Hey there!

I've been teaching yoga for over four years now, and I get this question a ton! The best videos for beginners would be the following:

Anything from Gaiam

Sean Corne: Vinyasa Flow Yoga - This one is slow enough but includes many important key poses.

There is a t.v show called Namaste, which is filmed in Vancouver B.C. It's half hour program, and if you can forget you are watching a bunch of half naked beautiful bodied women you will see the flows are beautiful. She starts slow and has more repetition. Her style has a flavour of Viniyoga. I believe if you go to her website...katepotteryoga.com you can order the whole first and now second season. It's great for people who don't have a whole hour or two.

If you are a beginner I would say stay away from Shiva Rea....don't get me wrong I love the women and she is fantastic...but knowledge of yoga and the poses are a must....once you get the hang of it, maybe even through a series of classes you can work your way to her.

Hope this helps....if I think of more I'll post

Not a dvd, but a book: 'The Easy Yoga Workbook, A Complete Yoga Class in a Book'. It's véry good, esp. for beginners, but it's still interesting enough if you have more experience, with lots of color photos, good info about the postures, meditation, breathing etc, plus a cd with the whole class on it:

Shortcut to: http://www.yogatoday.com/
This site claims to have a different class every day so you can do it at home.

I would have to recommend most any of the Rodney Yee videos.
He seems to have a great way of explaining things. A good sign of an instructor is one who you don't have to constantly look at the TV to understand the move. He's good at this to me and has a nice soothing way of talking I like. :D

Burgespj--the flexibility will come. Be patient, don't strain, breathe, breathe, breathe.
I started years ago with kathy Smith's New Yoga basics and still like it. Her husband, Rod _______? with GAim, has a good video Yogad for maturity that I also like alot. I agree, too, about Rodney Yee, and also like Susan Deeson's Yoga for women, tho' itls a little tougher. Therre's a wonderful video from Kripalu with Stphen cope, which is a little longer (90 min.), but I always feel really wonderful clear through after I do that one. My least favorite is Kundalini Yoga. Enjoy! Yoga is wonderful and goes right along with RAW in promoting health in body, mind, and spirit. Good luck!

I like the Yoga For Dummies dvd. I checked it out of the library, along with some others. It was the best, by far, for a beginner like me.

I really love Richard Hittleman's 28 day yoga course. At the end of last year I sent out the intention that I would find a new yoga guru. Within a few days I heard about this little (1970s) paperback, bought it from Amazon for next to nothing, and started on Day 1. I kept to it, and now, 9 months or so later, I do the three-day sequence of routines daily. My flexibility has increased amazingly and I am so happy with this regime, because each daily sequence takes only 15 minutes, and is easy to slot into my day. I'm still improving.

This is not a 'glamorous' option, but it has worked so well for me. I'll always be grateful to have found it.

Good luck with whatever system you're 'guided' to.
