Raw restaurants in LA?

I have a friend who is visiting LA next week and I wanted to give him some tips on restaurants to check out. I am going to tell him about Rawvolution for sure because I have had "the box" and know his food is great!

Depends on you and your tastes. I'm not fond of most food at the raw restaurants. I enjoyed most of what I had at Au Lac, LOVED what I had at Cru (and when it was Jade); disliked most of Leaf, except for the desserts; disliked much of Terra Bella ~ LOVED the salad I'd had, much of breakfast and her desserts are awesome; fell asleep (not a good sign) before reaching the fwy. after eating at Juliano's; purchased The Box from Rawvolution and loved almost everything in it, prompting me to purchase the book and loving the recipes there...

It's all about your taste and yes, most of them are fairly expensive in my opinion. Again, depends on what you're use to. I'm use to purchasing from farmers' markets and making my own. When I look at a wrap for $8 I start thinking what I could have purchased for that... Like a 20# bag of oranges.

I would have to say, besides Cru, the best food I've eaten at a raw restaurant was Roxanne's in Marin (N. Cal.) Their main dishes were divine. Oh! And when I went to a place up north aways, I asked if the chef could accommodate me. He knew Charlie Trotter when he was working on the book with Roxanne but hadn't had a chance to explore raw. Two out of 3 days his main dishes were simple, yet filling and tasty.

I can see what you are saying about the prices. $16.95 is pretty pricey for a bowl of soup. I guess you do that when it is a special occasion.

Au Lac is pricey, but everything is family style. So... for example my bf and I will split a *small* raw soup from au lac for $9 and a dish for $19 and still have leftovers for the next day. (Plus, we both eat a lot!). So, its not a bad deal for the amount of food actually. But initially it looks really expensive until you've seen the portions.

The food is *amazing!* Chef Ito is a master and his dishes are always a work of art. You can literally taste the love in the food.

I highly recommend the Humanese soup, the Curry rice entree, the Nori wrap, and any of the desserts. I also love the risotto and the raw taco. However, I haven't ever had anything on the menu that I didn't like. Everything on there is great, it just depends on what you feel like having that night. :) And I *always* get a dessert.

I was in the Southern Cali area this weekend and made it to a few raw places.

I dont have great words to say about most so I will only highlight the best which is Au Lac. Oh My, I could have kiss the cook. The food was great in taste and portion. I ate one dish for lunch, dinner, and breakfast. Now there are three things i love about Orange County: Disneyland, South Coast Plaza Mall, and Au Lac.
