i bought goji berries from Whole Foods- are they raw if they have sugar on them? unbeknownst to me - i didnt know that sugar there was on them and I believe it's white sugar at that! they are good and chewy however I am disappointed.

Putting sugar on something doesn't may it raw or not. Look at the ingredients and it will say "raw" goji or not I would imagine.

I'm looking at my bag right now that I got from Alissa's store. The ingredients say:

Organically cultivated and harvested Goji Berries.

No added sugar here. There is some naturally occurring sugar (fructose), but that's nothing like the sugar they fill all those processed foods with.

If your ingredients read Goji Berries & nothing else . . . you should be good.

You can get raw goji berries on Alissa's site. Then, no worries!;)

Mine don't have sugar on them...My bag says "Certified free of yeast/mold, pesticide, bacteria, microbial, sulfite"

It also says, "USDA Organic, Wild Crafted" & not processed or artificially sweetened"

I ordered them off of a website, though, but they are great..I hope that helps some when looking for them in the store.

I bought my first bag of goji berries at Wholefoods last week. On the back of the bag it said 'raw'. Their dried and hard, still chewable, once you soak them for a little while they become exactly like a berry...I think I prefer them right out of the bag though as a simple munchy.

I bought a bag from wild oats and the ingredients just say goji berries...they are dried, but it doesn't say how they were dried. I have been soaking them and throwing them in smoothies. I do think when they run out I will order from Alissa.

Hi Crawmommy, I actually bought the same goji berries that you did a few weeks ago. I hated them, i'm used to buying the dried kind with nothing added so I returned them and got the normal kind. I got something different because I didn't want too many to carry around, just some to munch on at work.

do that taste better if you rehydrate them?
or are they an acquired taste?

I don't like to eat mine dried and by themselves...I think it must be an aquired taste. So far, I soak them overnight in a little bit of water and pour them and the soak water into my morning smoothie.

I chew up some dried goji berries with some cacao nibs. Right tasty. :)

I definitely think they are an acquired taste. What I do is just pop a handful in my smoothies, but not so much that I taste them - lol.
I hope they really are grown organically in good conditions, though!

I've never seen goji berries in packages before! I always go down the bulk aisle in Whole Foods & get them from the bulk bins. They're just plain goji berries, nothing added. If WF is out, I can also get them at a local herb shop; they never have anything on them. I know they're supposed to be a "super food", but I just eat them 'cause I like them. My kids like them, too, though they say they remind them of raisins with less sweet! :D
