Last night (while staying at my son's new home and what kid wants his mom to act like this)
I got the worst leg cramps I can imagine over and over. I had to get out of bed and walk and scream in pain. I was laughing and crying at once cuz I was so embarrassed to be making such a bazar display, but it was just out of control. I have NEVER had anything even close this before. Does anyone know what was up with that???? Does it have to do with food? I had a co-worker that told me she had this once and I did not pay much attention...(did not understand) Now I really want to help her too.

Potassium.... need potassium... eat a banana or two or three http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s43/FireStar_830/th357582627l0ng1ru-11.gif!!!
When my body needs potassium my eye will start twitching http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s43/FireStar_830/1ptgno.gif - or some part of my face or I will get leg cramps - charlie horse kind... really painful!!
Its also really important to get exercise. Your body is detoxing toxins and lactid acid can build up in your muscles and cause cramps too. Exercise helps to move the toxins out of your body.
hope youre feeling better!!

I have been having cramps, tingling and numbness in my legs and hands that wake me up all night long. I don't like plain bananas, but I will DEFINITELY start putting one in my smoothies everyday. Thanks again for the advice...:p

Thanks for the insight,
I have eaten more bananas this month than ever in my live. Maybe down on water cuz was very busy all day.
had been moving son into apt on second floor, lots and lots of steps.
I googled lacitd acid... don't know much more that i did before.
I definately ate 3 BANANAS tonight and have one in the freezer for before I go to bed:)
Walnutty, I'm sorry for you, and anyone who has this I PRAY you get rid of these symptoms FAST!!
StarFire..I love your dancing banana..you always bless me in a way that makes me smile.

My cross country coach would talk about lactic acid buildup and how to prevent it... I guess when you exercise, it is good for that to build up some because it means you're working hard, but there is a sort of threshold where it can be too much so it gets clogged up in a muscle.
You can prevent them by: drinking lots of water, stretching well and appropriately (after warm up, after cool down), and eating a piece of fruit immediately after working out.
Not sure if he was correct, but he actually did have a chemistry degree and was a science teacher. I could also remember incorrectly!
And maybe it's not even related to your situation, but here's some other food for thought... When you run and also when you eat raw food, your body gets rid of toxic waste buildup in your body. It's supposed to get OUT through your bowel movements, but if you're not taking in enough fiber (which could need to be a ton), then other problems happen. A lot can be fixed just by drinking enough water and having enough juice and green smoothies to keep those bad boys on the move (out).
Hope that made sense. Hope you're doing okay by now! :)
I totally missed when I wrote that that you had mentioned moving your son and all the steps. It all makes sense. I think my cross country coach was right on target!
I think your best bet would be:
1. Drink lots of water.
2. Keep it up with those green smoothies.
3. If possible, either a/ go for a brisk walk or b/ go to a sauna! and then stretch really well.

walnutty,
That happened to me but not exactly the same way. A few weeks after going raw I got some slight tingling in one hand and also in one foot. I just attributed it to detox and it went away the next day.
Also prior to raw I was getting really bad tingling in both feet and I was so freaked I had diabetes so went to the doctor to get checked out and she said I was fine. I was doing a lot of praying because I was scared.
Well I figured out what caused it. A friend of mine had sold me this desk and it was built by his dad and made for a man so it wasn't the right proportion for my body. I was low down looking up at my computer all the time. Every day I was in it and my neck would always hurt. My sister realized that this was causing the tingling feet (we both used to work for a doctor, not that we can give medical advice at all but we sometimes try and figure things out that's all). So I stopped using this desk and my tingles went away.
I'm not saying that's your problem but could it be detox symptoms. Still trying to learn more about detox myself and hope you get relief soon.

I seriously known the pain that comes from those stinking cramps:eek:
Along with what StarFire said, you'll also need to up your dark green leafy veggies for magnisuim and vitamin k,( like kale leaves), my buddy Michigan Roman told me about this and it's helped alot. also you can use organic cayenne pepper which is great for getting circulation moving around in your system along with organic yohimbe,( but take very small grams of this - it's so very strong, - it will also helps in the circulation for you.:)

Just start looking up herbs that increase blood circulation,
they are a couple out there. Some of them claim a certain thing, but they also help in the bodies circulation of blood. like Organic maca,

http://www.qni.com/~gic/herb/yohimbe.htm
http://www.shirleys-wellness-cafe.com/cayenne.htm
Niacin, if you get a 500 mg of this I highly recommend only taking 1/4 of the tablet - for it will light you up, all your capillairs will flow with blood, you’ll feel like your getting an instant sunburn from the inside out - just be calm and stay relaxed after about an 45 minutes your system will return to normal and the rush sensation will subside. But you'll have all your blood flow to places that have caused you cramps, and that's what your trying to accomplish. I had a cramp in my left thigh to the point where it hurt so bad I could only hobble around until it finally released. Well I had gone for a couple of days with out any dark leafy greens.
Now some people's bodies will not experience these cramps, but others will because their bodies use up certain vitamins more rapidly.
Also it helps if you do some type of regular cardio workout to help maintain healthy circualtion,. Where as being lathargic and doing nothings just makes it worse.

ouuuuuuch
this happened once a few months into raw
I fell onto the ground is shrill screams and sobs as my foot spasmed uncontrollably for what seemed like forever (probably on and off for 10 minutes)
i have NEVER experienced anything like that before
tres bizarre
daily green juice
lots of water, esp with lemon & a pinch salt
raw chocolate
keeps me good
i think it's more Magnesium, Sodium, and WATER
than potassium

magnesium, calcium and potassium act in harmony, if you are off in any one then you will experience cramping-though it's more likely magnesium than anything.
Leafy greens, nuts and cacao are the best sources of magnesium...though if you are that deficient you could try herbs (red raspberry leaf or nettles) or a very natural supplement like NaturalCalm.
Mushrooms and strawberries are actually far higher in potassium than bananas...if that's the issue you may want to look at better sources?

I know you just feel out of control..
Funny about the salt, that's what my husband told me I needed, he'll love it today for someone agreeing with him:)
Thanks for the info... All is well with me now I'm out to help others.

My naturopathy lecturer said that this is a calcium deficiency and to take calcium supplements (if you choose to supplement, as opposed to change your diet) right before you go to bed.

Since you said you were going up and down the stairs a lot, I'm inclined to think it is just overworked muscles. But I could be wrong!

I had been having the pain, tingling and numbness for a few weeks. Last night I slept through the night without those symptoms waking me up. The only thing I did yesterday was throw one organic banana into my green smoothie. I eat tons of greens in a day...as much as 1 pound. I also add 8-10 oz. of frozen organic strawberries into my daily green smoothie. It's hard to believe that that one organic banana made such a difference, but it did. Soooo, today I even got one down all by itself!

I have heard that cramps are caused by a sodium / potassium balance that is out of wack. At the cellular level it is called the sodium - potassium pump and it moves fluids in and out of the cells. To avoid cramps get some sodium and some potassium in your diet. Good sources of natural potassium are bananas and young coconut. The best source of natural sodium is celery.
