I am forwarding this from archives as I could not bump up. I have added some new info that is compelling!_______________________________________ __________________________

Hi!:D

I decided not to put this in the "Raising Raw kids" area as those who don't yet have kids may never look there. But I just wanted to point out that the younger you start your child raw the easier it is.

This is my son making Alissas mudslide. He just loves to help with the uncooking especially putting items in the VitaMix!

He has been raw since he started eating solid foods - along with breastmilk!

My five year old is also raw and while it has not been as easy it still hasnt been that difficult.

All the best everyone!

9/18/2007 UPDATE: Please please have a read:

I needed to bump this up because of some amazing NEW information I read about in V. Boutenkos recently revised book 12 steps to Raw Foods,
and I quote from her book:

"I used to think that humans could form their eating patterns throughtout their entire lifetime.

In my research I came upon studies about childhood imprinting.

I was amazed to learn that flavors in mothers milk begin to shape a babies later food preferences.

However, the most powerful imprint about food preferences for life that humans recieve comes at the specific time of being weaned off mother's milk.

This sensitive time is called the "sensitive periodor "critical period" and lasts for two to three months during which a profoundly strong imprint is formed in every childs mind based on what the child is eating, along with watching the dining process of others around them, especially their mother.

This imprint is practically irreversible: " A critical period . . . is very short in duration, and the effects of apecific events durinbg this period are . . . life-long, and reletivly immune to erasure by subsequent events."

That is how food prederences are shaped to make us vegetarrians, meat-and-potato-persons, or any other kind of eater.

We can become normal or compulsive eaters based on the variety of food we are exposed to during our sensitve periods.

I find it fascinating that a short period of 60 - 90 days shapes eating habits for one's entire life. . ." :eek: :rolleyes:

I want to compare my kids in relation to this information. My kids are now 3 & 7 and raw. My eldest was raised Macrobiotic - lots of cooked grains - for her first two years and my son has been RAW from birth.

When faced with a bowl of buttered popcorn my daughter will loard over the bowl eating with frightening spead. My son will go put some in a bag but that bag will still be full the next day.

Give my daughter one cookie and she wants the whole bag with a scary desparation and my son will hold the biscuit in his hand untouched for the whole day!

Hmmm, interesting!

Cheers,

EPPP

...and THAT is why I say many many diseases aren't truly genetic. There MAY be a disposition, but just take a look. A grandmother gets breast cancer, the mom gets breast cancer, then the daughter gets breast cancer. People would say it's genetic, right? Just take a look at their diets! The grandmother fed the mother what she ate and down the line. They are taught to eat a certain way and unless they make a significant change in lifestyle, then yea, they may end up with cancer as well. Not sure if that came out of my head like I wanted it to haha....

It's also about the nutritional stores that were handed down...you are what your GRANDMOTHER ate...until you do better.

Your kids are beautiful you lucky mom!

I'm going to be the voice of dissention, though. I have my BS in Bio so I still retain some of my schooling. I'm not sure I agree with that imprinting thing. Humans are not animals of instinct like our dogs other creatures that lurk outside. An animal only has its instinct and imprinting like this occurs in nature all the time. I am NOT saying we're above animals, but we do have different brains and abilities. Also, no one in my family eats close to the way I do. It's funny to picture my parents sitting around feasting on vegetables like I always have. Also, I used to eat meat when I was younger. As I got older, I grew out of it. I should also mention my son could live on cow parts, no problem. I never ate like that!

Sorry, I don't want to cause a debate although it looks like I threw the first punch. I just feel very differently is all :)

Heavenly Apple Pie in a Bowl

OK, this is soooooo good!

I've made raw apple pie with a crust, but I find the following recipe more tasty, with a more satisfying texture, and it's so easy! Takes 10 minutes or less to throw together...just a cutting board and knife required. Looks pretty, too.

We eat this for breakfast, but it would make a great party/potluck dish in larger quantities.

Kudos and thanks to my partner, David, who made this up one morning.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
For one large serving, place all ingredients in large bowl and toss well:
1 large Granny Smith apple, diced (tart apples taste best in this recipe)
1 handful cashews
1 handful walnut pieces
1 handful raisins
Juice of 1/2 lemon
1 healthy dollop of agave nectar (maybe 2 T?)
1 heaping T almond butter (this is critical for taste and consistency)
Ample cinnamon (I just shake a lot on)
Celtic sea salt to taste (add enough to bring out the flavor)
Toss well until everything's evenly coated. Enjoy!
