Wow. All this time I have been living this "6 hour" rule. I once heard it takes the human body 6 hours to fully digest a meal, perhaps that was with cooked foods. Good to know though, thanks for the post! :D

I think the 6 hours refers to improperly combined cooked meals, like meat and potatoes, etc.

Is 'digestion' the point at which the food gets to the large intestine?

I have heard that juices digest (make it out of the stomach) in 10 to 20 minutes, fruits take about 45 min to an hour, vegetables 1 1/2 to 2 hours, and meat over 6 hours. Has anyone else heard this ?

Yes, and also melons are out of the stomach in 15-45 minutes. The chart above has them at 3+ hours. I think the term 'digestion' actually includes the intestines too. Digestion starts in the mouth and finishes in the large intestine. There is still some absorption of water and nutrients in the large intestine. I don't think the times of less than an hour are an accurate time for DIGESTION. Perhaps leaving the stomach, but not for full digestion. I believe Natalia Rose's books give times for foods leaving the stomach. I don't know how they can really give useful full digestion times because SAD people generally don't eat enough fiber and the times can vary greatly.

i go with natalia's book as well and everything she says seems to be true as far as i can tell. fruit about 30 minutes, juices 20, melons 20, meals like salads and stuff 3-ish hours. i find it takes about that long for me to be hungry again and feel like my stomach is empty
