I just finished riding the MS 150 for the 5th time, tho' this was my first time RAW. ( The MS 150 is a 150 mile bike ride over 2 days wherein riders raise lots of money for Multiple Sclerosis research.) I had a great ride. The first day was relatively cool for mid-Missouri , tho' muggy. The cloud cover was nice. I averaged 13.9 mph over some very mean hills, and I felt good about that. The second day was also hilly -- more hills, actually, but less intense. The weather was beautifully sunny, with little wind, in the low 80s--really nice. I averaged 14.6 mph--not bad for a 66 y.o. g'ma for that many miles!
Typical of me, I was anxious about having good nutrition along the way. Following is the plan I worked out.
I made a blender full of Energy Soup for each day. I decanted it into 2 water bottles for the ride and drank what was left over before I left home. I drank one bottle full before lunch, and saved the other one for the afternoon. At each rest stop I filled whichever bottle I was working on with ice. I also had my Camelback, which I filled with a green drink and an electolyte replacing drink (AIM products with I like--'pretty clean stuff). Additionally, I ate bananas and oranges at the rest stops along the way. There was a big lunch stop. I stopped there with my friends, but ignored the SAD which they offered. I was quite satisfied on both days, never felt hungry or anything. It was a good plan. 'Just thought I'd share it. The soup thing in the water bottles is a good thing. (Energy Soup is from Anne Wigmore originally. Brenda Cobb has the recipe in her book. It's like a super duper Green Smoothie)

YAY !!

Jane, you BLAZE !!

Thank you so very much for posting this information..

I wanted to ask EXACTLY what a person who is doing endurance training is consuming..

i am going to go and copy your post and go over each bit of it..some of the language i do not understand.

may i ask another question:
in 'camelback'..i guess that is one of those contraptions you can fill with some kind of liquid and put on your back and have a straw where you can sip when you need hydration.

i do not want to ask any stupid questions so i am going to go back and re read your post really carefully with a fine toothed comb and my search engine handy.

i may be back to ask specific questions, but the main purpose of this post is to say :

CONGRATULATIONS... and many thanks

ok.. i have one question:
it is not a stupid one ( unusual for me)
it is:
if you took ALL THE DIFFERENT components (all the foods which you needed to prepare all the smoothies and "rest stop fruits" and hydration liquids for your two days) and made a list of them, what would the list look like ( i mean infact)

for instance: two days food prep ingredients for race days:
9 bananas, 12 oranges, 6 apples, 1 oz raw chocolate, 2 cups coconut milk,
77 almonds, water, 6 lemons,.

i guess that is a bit of a hassle..
but could you give a ball park figure along the lines of the above ( approximations)

i am sorry to give you work in this.
i would gladly go to any online or book source which might tell this kind of information..just refer and i will happily go and seek.

i have been looking ...but have not found anything with the similarities to yours which i think i might need.

thanks again !!
take care
keep up the good work.!!
You are an inspiration, for sure, for sure.!

Golly! Thanks, girls! I mostly wanted to share thnestory because during this first year RAW every event or trip turns into a food challenge and I was so happy to have worked out somethign that worked well and didn't even have to look at the available junk at the rest stops out of hunger or panic.
Regarding a list -- here is one day's worth. I did pretty much the same thing on both days
Energy Soup -- for breakfast before the ride and in my water bottles, which got diluted with ice as I went along:
1 TBS dulse (or kelp powder)
1 apple
1/2 blender full of rejuvelac (recipe in Brenda Cobb's book, but good water would work as well.)
Good handfull of greens --I used kale and Parsley I think -- doesn't matter.
1/2 c. each mung bean sprouts, lentil sprouts, buckwheat sprouts, sunflower seed sprouts
1-2 TBS. hemp protein (or spiruliana or maca)

2 water bottles filled with :
ice
2 TBS AIM Barley life (I think any good green powder will do available at hfs)
2 TBS AIM Peak Endurance --good electrolyte replacement --maybe unnecessary
I avocado
Blend it all up and add enough water so you can drink it from a bottle.

For lunch:
1 Morning Muffin, 1 Rye Bagel ( both from Alissa's book)
1 sandwich bag filled with a mixture of raw cashews, sunflower seeds, raisins, almonds.

5 Rest Stops:
1/2 each orange, banana (approximately)
replenish ice in water bottles and Camelback

That's it. Actually it was probably more than enough. I didn't eat all the nuts and seeds. I'd like to go without the Camelback also, as it's weighty, but I drink better with it on the road and the bottles were filled more with food than liquid --even though it was all liquid --if you get my meaning here.
On the road hydration is more important than nutrition, but I always , and I do mean always, wonder (worry, thaat is)about having enough nutriton along. (Funny how we always run into our selves being who we are, idosyncrasies and all! Wherever I go, there I am!)

That's it. Thanks all, again, for your support. Bepppa, I'll ride again for you next year!
