Hi y'all.
Well, it's 41° F /5° C over here in Siberia and, given the missing window(!) in my apartment, I caught a nasty head cold.
Can anyone recommend some RAW remedies that also make you feel good. I have that overall achey feeling and stuffed nose and headache.
Thanks in advance!

Sending you hugs!
Don't know answer but I think that the carrot soup might help.
It has a tendency to help cleanse the intestine also and that is where some people think colds originate.
2 cups carrot juice
1 avocado (oops can you get that in Siberia now?)
1 garlic clove
1 inch ginger
1 teasp curry
Personally I think the soup has a warming and filling effect and of course you can lightly heat it on the stove stirring constantly so it does not get too hot.

You're right--no avos over here...at least, VERY rarely. I think I'll go with your carrot juice. Maybe a total raw juice fast for a couple days is in order, huh? I don't have much of an appetite for eating anyway.
Thanks again for the recipe (and the hugs!)

I used to eat Tobouli Salad for colds, but you can make it without the tobouli.
Parsley salad.
Parsely
tomato
onion
dash of salt
lemon juice
Let sit for at least 10 minutes.
Smoothies are good too. Quick absorbtion into the system, less work for digestion so your body can focus on moving out the cold.
Keep bundled up, wear a scarf. Colds can enter the back of the neck. I know that sounds weird, but it's a chinese medicine concept.

I don't have proper equipment so I do not get to try or create but I think if you seek a filling effect perhaps a nut butter instead of avocado?
Ginger, curry and garlic are very warming.
I know you are not hungry now but when I feel the way you do I get depressed and there is an emotional attachment to filling food that helps me feel better.
Why can't the committee fix the window?

This helped me......using a neti pot once or twice a day with warm salt water.
And of course, green smoothies (try with berries and honey).

A tablespoon of apple cider vinegar mixed with a glass of water does WONDERS!! It's a bit hard to get down at first, just plug your nose and down it! It will really help! It has cut my colds in half. Also, get rid of any and all mucous you have(don't swallow it back down). That will also speed recovery time. :)

hi there,
there is also a zinc solution you can get to add to your warm salt water neti pot solution. zinc kicks pretty much everythings butt.

I like lemon and warm water sweetened with raw honey.
Garlic is great for colds, too.
Be well,

Probiotics strengthen your immune system so you rarely get sick. As soon as you feel like you might get sick or are around someone who is, a formula with echinacea, zinc, vitamin c, garlic, etc is good to have on hand to get ward off anything (you can make something of your own too). Large doses of vitamin c powder can help once you're already sick.

I started a juice fast today and already feel better. Aren't the juices even easier to digest than smoothies, since there's no fiber at all?
Back of the neck, huh? I never even thought of that. Thanks!

Hi Luckitri!
I have a standard blender. No Vitamix and none of Alissa's books. Can I make a nut butter in a standard blender? Which nuts work best? Most nuts here are imported and expensive. The cheapest nuts and seeds are peanuts, pine nuts, sunflower seeds, and pumpkin seeds. Anything I can do with those?
I REALLY miss avos, believe me.
About the window...it has been missing for a year now. No responsible "committee" here, no sirree. My landlord is a diehard, hopeless alcoholic. I've given up asking him for help. I have to tape up cardboard. There's a set of old double doors over the balcony, all full of holes. Need to blockade up the whole mess before I die of frostbite :-) Thanks for asking!

No I am sorry to say you cannot. I just about broke mine trying to do a recipe with soaked nuts and lots of liquid. Now it stresses very easily and burns. Doesn't look like I'm going to be able to get another one soon either. Some HFS have raw nut butters.
I am so curious as to what is available to you there. What the life is like there? Do they have HFSs? Raw Sauerkraut? Mom and Pop shops? Big box stores?

First, either send someone to the health-food store or get online and order yourself some dried elderberries. San Francisco Herb Company sells them CHEAP. Or if you live near the mountains, this is the time to harvest and dehydrate them yourself.
Elderberries are the BEST antiviral in the world -- and they also help with cold symptoms. To make elderberry tea, put a tablespoon of berries into a cup, pour hot water over them, and let them steep. Then drink the tea. You can also make a tincture by covering the berries with gin, whiskey, or vodka and putting them in dark place, shaking them once a day, for about 2 weeks. I just leave the berries in there and use a tablespoon in 1/2 cup of hot water to take it. If you drink elderberry tea throughout the cold season, you'll be less likely to get colds. If you drink it when you have a cold, it will cut the time you are sick into about 1/3.
Next... for nose stuffiness, get yourself a neti pot. This is a little thing that looks like a wee teapot. You put a weak saline solution in it and put the nozzle in your nose and tip it up, closing your throat (you'll learn how to do this) and letting the saline run into one nostril and out the other. Then you do the other nostril. This flushes out dust, mites, allergens, and mucous and helps dry and open the nostrils so you can breathe. The first few times you do it it burns like fire, but you get used to it and the benefit of the burning is that it causes mucous to thin and run so you can blow your nose clean.
If you don't have a neti pot, you can mix a weak saline solution and "snuff" it up your nostril from a tablespoon.
Run a hot bath, put a handful of salt into it. If you have essential oils like rosemary or eucalyptus, put a few drops in the water, and soak for about 10 minutes to raise your body temperature. Then put on some warm pajamas and get into the bed and SWEAT. Keep the covers ON. Sweating will help kill the bug that's bugging you.
Drink lots of water and eat nothing but fresh fruit.
Lastly, if you'll email me privately, I will give you my family cold tea recipe. This is a recipe that works wonders both during the cold season to keep you from getting colds, and to comfort and heal you once you have the cold. It is made from easy to get dried herbs.
I hope you feel better.

Yes, juices are easier to digest, so they're good for colds and such. Carrot juice is one of my favorites and you can add cucumber, celery, beets to make it a super drink. I also like drinking warm to hot water with lemon when I have a cold.

I wish I had time to make a book of all the things I learn on here - just for my own reference. I hope I remember what you said about elderberries RowanC when I next get the chance. Never seen 'em in the store nor in the "forest" (what they call desert out here.)
So Courtney we want to know how you are doing?
