Is it ok to just leap straight in or is it a good idea to fast for shorter periods first before trying a whole week for example?

Short periods first. Preferably start with juice fasting rather than water fasting.
Most people are unable to deal with cravings and physical sensations associated with fasting. If you actually did complete a whole week, there's a good chance you'd pig out after the fast.

Draginvry may be right about doing a shorter fast for your first one. I don't know. I would pay attention to your body while fasting and go as long as you like.

Can you guys explain for me? Is shorter fasts better physically or is that recommended based on a high failure rate with people not knowing what to expect and how to handle it? I'm confident (my body willing) that I could do a 30 day fast for the first one in terms of self discipline, but medically I’ve heard the first three days of a fast is just pushing all the recently consumed junk out of your system so it makes anything less than 7 days seem like a waste to me?
I'm new to this though, so I have no idea!
Thanks!

That is the best advice. LISTEN to YOUR body. We're all different. My dh and I jumped into a 7 day fast and did phenomenal ~ we were sad to end it. I am currently attempting a 40 day juice fast (with some minor variations ~ a smoothie in the a.m. and juice the rest of the day) because I know my body better than anybody and any book. It's no different than raw, you do what works for you :D Zaphirah just finished a 34 day juice fast. Her goal was 40 days but her body was telling her differently ~ I would recommend reading her blog about it.
