It's been 2 days and...nothing? No sprouts!:(

Has anyone made Alissa's chili with something else besides barley?
Or can you eat barley soaked & not sprouted? HELP!!!

It should have sprouted by now. Is it pearled barely? If so, that won't sprout (it's not raw, it's been processed). You could actually make the chili without the barley at all...I just did that recently and had it topped with onion dip and it was great!

I think the barley is moreso there for texture...it kinda tastes like having "meat" or "rice" in the chili...but it's awesome with or without it IMHO.

Same here! I used my buckwheat sprouts instead that I had going for a bread I was going to make but I was craving Chili desperately today after my run that I made it with the buckwheat. tasted really good actually. Also my corn was fresh before I froze it and it gave it a really juicy pop with every bite! How NE?

I'm not sure what kind it was, we bought it at whole foods in the bins. (?)
Now I'm curious...
I think we'll head back to see if they have the right kind...guessing it was pearl we used???

Thanks Rawkinlocs!!!
PS. That chili recipe is so good!

Yeah, either it was pearled or it had been steamed or otherwise heat-treated. If you do go back, just ask them about it and tell them you want raw barley that has not been heat-treated and see if they have any...they should.

Hi Freebird,
That sounds like a good alternative!!!
I know I can spout buckwheat...easy peasy.

PS. Leave for NE tomorrow!

Rawkinlocs, I know most barley ( pot barley and pearl barley ) is raw, the polishing is normally mechanical. (the pearl gets more polishings)

However, is the pot barley still sproutable, or do I need some difficult to obtain "groat" or something. Do you just get your barley at a regular store?

I've never tried sprouting barley and would love to get in on another food.

I've just been doing chili with a chili-like base, and cut up avo, red pepper, spring onion, etc.

Hi Exurb,

I'm not sure...I've never heard of pot barley before. I get mine, in bulk, from the food co-op or natural foods store.

All I know is, it should look something like this:

THANKS rawkinlocs for posting that picture!

So that is a groat. Back to the HFS! (BTW the pot barley pretty much looks like the pearled barley only rougher and more irregular, less polishing, but that outer hull is polished away).

Do the hulls just sort of rinse away after sprouting?
