Hi River Girl
I'm from Iowa and I was afraid I was the only one in the midwest that had an interest in raw food.
Kinda tough being from steak country!! Do you know any raw food rests in Ne or Ia? I'm pretty new to this so I really don't have any idea if there is.
Not alot of info around either, although, I did find that Whole Foods offers a class/support gp for raw eaters. It's a start.
Thanks alot

I say were from the RAW CORN CAPITAL OF THE WORLD!
I'm new too..July or august this year..I'm not 100% raw but love learning about it and grow more and more everyday. I'm thinking about taking the October challenge. I want to really be ready...if I do.

Hi River Mom
The
Whole Foods in Omaha has that raw food class. There's one this Sat from 1-2:30pm. Its $10.00 per person. The lady giving it is 70% raw, I figure she can give some pointers and it also is a support group. I've never been so I don't know any thing else about it. I'm gonna try and check it out, so if you're close to the area maybe you can too! I'm actually in Council Bluffs now but origianlly from Omaha.
I've been reading this forum for awhile now, but just started to make the change. I had one bad meal Mon-all raw yesterday(except for my coffee-thats gonna kill me that's where the "meancat" comes in!! lol) and I've lost 6 lbs! Maybe its just water weight but I don't care.
Take care

70% raw??? After just 2 months on this site, I feel like I could teach her. You are really tempting me with the class on Saturday. I am with in driving distance from Omaha but there is a Husker game that day and...well if your from Omaha I need not say anything else.
Bummer, Larasrosiegirl you are just tooooo far away, but if you get over to this side of the state I'm really up for a raw dinner!! That would be "blow my mind" fun.. I thought this was just "my little thing" but to have others around...woohooo.. I would love it!!

I have some good friends in Omaha so I'll take you up on the yummy eats if I get to town :)
I have actually driven to Minneapolis to eat at Ecopolitan Restaurant (all raw!). Huge menu and uncooking classes. Quite a hike, though.
I think we play the Huskers this weekend...Go Cyclones!!

There you go! Not going to the game, no. Would be a hoot though, you're right! It would be nice to be around other people that care about fresh raw meals. There are certainly alot of vegetarians and some vegans here but haven't met any raw foodies...trying to flush them out with my idea for the potluck (ad in the health food store paper).

Let me chime in wit the midwesterners. We lived in Omah for 18 years, moved to Columbia, MO in 2000 for my job. We sill have 3 of our 7 children and several grandchildren living in Omaha, so we get up there regularly. I didn't know about the RAW class at Whole Foods. The next time I'm up there (mid Oct.), I'll call to see what's going on.
Manwhile, welcome, RiverGirl! This is a great place to be!:D

Hi River Mom!!
I know I thought 70% was kinda low too! But, I'll take some pointers on recipes or procedures though.
Yep forgot about the huskers playing--understand!!
LRG --good luck on your potluck dinner. I hope you have a good turnout. Maybe we can set up up a potluck for everyone in our area and make it centrally located so it would be easy for everyone! Would love to meet other people into the "raw".

Yep, I'm all ready planning what I'm going to bring, I just love all my raw food so much I can't decide.:p
I'll be waiting to hear all about what you learn Saturday. Could you post if they have it again, I never know if it will work out till about the day of. I'm about 2 hours away so it's EASY for me to buzzzz down. (20 mins North of South Sioux, Twards the Ponca area. Have you ever been here?)
This energizes me!

Hi RM
I'll let you know what I learn Sat and find out when the next one is. I think they have them once a month. I checked and so far they have a whopping 3 people signed up for it. I was hoping to meet a few more rawbies in the area, maybe there will be more by sat.
And yes, I am familiar with the area. Been to Ponca St Park a couple of times. Beautiful area.
How are the people around you accepting the idea of your eating raw? Has it been a pain in the butt explaining why? Just curious, I'm only starting to have to explain it. Most are understanding but you know--there's always a few that wanna rain on your parade!
Have a good!!

Ya Ponca is beautiful, I'm glad you've been, so many in this area have not...:(
No one outside of my family knows or probably will ever know. I have ALWAYS BEEN a very healthy eater so no one even questions it at work or anywhere I go. The only thing I really took out of my diet was BREAD but I bring the wheat crackers (Alissa's recipe) and things just seem normal.
My family is into it as long as I'm preparing LOTS of food. Which is hard. It took me days to make the pizza we at for supper tonight in 15 mins. (It was soooo good worth it)
We are not 100% raw..I don't want any stress if there is not food available and we choose to eat something else. Maybe some day maybe not. Either way I am really excited about the things I'm are learning from RFT.
My kitchen if being filled with really wonderful things like Agave, cacao nibs, cacao powder, the soy sauce stuff. I'd never heard of this stuff 6 months ago.
Sorry about the rainers on your parade. Why do you feel like you have to explain?

Hi RM
I guess the hard part is after you've had such bad eating habits and so much of your family and social time is wrapped around those eating habits, the people around you feel like you're not part of them (hard to explain) if your not indulging in the same things you used to together. Also, in my family, everyone cooks--and we cook alot of meat, potatoes, gravies, pasta, stews, breads etc. so when you tell them you are not going to eat their food, they tend to take it personally. Praising their meals is a direct line to their egos.
But I'm not sweatin' too much--I've "rebelled" before!
Yesterday was my 3rd day almost 100% raw (tue i had coffee w/creamer)
and I've lost 6lbs! Maybe its just waterweight but I don't care--I'll lose 90lbs of waterweight as long as I lose it!
take care--

You start looken 10-20 years younger thats when people will take notice. I think some times people are Jeleous of the success of others. You just have to love them for where they are in their life. Pray for them, but those are not the kind of people I would want to hang out with. Maybe that's why I don't have that many real friends. I want people to love me for me and be happy and supportive in what ever I choose. That's my Family, and it pretty well stops there.
I do understand, completely
I send you my love and support,

Yeah I know what you mean. I'm not sweatin' it too much though, I have a good attitude about it and have always done my own thing anyway.
My boyfriend that I live with is on board so that's half the battle! I just keep myself out of the eating situations for right now and I won't have worry about it!

WELCOME to what is now our
TRI STATE raw group!!
How fun is this...Iowa nebraska and south dakota. You all live in places I'm been on several occasions. Well now we just have to get together. Is going to Omaha an option for you? I'm waiting to hear from MC how the cooking day went yesterday. She said she would give me a full report and a schedule of when the other classes are. That might be our best bet to start there to get together. I just moved into a little cabin on the Missouri River. (From a huge farm and huge farm house, what a change) It's very small and under construction, or I'd have us all here. Anyway WELCOME to the thread!!!

Hi RM
Its been a busy weekend!
Well the class went okay-there was 4 of us total-me, db and 2 others..woohoo
The lady that taught the class was pretty knowlegable and her eating raw raw 70% stems mainly from the fact she has kids and a dh that don't eat raw, and I think she eats some bottle dressings, maple syrup and stuff like that.
She also emphasized that some people just aren't going to be 100% raw and not to beat yourself up over it. She did make some AWESOME "granola" in the dehydrator. Looked pretty easy too! If you want the recipe, let me know.
The people in the class have been eating raw for a while so they were pretty up on everything too. It was nice to get some more input.
I will probably go to the next too--its Oct 27 1pm if you're interested.
But, I must confess :( I had a bad day yesterday :(
I was doing so well, my first week of being completely raw and I blew it last night--took my db kids out because it was the daughters bday and could not make myself eat a salad. I let myself get too hungry and the food and the smells were just too much. I ate a stupid cheesesteak sand and if that wasn't bad enough, I ate fast food tacos later! :mad
This after I survived my brother in laws house Sat with a huge dinner and beer --and I didn't cave at all--thought I was in controll--guess not.
Well, I'm eating raw today but I'm still having hunger pangs.
Sorry, just venting. I think I need to start my own blog or journal.
Anyway, hope you had a good weekend and all's well. Oh and how cool is it that you actually live in a cabin by the river!? I'll bet you love it!
And Pat--welcome to our site and like RM says we'll have to get together some time!!

YES!!! I WANT THAT RECIPE, I'm going to put the 27 @1:00 on my calendar but the truth is I won't know till the 27 @ 10:00 if I'm going. I keep very flexible on the weekends cuz I want to do what every my family is doing.
Now what is db? I'm not a texter so I get lost in the letters. I got it that dh is husband. Anyway the day sounds like it was fun. Good for you.
I'm doing the October challenge...Today was a breeze...I had lots of food prepared, who can't eat raw with a double batch of supercandy in the fridge!!!
Vent away...that's what were here for...sorry about the fast food. I would not eat that even if I was not eating raw...but todays a new day:)
Glad to here from you... I've been checking the site every 2 hours all weekend.. CAN YOU SAY OBSESSION!!
Pat, let's find a place to meet and just try to make it happen....

Hi RM
Hey good for you on your Oct challenge! I would like to do one but would like to be 100% ready and I don't think I'm there yet. Have you started a journal for yourself yet? I think I'm going to just so I can keep track of the food I'm eating and my setbacks.
Hopefully you can make the class on the 27th but if not, I will be your eyes and ears for you:D
I will try to email you that recipe because the attachment is large to put it here. Let me know if you get it okay?
RiverMom-- I admire your willpower, sounds you've been eating pretty good to begin with--keep it up.
Oh and a db is "darned boyfriend" --sometimes I use a different adj. :D

Okay just discovered that I can't email you so here's the recipe:
Cranberry maple granola
1 apple cored/copped
1 1/2 c date paste
1/2 c maple syrup or agave nectar
2 tblsp lemon juice
2 tblsp orange zest
1 tblsp vanilla extract
2 tsp sea salt
1/2 c sunflower seeds soaked 2 hours or more
2 c almonds soak 4 or more hours
3 c pecans soaked 2 or more
C c pumpkin seeds soaked 2 or more
1 c dried cranberries
cinnamon (she didn't put how much)
In a food processor, place apple, date paste, syrup, lemon juice, orange zest, vanilla, cinnamon, salt and 1/4 c sunfl seeds and grind until completely smooth. transfer to large bowl.
Add remaining 1/4 c sunfl seeds, almonds, pecan and pump seeds to the food processor-Coarsely chop the nuts and seeds in a few quick pulses. Add them to the bowl of apple mixture, add the cranberries and combine well.
Spread the granola on Teflex-lined dehydrator trays and dehydrate at 115 degrees for 6 to 8 hours. Flip the granola over and peel away the teflex. Continue to dehydrate for another 8 to 12 hours or until the granola is crunchy. Break into pieces and store in an airtight container. Keeps up to three or four weeks.
I believe she said this comes out of the book: RAW FOOD REAL WORLD
I'm hoping to get a dehydrator this week so I can make this. It was totally awesome! If you make it let me know how it turns out for you.

However, I'm going to Alissa's November class in Maine and hopefully that will give me the tools to go 100 percent. I'm so excited!!! We all should definitely set up a raw potluck in the area. River Girl, there's a raw food store in Omaha??!! I'm only familiar with Wild Oats and Whole Foods. We'll be in Omaha on Saturday actually. I'll have to talk to dh about the class that was mentioned at Whole Foods. Anyone have a link to specifics, like signing up? Or can one just show up? We're supposed to go to the zoo but perhaps we'll drop by.
Edited to add: I just noticed that the post was from Sept. The next class will be Oct. 27th and we'll definately try to make that.

Hey guys--
I don't know how many people were talking about on meetup.com in this area, but depending on the size of the group, I could host it at my union hall.
Its a pretty nice hall with a kitchen and seating for about 50 max (not sure on that though) or as few as just us--as long as I reserve it in advance and its available--no problem. Free.
Its located downtown and is close to the interstate and easy to find.
The only issue is that we're closing in on the holidays and lots of members use it for family and parties--so its hard to get a date during this time frame---but I can always check!

Its the long lost meancat--
RM--I didn't make it to Whole Foods last Sat -had a few things come up, hopefully I'll make it to the next one. By the way, did any one else from our area make it?
Well RM, I probably should have checked our union calendar before I opened my big mouth and volunteered our hall. There's not an opening until after the 1st of the year. They were also doing some improvements to it so that cut down on available rental days. But after that I'll be more that happy to host a pot luck. That is if evertone is still interested!
How's everyone doing lately? I haven't been on the website for awhile. I have too much going on and it has taken me away from raw foods. :(
