View Full Version : Young Coconut Meat?
Has anyone ever successfully froze a whole young coconut before or just its meat and had it be ok to use for later?

Here in hawaii - we have always done it separately -
coconut water in one container
meat in another. Although - my gf did freeze them both together once with no ill effects.
I would try it just to see what happens! Let us know if you do try it!!

Hi Morn, I have special ordered a case of coconuts B4 & got them home & opened them & froze the meat & used the water for smoothies. I put the water in a pitcher in the fridge. It saved on storage space.
Now , I only used the frozen meat for smoothies so I'm not sure you could do noodles with them, but I would def open first as I think once the whole coconut is frozen, It would be really hard to thaw & open.
Hope this helps, :)

HEY http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s43/FireStar_830/hidot.gif BEAUTIFUL!!! So... you don't think it would be possible to freeze the whole coconut and then set it out and let it defrost? I find this quite an interesting experiment! Of course I don't have room in my teeny tiny freezer for whole coconuts - but it's an interesting idea!
I was wondering if it might crack open if it's frozen with the water inside? hmmm.... http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s43/FireStar_830/scratchchin.gif now someones got to try it ... just to see what happens!!!

Hi Hula Gal, See ya snuck away from work for a moment. YAYYYYY !!!!!!!!!!
I think it would be soooo hard to open plus maybe the meat would stick to the shell. That's just my thoughts as I'm no expert on the coconuts.
I think someone should try it.:) I don't have one or I would!

I ended up eating my last one before I could try it but definately in the future it is worth a try. I will wait till they go on sale to try it though.

When I get my case of young coconuts each week, I break them open (all of them), drain the juice to make coconut water kefir and scrap the meat out to put in my daily smoothies. I divide the meat up into my smoothie freezer bags and freeze them. The meat is just as good thawed as it is fresh.

I tried by draining the water to use in a smoothie but didn't want to take the time/mess to open and stuck the whole (empty) coconut in the freezer
when i openned it later, the meat was blueish/purple and seemed questionable...smell/texture etc....so I had to toss it
my method to open is a screwdriver whole in the bottom, drain it completely and then use the bottom corner of a large kitchen knife to go banging around the top until it cracks

I have some in the freezer now. I thawed one out, cut it open the normal way and it was just fine. I will add that the meat separates much easier that way too, but it does have a somewhat different texture, not sure I would like it for anything but smoothies, but then that is what I mostly do with thai coconuts anyway.

I use a small ax (outside) and cut a an opening to drain the water and scoop the meat.
