View Full Version : What's your FAVORITE recipe?

I just tried the famous chili recipe that has been floating around and was amazed at how delicious it was. I can't help but wonder, what is your favorite recipe? The quick, the easy, the gourmet, the juice, or dressings. The all time personal classics. I just convinced my hubby, who has a plethra of medical problems, to try going raw with me for a week. I need something to tempt him and make him see the light.

Here's my breakfast favorite, all tried and true, takes 3 minutes:
in a blender:

1 banana
1 apple
**1 fruit of your choice (papaya, orange, etc) or you can just omit the 3 rd fruit
1 T ground flax seed
juice from 1/2 to 1 whole lemon or lime (your preference, I like a whole lime because it makes me feel like on eating this on the beaches of Mexico...)

blend baby blend

drizzle honey over it and sprinkle it with chopped walnuts and some raisins.
If you don't have ground flax, you can at this point drizzle some flax oil on top. Gobble it up before your family wakes up and wants just "one bite", or double the recipe to keep the peace ;)

Alissa's stuffed portabella with guacamole recipe!!! So easy and i just cannot get enough of it. YUM!

my favorite smoothie recipe is 1 banana, and about a cup of frozen or fresh mixed berries, 2 tbsps. of ground flaxseed, and some water (or soymilk for the non-raw) blended up. If the fruit is frozen it is like a fruity milkshake!

And I also love raw eggless salad- don't have an exact recipe but i used cauliflower, avocado (for the "dressing"), a pinch of curry, onions or chives... hmmm.... don't remember what else, sorry :) i think there was a recipe for it on the forum somewhere though.

happy raw eating!

One of my favorite recipes is Shazzie's Wild Mushroom Fajitas. I still need to work out the kinks because her recipes calls for a lot of spices, which when dehydrated are too strong for me. But with Alissa's guac and sour cream recipes it really helps with my mexican food cravings.

I also like Alissa's marinated greens because I do get sick of salads sometimes.

My most fav raw food recipe is Alissa's Crepe's. Oh my... yum!!! I also love her Black Forest Cake, see the pattern here?? Desserts! Although the Onion Bread (listed on this forum) is also great, and Alissa's banana-flax crackers for a yummy treat with almond butter and agave with sliced strawberries on top is very good. So many favorite raw foods and so little time!

And not to forget making banana "ice cream" and adding different fruits to it like frozen strawberries or blueberries. So easy and so satisfying, I haven't eaten dairy products in many years now but imagine that if someone is craving dairy ice cream this would take care of that craving! Alissa also has a recipe in her book for Carob Sauce, I make this to put on top of the banana "ice cream" add some sliced fruit and top with shredded coconut, yum!

I heard they are tricky to make. Is that true?

I did not find them tricky, but placing the filling into the wrappers took a while. I finally drafted 2 of my children into helping me fill the wrappings.

Everything else was quick and easy to prepare. I used a saladacco to slice the turnips thinly. It worked great!

wheres the onion bread recipe? If you decide to make this, be sure you put your dehydrator either outside or in the garage ... your entire house will wreak of onions. Not a bad thing, but definitely overwhelming.

My favorite recipe is Alissa's Mock Salmon Pate. I like to make mini-appetizers out of it by putting a spoonful on a spinach leaf and then cutting up grape tomatoes into little bits and garnishing the spinach wrapped mock salmon pate with the tomatoes. Then I shovel it in and down the hatch it goes! YUMMMY!!

My favorite dessert recipe is her date-nut torte garnished with fresh strawberries and blueberries. SLURP!!!

Oh! And one more ... Allison makes this awesome Raw Pizza that she's brought to our potlucks. I tried to make it and never got past the Energy Flat Bread. It was a complete disaster. I have her recipe if anyone wants to attempt it. I guess I'm just not good at sprouting buckwheat!:(

Oh Victoria, you're funny! I'll have to show you how to make the flat bread. It's really not that hard. What did you have problems with?

I haven't seen you on the boards for a while, although I haven't been around that much either. Glad to see you back!

My favorites change all the time!!

I'm currently stuck on wraps -- using a large collard leaf, I pile up greens and something special and then some sauce and then roll up tightly like a big burrito. The "something special" is something like falafel or pate or a tasty dehydrated veggie mixture. For a week now, I've been using marinated mushrooms (any kind, but portabellas are especially tasty). The sauce can be a yummy dressing or guacamole. Depends on what taste I'm wanting. If I want Indian, I'll blend up some curry powder, cumin, coriander, garam masala. If I want middle eastern, I'll use tahini, lemon, oregano. Italian can be a basil pesto. Or maybe I'll blend together some sundried tomatoes.

And ... still addicted to the Butter Pecan Icecream, although I change it around almost every night. Usually leave out the honey, but, since I adored mix-in icecreams back in the day -- I almost always stir something crunchy in like nuts and/or my own raw granola. If I'm really insane, I'll grind up some cacao nibs and add it with some carob. But, I'm not crazy about cacao's effect on me ... and cuz it doesn't grind down to a fine powder -- so I use it seldom.

***A while back, there was a thread that started with an identical question as this one -- someone asked for everyone's favorite recipe. You might want to search for that one, also. A lot of people responded who have been raw for long enough now that they're not posting with the regularity that they were at that time.

Here's to good eating!

Doe

RawTruth, could the ground nibs be sifted? Just a thought.

RawTruth
05-02-2005, 11:43 PM
Hmmmm .... don't think so. They just don't grind down enough to have much if any "powder" -- they just stay kinda crunchy like ground coffee beans. Someone mentioned that maybe I need a new grinder, but I don't know; it grinds nuts just fine.

Thanks Allison. I either made the flat bread too thin or dehydrated it too long because it was stuck to the wax paper, curled up like a chip and when I tried to remove it from the dehydrator it just fell apart. I would love it if you could show me how to make it - the pizza is SOOOOOO yummy!!

yeeaay ,recipe success -I wasnt sure how it would be taken since it is no-bean AND lower fat ,also if you want add a small handfull of walnut halves for a "thicker" or a more nutty flavor along with the oil......glad you liked it :D

if you liked that you might like the no avo guacamole(I have trouble with fats)

say no to avo guacamole!!!!!

2 zuchinis (chopped)
2 small cucumber strips or "fingers"

blend well then add...

2 tbs of olive oil or 6 walnut halves
1/2 cup of cilantro
1/2 cup of tomato
1/4 c of lemon or lime juice
1 tbs of jalepino
1 1/4 tsp of salt
1 tsp garlic
1 tsp ginger (optional)
1/4 cup green onions

blend to a guac consistency (add the tomato in last so it doesnt become pastey)

I seriously cannot stop eating these: From "Living Cuisine":

3 C dried shredded coconuts
1 C soaked/pitted dates
3 Tb almond butter
2 Tb honey or maple syrup
2 Tb olive oil or coconut butter
1 Tb vanilla extract
1 Tb cinnamon
2 tsp nutmeg
pinch of sea salt

in a food processor:
coconut, dates, almond butter, honey/maple syrup, coconut butter/olive oil, vanilla, cinn., nutmeg, sea salt

take approx. 1 1/2 half Tb of the dough and press it on a teflex sheet with the bottom of a wet drinking glass

Dehydrate for approx. 12 hours on each side. She says to dehydrate it enough that the inside is moist. This batch lasted 2 days before I ate it all.

Beware, you will eat a lot of these!! This book is a very very good recipe book. Perhaps one step up as far as "hard recipes" than Allisa's

I absolutely went nutso over Alissa's Marinated Asparagus. I love cooked asapragus but never dreamed raw would be good. I thought it would be bitter. But the stalks are rather sweet and crunchy. I altered the recipe a little. I used only sundried tomatoes, no fresh ones. And I omitted the ginger and used curry powder instead. I marinated overnight and oh my gosh!!! I ate the whole thing between two meals that day. It was excellent and garlicky and spicy. I highly recommend it.

I just have to tell you, VeganVixen, that I finally got around to trying your hummus recipe and it is absolutely dynamite. It is now my favorite thing to eat. Since it's named "hummus" -- I was expecting a more bland taste, but this is so flavorful and full-bodied and tangy and .... wow! I wanted it a bit thicker than just two zucchini made it, so I threw in an avocado since I was out of zucchini, and I used 2 cloves of garlic rather than 4. Oh baby. I'm now using fresh crisp sugar snap beans to scoop the hummus up. I can't wait to get more zucchini to make more once this is gone.

Thanks, thanks, thanks.

I tried making flaxseed burritos awhile ago with cabbage leaves to wrap them in...it was a disaster...the leaves kept splitting. RawTruth, you have good luck with collard leaves? How do you make them stick...or do you just wrap it tightly? Thanks!
Heather

RawTruth
06-24-2005, 09:39 PM
Definitely -- fold the ends in, roll/wrap it tightly. Be sure to slice away the center stalk if there is one. The fresher they are, the better they wrap.

Still, they're not like burritos. They're ... like ... collard wraps! :D

When I use cabbage, I use the leaves more as "boats" to carry the filling rather than trying to wrap them since they're stiff.

Worst case, you can always pull out the knife and fork!

Have fun!

Please tell me how you make "bacon" from eggplant sounds interesting!

I found this on the from SAD to RAW site.

Bacon, Why Not

1 large eggplant, thinly sliced lengthwise (used a v-slicer)
3/4 c. oil (you can use less oil)
1 tsp. cayenne
2 Tbl. honey
4 Tbl. Ume Plum Vinegar (I don't remember using any vinegar?)

Marinate for 2 hours. Place on teflex sheets and dehydrate for 9 hours. Turn bacon over and dehydrate another 9 hours.

Yeah, it was discussed on this site earlier this year and tried by those of us who where around then. I don't put it on teflex, though. I put it right on the mesh sheets so that it dehydrates faster.

Just a question, though, No GMO -- do you dehydrate long enough for it to break easily like crisp bacon, or is it flexible? Also, do you peel the skin off first?

NoGMO!
07-20-2005, 01:30 PM
Raw Truth-
I've always peeled the skin off of my eggplants for any recipe- but I recently read somewhere(?) that it's more nutritious to consume the peels- I might try that soon. Have you tried the skins in any recipe?

as far as dehydrating time and texture, I usually end up eating it in about three stages as I get hungry- so naturally it's never lasted long enough in the dehydrator to reach a breakable state. it's always long gone before that point -

RawTruth
07-20-2005, 01:41 PM
Actually, the next time I make it, I intend to peel the skins off for the first time. When left on, it's almost impossible to bite through, so it makes the bacon rather hard to eat because the skin, which is now like a unchewably strong thread, gets in the way. I don't know if this makes any sense. There are some recipes in another recent thread for using eggplant in other ways; for those, I'm thinking that leaving the skin on may work. It's just that it's so tough and it's cooking that softens up (not for us!!).

Thanks for the reply.
