Friends -

I have searched in vain for a good thread about eating only organic food. I'm sure there is one, but I don't have all day to search. :o

Do you long-standing rawbies eat only organic food? If a person were to eat all raw, but NOT organic, would their results be less impressive? What about how they feel? Is there a big difference in physical wellbeing, because in my area, there's a big difference in the price of organic vs. non-organic fruits and veggies. :(

Thanks in advance,
Raindeer

You will benefit from Raw either way. Organic is not required..but preferable due to the pestcides and insecticides.

I eat almost totally Organic because I have a great source at Wegmans (good prices due to volume sales) for example yesterday banana's were 49 cents and Organic were 59 so no question there. At the HFS the Organic Banana's are 1.00 a pd.

Hi,

I'm new too and I posted a thread about this - it is on page 4 currently a little less than half way down - called
"most important foods to buy organic" check it out I got some great pointers from it.

I don't buy all organic - I just do the best I can with my budget.

Good luck!

Because of financial issues, we buy what we can afford. Sometimes organic isn't too much higher in price, so we'll go with it. For the most part, though, we buy conventional. Hopefully in time we can add more and more organic, but right now - it's hard enough to feed our whole family raw because of the cost, I don't want to make it any more difficult...

We have ALL experienced such great benefits from raw, even with conventional. Just do what you can :D

Organic is generally better than conventional, but if you have to choose between conventional oranges for your juice or no oranges at all (and no juice!) i would go with the conventional

there's a good list out there of the top fruits and vegetables that absorb pesticides, so you would not want to really eat them conventionally - they include strawberries and tomatoes

I personally only buy organic, even if means not getting as much food. I'm just not comfortable eating things have been intentionally sprayed, to me organic vegetables aren't "better" but the way they are intended and supposed to be

But that's just me :) (by the way, I do this on a $20 a week budget..so if you're worried about spending too much money on organic, just think of me :D )

If I decided to only buy organic then my diet would be far more restricted. I would never be able to eat a papaya and would not often be able to eat melon.
I buy organic where there is a choice but if I can not find it in organic then I buy regular.
I have also sometimes put buying local above buying organic. I recently had a choice between organic strawberries from the U.S. or non organic local ones so I bought the local.

If buying from the store I buy organic also even if it means eating less. Buying fresh from the farmer's market I don't really worry about it too much. I do ask where the produce came from. I am reading eating for beauty by David Wolfe and it is really a great book. He talks about organic produce vs. convetional produce.

This is my personal take on it. I can't see detoxing the body with raw foods and then turning around and putting the pesticides right back in. To me, you are defeating the purpose. Some foods have more of a pesticide load than others so I would at least buy organic for the items that you eat with the skins on such as all berries, apples, thin melons and cucumbers, etc.

The best thing to do is to see if your area has an organic co-op. I didn't realize mine did (lived here for 13 years) until I searched the internet and found a great group of organic eaters. Plus it's cheaper when you buy in bulk (sometimes you can share a case with someone) and you don't pay any taxes on the food.

In my area, organic foods are plentiful, but... They can be very expensive and they're not always fresh. I do get a shipment each week of organic fruits and vegetables. The box varies from week to week but I can't always get all that I need and I must go to the store for the other things.

I find most of the time I wind up buying the regular stuff because the organic stuff either doesn't look fresh or costs 4 to 5 times what the regular stuff costs. I can usually get onions, greens and tomatoes that are organic. Peppers, usualy not. I am just not willing to pay $5 for one pepper.
