oils

You can tweak it up a bit by adding honey, lemon juice, essential oils, vitamin E oil, dried herbs from your own garden, and so on...

I apply all over my body in much the same way I would when dry brushing; leave on for a few minutes (btw, I recommend that you do this in a dry tub - it can get quite messy); then turn on shower to rinse off: and voila, you feel tingly and baby soft!

Think we have some more recipes in the Abundance thread ~ Cathy

I have heard that dry skin is a sign of detox as the skin is one of the largest organs. I remember having dry skin in the beginning so.. could be. A lot of people like Coconut oil as a moisturizer. I'm rather fond of sesame oil and shea butter.

It is really important to consume loads & loads of water during detox. Dry skin often means dehydrated body. Also up your intake of omega 3 oils to help keep skin supple. HTH

Raw foods, increasing water, and eating and drinking coconut oil got rid of my dry skin.

I like this sugar brushing thing. How interesting!

Thank all of you so much. I appreciate every suggestion.

I try to be careful what I put on my skin because it is my understanding whatever we put on our skin is absorbed into the body. Oils such as coconut oil and/or sesame should be a good suggestion. I will try this today.

I itch all over! It is normal for me to itch some around the waistline, where my clothes fit, in the winter, but this past week has been over most of my upper body and very miserable. Last night I could not sleep for the itching so finally got up and "bathed" in magnesium gel from International Health and finally got a bit of sleep. Today I will also bathe in coconut oil since that is what I have in the house.

Appreciate any and all suggestions. I am very open to ideas to try!

I have used a sugar scrub and it's wonderful but if you live in a warm climate watch out for the little sugar ants . My shower was full of them the next day...

not eating enough fat can lead to dry skin. eating fat doesn't necessarily make you gain weight. that's SAD dieter's mentality imo.

I think today I will begin "eating" a tablespoon of coconut oil per day. Will post if I feel a response. THANKS. Since I do have a weight problem, that has been a difficult decision to come to.

in fact, in many people (myself included) eating more fat can help me to lose. it keeps me a lot more satisfied and energized and coconut oil helps increase the metabolism and provide energy. don't be afraid of coconut oil! many people use it solely for weight loss benefits. its absolutely amazing for the skin. i eat sizeable amounts of coconut oil/coconut meat on a daily basis.

I take a tsp morning and night of coconut oil, it actually sped up my weight loss. AND no more dry skin! Woo-hoo! Good luck. PS Salt glows are great too (a little rougher than sugar).

I just spotted some coconuts in our little local WalMart this week. I will just start buying them. We live in the boonies and a LOT of items are not available here. Will buy some coconuts TODAY!

You have all been so helpful and I really appreciate it!

My weight loss was going great until my knee problem. For the past month I have not been able to exercise. Hope to get back to normal in a couple of weeks.

When I was losing, I felt that the avocados (sometimes two per day) were helpful and that was also fat. I am still eating the avocados and my skin continues to get more dry. In fall and winter I always have some problem, but not like this year.

Thanks for all the ideas. Please keep them coming!

Hi,

I have a question regarding coconut oil? Do you keep yours in the refrigerator? I find it a bit difficult to use when its kept in the frig but the package suggests it. I also read that it will stay fresh for quite some time out of the frig.

I tried the sugar scrub and WOW it really helped. What a huge relief! How grateful I am for the suggestion and thankful for Raw Food Talk! I've had extreme problems with my skin. At times it is so dry it actually hurts, especially when I move or when anything is against it, like when I sit on a wrinkle in my clothing. It has been so dry for so long.
Yeshia, how much of the silica do you take and how often? I want to try that as well.

Hi I started with " Original Silica Gel" by Hubner 1 tablespoon twice a day in my smoothie. Can find it in a health store.

Recently I changed to this one it was very expensive buT lasts longer so in long run is cheaper.

It is called BioSil by Jarrow Formulas. It requires only 6 drops per day and absorbs much better and You don't need to refrigerate it.

Hope this helps:)

i don't. on is on the kitchen counter and one on the bathroom counter for us to use as a moisturizer. it will go from hard, to soft, to liquid depending on the temp in the house though.

I have really benefitted from daily oil pulling with coconut oil. It is a ayurvedic practice that is something like swishing oil in the mouth for 20 mins or so. Have you heard of it? I have EXTREMELY dry, sensitive skin. I have had many comments about my skin looking really good since starting, ( granted eating raw is a big part of it too). My sis says it also evened out my skin pigment . If you're interested there's many threads here and on the web about oil pulling.

I have started cleaning my face with coconut oil too.I believe Alissa Cohen does this and talks/writes about it.I added a little German Chamomile to a jar and it feel great to use .

Good luck and keep posting what works!

Sharon

Thank you Yeshia for the information. I will order some of the Bio Sil. I started the oil pulling a couple days ago. On the first day, I felt light headed. I think it is doing something good.

I read in the book Raw food/real world, that she would use coconut oil on her skin to keep it soft. I haven't tried it, other than when I'm making something with coconut oil, I'll clean of the spoon and rub it into my hands and it was really quite nice.

An easy way to found make sure I'm getting enough fats is to simply take a look a my hands. The reason why I say my hands, is that hands seem to be the first place to dry out, and they seem to change on a daily basis.

If the 'cuticle' or 'nail' folds are peeling in ANY way or on ANY nail, then you have a problem. If you think about it, this is just the outside of your body, imagine the inside.

I find I require a certain amount of fat to stop this peeling. If I only take in 20grams of fat/day (like many raw foodists take in) my cuticles will begin to peel, just a little. If I take in less fat they crack and bleed. About 25 - 45 grams/day seems about right for me (that's about 10 - 18% on 2200 cals). Infact, I find my skin best at 45gr/day or more.

Btw, I don't like fat either. And until I find a way to be able to lower the fat and still have beautiful hands (and skin all over), I'm gonna stick to this method.

I'll be experimenting with other foods, and I'm no expert. I'm still taking in ideas.

It's an excellent way to combat dry skin, both inside and out and you will not gain weight from eating coconut oil. In fact quite the opposite and it's the good fat even though it's saturated. I limit myself to 3 TBLS per day for internal use. Whether I add it to prepared foods or eat it right from the jar. It's excellent to massage into the scalp and run it to the ends of your hair leave on for approximately 15 mins., then wash out with mild, preferably natural shampoo. I also use it for an all over body moisturizer, including face. It's not greasy if you rub it in thoroughly. BESURE to buy organic, cold or first pressed, virgin, UNREFINED only. The taste is completely different if refined and obviously less nutritious. For additional info, there are lots of websites devoted to coconut oil and you can find several books devoted to it as well. Hope this helps.
