Hi All-

Couple of green smoothies questions:)

1. How long do they stay good? ( Nutrient and taste wise)

2. Also, is therea anything that can be added to them to extend their freshness?

Thansk!

Three days max they will remain fresh. They are constantly losing nutrients from the moment you make them so it's way better to make and drink.
I can't think of anything to help them retain their freshness.
I would (do) make and drink them right away.

Maybe add lemon juice to let them stay a little longer. But it's definitely best to drink them fresh within the same day. Oh! and chilies :) I love chilies in there, it just gives it a little extra kick.

Veganforlife - three days?? wow! I never let my sit more than a day - i usually wont drink them after about 5 hrs and when they turn browner tho - i get grossed out - i hope that stops :)

Lemon juice is a good idea - and it would probably be tasty too :)

3 days according to Victoria Boutenko - but I have never even put mine in the fridge. I make 'em and drink 'em.
Lemon will help them from turning brown...and it does taste good

Lemon and lime both work for this. A trick I learned when I was a cook many years ago, was to splash orange juice over the huge bowls of cut fruit we served. That stopped the fruit from becoming brown, and kept the fruit fresh looking. It's the citric acid in lemons, limes & OJ.

I usually drink my green smoothies with 24 hours. It's helpful sometimes to make a smoothie in the afternoon and make enough for breakfast in the morning...helps when you are in a rush in the morning and you get a nice nutritious breakfast.

Some tips to keep them longer because yes, they can last a few days....or more :)

1) Yes, the citrus can help.

2) I store mine in glass mason jars and fill them to the top to have as little oxygen as possible in there.

AND/OR....

3) Food Saver! Here is one the best tips ever for Raw food. Get a Food Saver® and make your life a million times easier with Raw food prep. When I make a soup or smoothie that would normally last up to a few days, I use my Food Saver and I now have a shelf life that is longer…up to a week (they say it’ll last longer than that, but I just always end up eating/drinking the food before I can see how long it could actually last). I do this with salad dressings, soups, desserts, fresh juices, smoothies, sauces and so much more.

It’s best to use glass mason jars for this, so you’ll need the mason jar attachment from Food Saver. You can find this online at www.FoodSaver.com. I can’t say enough about how fantastic this tool is in your kitchen. With the Food Saver, you can make extra batches of things and “Food Saver” them so they last longer, meaning you can spend less time in the kitchen.

Cheers!

PS...I posted a couple of easy and really great Raw recipes on my blog for everyone to try. Also, I've been spending some time in the kitchen this weekend and created a few more that I'll post later this week. Enjoy!

Kristen, I have been wanting to get a vacuum system...you've just reinforced my resolve! One question...does the mason jar attachment come with the V2440 model?? Do you have to buy special mason jars, or does any mason jar work?

I went to the site and there were several items that appealed to me out of stock. Were you responsible for that? ;)

On another note, I have made up green smoothies in the morning before I go to work, and by afternoon they just don't quite taste as good. But I drink them anyway!

Buy a Foodsaver, That is a Vacuum Sealer and it has a wide mouth mason jar Sealer. So you can put your smoothie in a mason jar and Suck out all the air and it will keep much longer Doug in Calif.....

Hi :)

I prefer the wide mouth mason jars, but you can get an attachment for both the wide mouth and the narrower mouth.

Buy the jars at any hardware store typically or walmart, grocery store, etc. Try this link for the attachments http://www.foodsaver.com/Products.aspx?CategoryID=554

There is one for the wide mouth ($10) and one for the narrower size jar ($9). I have them both. I would call the company and place your order on the phone, just to make sure you get everything you want.

Have a great day!

My other suggestion for work and smoothies is this.....Have you tried the Travel Blender? This could be useful for you. It's on Amazon for less than 50 bucks...Tribest Personal Blender - PB-100 Blending Package (with new S-Blade Assembly). Make your smoothies fresh at work.

Take some produce with you to work with your washed greens or just fruit...whatever you choose to have that day.
