Once upon a time, I actually used carrot tops in soup (that was over 10yrs ago). Then I heard they were toxic, so stopped using them (even though they tasted good to me!).

I just read Green for Life, and lo and behold, the Boutenkos use carrot tops as greens in their green smoothies.

I was wondering if anyone on this board does the same. I wouldn't hesitate to try them, except that I discovered that I react to the oxalic acid in spinach and chard if I put more than a small handful of them in my gs. I like to use the equivalent of 1/2 bunch kale per 2 bananas, but if I do so w/spinach and chard I feel sick afterward for 2-3 hrs. I'm paranoid the same thing might happen w/carrot tops.

What has your experience been with carrot tops, if any? TIA.:)

Well, since I have no problem with baby spinach, chard or any other green, maybe my experience doesn't matter. How about starting with one lil stalk and see what happens. It's your body, yah?

I've used carrot tops in smoothies, they're really stong, so use a small amount when you first put them in :)

Victoria's DVD goes even further then her Green for Life book and she has actual number comparisons on the benefits of the green tops compared to the roots that we are so used to eating. The tops far out number the roots as far as nutrition.
I agree with Revvell - start out with a little, you can always add more.

Yeah, that's what I think I'm going to do, thanks. I've always felt like I was wasting them, just throwing them in the compost. If I don't like 'em, there's always other greens. ;)

So now I'm wondering if you grow carrots and harvest just the tops, will the tops grow back and with as much nutrition as the first bunch? Hmm...

She actually uses them? I thought that was only a rhetorical device in the book, comparing them to the carrots themselves.

I use those and beet tops all the time. I really find that my BMs are um full when I use that stuff instead of just spinach or chard. :D
