So what is the deal with them? Are they dyed? Are they okay to sprout and eat raw?

No, they're not dyed. And they need to be boiled to make them safe to eat. The only beans that are safe to eat raw are mung and chickpeas.

I have been eating sprouted lentils several times a week for several years, and my body as well as my taste buds love them! If you're not reacting to them, they're probably fine.

I have read specifically that lentils, mung, adzuki, and chickpeas are good raw, and that black beans, kidneys, and other large beans like Northern are not. I would guess peas would be okay, since sugar snap peas are okay to eat raw. And peas aren't exactly the same as beans. I'm not a bonatical expert, but YKWIM.

I have read that kidneys are problematic raw. I have first hand experience that black beans are problematic....first week raw I sprouted black beans and made a pate'. I was reminded every 20 minutes for the rest of the night that I should never, ever do that again.....

Although I don't eat sprouted beans currently, garbanzos, mungs, adzukis, lentils, and peas have all been great. Sprouted garbanzos make a wonderful hummus.

I too read that the only beans safe to eat are mung, aduki, chickpea and lentil. Peas are safe of course because you can eat them raw and unsprouted.

I've heard of lots of people throwing up after eating sprouted black beans, but Juliano uses them in his recipe book.

Black beans contain the most antioxidants so I have a packet but I've been too scared to sprout them yet.

Maybe fermenting them would make them safe???

Does anyone know if black-eye beans (also known as black-eye peas) are safe? I know people say only the 4 listed above are safe, but some people do eat others...I wondered if that was one of them? My mum bought me some by accident.

Kidney beans can kill you if you eat them raw.

I guess I do not consider lentils or yellow and green peas to be beans. Yes, they can be sprouted. Am not sure about the others but I will look for a link. Here's one on kidney beans.

This one also mentions soy beans.

Hmmm... I am not finding the other beans listed. Perhaps I am wrong. However, several people on this forum have said they have gotten sick from eating sprouted black beans.

So thankful to have seen this thread and all your posts. Recently picked up a bag of black beans with the intention of soaking/sprounting. Will donate them to the food drive.
