Hi everyone!
Has anyone seen or bought or heard anyone say they've seen a Durian anywhere near DC/MD/Va? I really want to try one, and I'm having trouble locating one.
Thanks!
Abby

I tried Chinatown in DC with no luck, and I'm not sure of the locations of any Asian markets in MD and VA

Greetings Anabbytree
Check out::
Han ah Reum Asian Mart
800 N. Rolling Rd.
Catonsville, MD 21228
443-612-9020
Every time that I have been in this particular Han ah Reum grocery store there have been durians for sale..
Han ah Reum is a Korean owned asian grocery chain with, I believe, 3-4 stores in Maryland??..
Their other store that I know about for sure is located::
Han ah Reum Asian Mart
12015 Georgia Avenue
Wheaton, MD 20902
301-942-5071
I don't know how sucessfull calling them will be as finding someone in the store who speaks fluent English to answer a question has been near impossible the two times that I have tried..
Good Luck!!

I knew if I looked in enough cookbooks I would find the info!!
The info was in The Sushi Experience by Hiroko Shimbo..
There are at least 2 Han ah Reum Asian Marts in Virginia..From several asian friends thar shop at these places more often I do, Han ah Reum is a rapidly expanding grocery chain..It is possible that there are additional stores in MD or VA than I have listed..Googling may be necessary..
Good Luck!!

I'll be iterested in the answer, too. I've looke everywhere I've travelled in the midwest. We have a child and her family in Herndon, so I'll be happy to know if you find a durian in that area!

Hi there! I am new to this board (today is my first day) and I saw this post and had to reply with some updated information. Just FYI--Hahn ah Reum has been changed (in Virginia) to "Super H Mart". They are still located in those two locations (Falls Church/Merrifield and Fairfax). They are actually nicer now. I have seen Durian at both of them. The fairfax store has a discount card; the falls church/merrified store will print coupons at the bottom of your receipt for "happy hour" specials (2pm-6pm) and sometimes it is for incredibly inexpensive produce (like a 10 pound bag of onions for one dollar). I like the fairfax store better--it is larger and cleaner.
Naniwa no longer carries produce; I was there last week and I did not see any produce at all or if it was there I could not find it. They have downsized and they still only take cash. They have fresh seaweed and lots of dried seaweed and the owner is very very helpful.

See if you can obtain a copy of The Sushi Experience from your local library..
Ms. Shimbo has a fairly extensive listing of asian grocery stores compiled state-by-state in the bibliography, which may get you started looking in the right direction..

Just FYI--today at Super H Mart in Fairfax (formerly known as Hahn ah Reum) they had Durian for 1.49/pound. They had quite a few, actually. When I was shopping, I looked for them.

This might be a little late, but I just bought some durian at the Grand Mart in Annandale, Virginia. When I went to look up their address, I found out that they just opened a Grant Mart in Centreville too.
Here's the website with a bunch of other Virginia locations too:
