If I'm not 100% raw and just transitioning, which is healthier: a bowl of lightly steamed veggies or a large amount of raw nuts? I find that a lot of veggies like kale don't taste as good raw. Maybe that's something I will get used to though.

I'm not sure. Obviously raw is better I guess but maybe while you are in transition the best option is the one that keeps you from blowing it totally and if that means lightly steaming some greens then perhaps that's the way for you to go.

You can always put the greens in the blender with fruit and make smoothies ~ Cathy

How is it those are your only choices? As Cathy has suggested, blend the kale and other greens in a smoothie which would certainly be better than either choice.
"Lightly" steamed is still killing the veggies. If someone "lightly steamed" a human, would they still be alive? Life begets life.
If you're choosing nuts, at least soak them. Can let them dry to regain some crunch; add soaked fruit and make something just a lil bit better... ummm, why a "large" amount of nuts?
I guess I'm just confused about the choices here.

Slightly away from the thread but I don't have Alissa's book yet ... why is it better to soak nuts than just eat them as they are?

Easier to digest is the short answer.

Marinating the kale (olive oil, lemon juice or raw apple cider vinegar, spices) may help you enjoy them. Or just choose different greens. If you experiment with recipes, spices, marinades, etc., you should be able to find tasty raw alternatives to cooked. I use to not be a big fan of vegetables unless it was smothered in lots of flavor or very cooked. Now I love veggies, more so than even fruit.

many people struggle with the 100% thing. many struggle with the "too much fat" thing. many struggle with "i ate too many nuts" thing.
i know this is a raw board. i am raw. i love raw.
but, what are your thoughts? this is something i wrestle with:
when one of us finds ourself at the crossroad of i'm craving something. maybe not sure what. which is 'better'? which would you choose and why between healthy cooked vegetarian and a less 'healthy' (i don't know maybe more quantity or fattening) raw?
the terms in quotes are that way because they are for lack of a better word. i look forward to your answers!

Raw is always the better & healthier choice. As far as I'm concerned, there is no such thing as an unhealthy raw meal. As a whole diet, raw just like anything can be done incorrectly. The way to deal with cravings is to always have tons of food on hand, including some prepared foods (whether you make it yourself or buy it prepackaged). There's always a raw alternative for every craving.

Since you're asking opinions...I haven't been at that crossroad yet, so I can imgine that say for me, I think i would choose the steamed veggies over a lb. of nuts! But again, thats just me and my opinion and I'm only talking about veggies and nuts! Too many nuts clog up my system, make me feel heavy..gross..:( but steamed veggies are lighter for me and I really can't see how steamed veggies are harder to digest than nuts (even if they are soaked) Yes, they're not as enzyme rich, but they still have fiber, vitamins and minerals.
Kale has a strong taste for some people. My husband must have lots of lime squeezed on and it must be cut up into really small pieces for him to eat it... But if I do that, he thinks it's great.
Your taste buds will change, I promise. The longer you are raw, the more you can appreciate the taste of raw food. The more you cook it, the more you start to need it cooked.
I would have lots of nuts over steamed veggies any day, and especially if I was craving nuts, but I'm sure you have many more options than that!
Why not make some tasty desserts and defy by having them for breakfast or lunch when you want? Think outside of the box, play with your food, it will all come into place. :)

I agree with EvaRb, your tastebuds do change. Try marinating kale, it is out of this world! Add some tomato, avocado & onion and you are in heaven!

I think kiropa worded the question better than I did. That's what I was asking. I know there are more than 2 food choices lol. When I get cravings sometimes it seems that raw vegetables or fruit aren't satisfying to me. I could eat a large amount of higher fat items like nuts/seeds/avocados and feel full, but I question if an equally satisfying lower calorie/fat cooked meal would be healthier while transitioning? I would feel like I overate if I had a pound of nuts, but not if I had a large bowl of steamed veggies that I don't particularly like raw. For me, cooked food doesn't make me want more cooked food, but high fat or high sugar foods do usually make me crave more fat/sugar.
The marinating idea sounds great though. I am allergic to tomatoes. What is a good recipe?

After experiencing false hunger as part of detoxing, fruits and vegetables will be very satisfying. But if you keep including dead nutrients in your diet, you'll keep perpetuating that black-hole hunger.
