Hello all,
I am new to the Raw thing and after lurking for awhile, I took the plunge. I even got all of the toys (dehydrator, easysprouter, saldacco, and mini food processor, already have a juicer and my lovely magic bullet).
I was sitting in front of the tv and was reading the instructions for my dehydrator(just got it yesterday:p ) and I started noticing all of the food commercials.
Maybe I am more sensitive to it now that I am buying fruits and veggies and working hard at this raw thing. It was scary how artfully advertisers are making SAD food appealing. A commercial showing a Papa John's Sicilian pizza appeared as if it should have been part of everyone's everyday meal. The never ending pasta bowl from olive garden had the creamiest "smoked" mozzarella sauce being poured over fettuccine that i ever seen. My favorite was the new oreo pizza from dominos commercial. It is literally oreo cookies on a pastry dough. No wonder we in the US are dying from heart disease and diabetes. I only had the tv on for about 20 minutes and saw all of those commercials (dominos was on twice). Since I watch hgtv and law and order when I watch tv I guess I am not exposed to it as much.

I saw both the Olive Garden and that scary Oreo thing last night (even in a past life they disgusted me). My attention was also lured by the smoked mozzarella!

i wish such descriptive vivid commercials of crappy food were just banned  well, now i don't seem to be too influenced, but it's almost impossible NOT to get hungry from watching them!! they always trigger drooling in all my friends lol
i myself am from Ukraine and have not felt SUCH a strong effect- of course they make food look really good and intend for you to crave it, but it's just disgusting here in the US- every 2nd ad is about food food food, they just bombard you- and this is in the country with such a high rate of obesity!!
ahhh the Media :(

Honestly, I don't know if they make anymore food ads than they do other stuff. Maybe our attention is just drawn more to it? Think about car ads the next time you watch TV. It seems like ALL of them are for vehicles!

Oh yeah. Subliminal advertising. "They" know how to play us.
Then I love all the (legal) drug commercials. We (the U.S.) is the only nation in the WORLD that allows drug commercials on TV. That is criminal!!!
One more reason I don't watch much TV any more. The other main reason is news...

the other day i was cruising through a pregnancy site and there were ads for mc donalds new "healthy" kids meals featuring this annoying little blond child explaining how they "squeeze" the cows for milk but "don't worry, it doesn't hurt them". i can't even count the ways that ad was WRONG!!
speaking of the oreo cookie...i took my step son to the state fair and now the fried dough stands have fried oreos, fried snickers AND fried twinkies!!

you are right about the car thing. if they didn't cost soo much i would go get one now. who has 30k?
i went to the fair in the spring and they had fried everything as well. i still don't understand a fried twinkie. it seems that the heat would dissolve it. then again, a twinkie is 100% artificial so it might withstand the fryer.

Oh yeah, I've heard of all the fried this and that. Funny how these folks that come up with all this at our expense are laughing their way to the bank.
Doctors, pharmaceutical companies, advertisers, etc. All of 'em. Crooks!!!

This is one reason why I don't own a T.V. We haven't owned a T.V for 25 years.
Those commercials used to be SO annoying.

have you see fried coke up there yet? yes that's right fried soda. don't ask me how this guy did it. but only in texas is there a contest for the best fried something idea. he's won it 3 years in a row. It's only been going 3 years. this year he won it for fried cookie dough. the funny thing is, he isn't very over weight. no where near obese. just slightly over weight. he must have other's test out his creations. :)

This is a good reason to not have cable or watch tv!! (I won't even start on the news...)
I agree with Lucy, the only reason we have the tv is for my workout videos (and an occasional video for the kids).
I actually had no idea Dominos did a dessert pizza, but it doesn't surprise me!

that just makes me so sick. i just can't even put it into words... but what even makes me more sick is that some of my close friends see absolutely no problem with this food-crap going on.. other than- oh yea, it's fattening. Fat is only the TIP of the iceberg :(

How about the recent add for a new drug to treat leg cramps - two of the side effects mentioned were increased sexual activity and gambling ~ Cathy

Oh yeah, I've seen those. As if all of these people weren't getting paid to say that!!! Hah, I don't even take any medicine, let alone Tylenol. The advertisers must think the public is stupid!! One more reason to go raw, so you won't have to make the drug companies rich!!! Rant over now!!!Sciencegal:D :D

Do people REALLY think that those celebrities have or use the products they're paid to talk about? The "doctors" on TV are just actors too, but people believe they're really doctors.
Has anyone seen those commercials wehre the side affect could be death? I swear I've seen one that said that. I can't remember for the life of me what it was for though.

how starfire says about feeling sorry for todays ma's so do i ,
and i feel livid about the totally lost / powermad idiots that
make up the elite society (in my opinion an unannounced group -
that has control of government - tv - press - big business . all
invisibly controlled by this one secret group) that rules this kingdom
for turning the tv into a TOTAL BRAINWASHING DEVICE / ELECTRIC
WHIP that flashes a barrage of image after image (every second)
into our minds in effort to manipulate us into what to be or do .
ITS TOTAL ABUSE OF POWER , and i live to crush this group .
parents dont have much chance in fighting the tv brainwashing
by these idiots of their children whom flash image after image
of fattening / unhealthy foods into veiwers minds ,
IF I HAD KIDS I WOULD NEVER HAVE A TV IN MY HOUSE ,
itll just end up brainwashing a person / kid into being a physically
soft / over weight overeater . at this point im almost convinced
the elite society wants to keep people fat and weak because its
easier to bully them around into what to be in that state , it
makes for easier governing as our neo slave master elite society
manipulates its citizens around into their new world order design .
breeding themselves a new breed of worker / peasant for them
to live off of .

In my pre-raw days I tried a fried twinkie at a festival I went to and, at the time, thought it was surprisingly good, not what you'd think! Don't think I'll be trying to recreate that raw though! Food cues are the worst, as far as advertising goes. But I think the pharmaceutical advertising is criminal. Hell, I think the whole pharmaceutical industry is criminal. Another legal mafia as far as I am concerned.

09-07-2007, 04:15 PM
of course it is criminal
if you ever have doubts
ask a 70 year old how many
medications they take per day
and then try to get them to
STOP taking them
(i had to practically yell at my Grandmother to stop taking
her ACE inhibitor because it was causing her chronic cough)
it is not like the drug dealers
aka the docs don't have a replacement
medicine is the largest mafia out there
organized crime has nothing on them
even the drug reps wear nicely tailored suits
and in miami
(all of the women have a nice set to go with their suits)
they all do what they have to do to peddle their drugs to one doc or another
the drug that bothers me most that is advertised
EVERYWHERE is yaz and gardisil
come on
everyone knows that birth control pills are all the same
with the exception of a little less progesterone/estrogen or a little more progesterone/estrogen
NEXT
now with gardisil
how many young women walk around and
SPONTANEOUSLY get human papilloma virus
it is caused by too much boomchickawowwowwowwow
with multiple folks to get the cervical dysplasia which
MAY or may not proceed to cancer
correct me if i am wrong
whatever happened to just giving vaccines to prevent polio
why must we prevent odd occuring diseases
how many people really die from cervical cancer
that can be prevented by giving young girls gardisil???
lets attack lung/breast/prostate cancer
REAL KILLERS

I agree with the sentiment, but I don't know if I'd talk a 70 year old out of their ACE inhibitor because of the cough (which is a common side effect because of its mechanism of action)
:( I was a drug rep in a past life. I hate the industry a lot, but some people need their meds.

09-07-2007, 05:17 PM
they can switch you so fast from an ACE if you do have
the tail tail side effect of the persistent cough
without compromising its benefits
i definitely don't recommend throwing away
all of grandma's meds
but some docs just over prescribe
just because they are elderly
my grandparents don't ask questions and
figure well, i'm old, the doc knows what's best
with the aging baby boomers
i think things are going to change
people are a lot more educated about their health
my good friend's husband is a drug rep
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD money

I guess I'm lucky. I don't watch a lot of TV and usually the channels I watch don't have commercials.
I can't imagine making an Oreo more disgusting than it already is, but I guess that would do it. As a child, my mom would buy them on occasion. I would only eat the cream filling out and not the cookies. Then they changed the cream filling and I wouldn't touch them.
As an adult, I was staying with some relatives. They were at work and I was hungry. My car was in the shop and I had no transportation to get to a store. They lived out in the boonies with no shops around. They also didn't keep much food in the house, preferring to dine out. But they did have Oreos. Soggy Oreos because it was humid there. Normally I wouldn't touch the things but I was so hungry so I took one. Bad mistake. Couldn't get it out of my mouth fast enough.
