View Full Version : Vita-mix Wet blade only vs. getting dry blade too

I'd like to get a Vita-mix 5000. Ok, so I'm not sure how beneficial it would be to get the dry blade. It's $399 for the 5000/wet blade and $479 for the Super 5000/wet/dry blade bought new. I've been using either the Magic Bullet, food processor or a regular blender to grind nuts/seeds. I also have a coffee grinder. I don't think that I necessarily need one, but my understanding is that it would make sauces and dry grinded ingredients smoother. I'm sure it would do it faster too. Perhaps it is a time-saver and the consistency of the end-product would be better. Just thinking out loud here because I don't have anything to compare what I'm getting now versus what I would have with a Vita-mix.
How much are you all using the dry blade?

I have had my VM for two wonderful years now and have had NO NEED for the dry blade and I do grind grains with no difficulty.
What I would suggest if you can id to purchase their set of three specially designed scrapers, they are about $6.
I would also suggest getting the new small jug for mixing smaller amounts. I have just bought this and am thrilled. It still uses the same tamper as the big jug.
Saying all this you dont NEED the scrapers or the small just they are just nice to have.
All the best, you will LOVE your VM.

Oh, the compact container is a good idea! I can definitely use that. I'll make sure to get the spatulas too. Thanks! :)

Cali, I use my dry container also, but obviously not as much. I would say the main difference in how it grinds things like grains, seeds, etc., is that it's capable of more quantity than a coffee grinder. It is money you could save and do without if you like, and keep donig small batches in your coffee grinder for approximately the same quality.
eachpeach, I cheaped out on the small container, as the demo guy said that the big just is designed to also blend small quantities. I gather it's mainly the ease of getting things out of a short jar. So if you want to save that money too Cali, you'll probably be fine. The small jar was more expensive than the grain jar, somewhere over $100. For me it's also cupboard and counter space that are issues, and just generally liking to have less "stuff."
I also love my VitaMix!

Thanks exurb. I think that since I'd get the spatulas, that would help with getting food out of the large container. Space is a commodity in my kitchen, so perhaps I will just get the large one. I can always get more later. Decisions, decisions.... :)

I agree, the small one was just an indulgance ($87) and it is about getting small amounts out. Also If I make very small amounts there would be nothing left in the bowl as it would completly cover the side walls and lid and there would be nothing to pour, ha ha ha!
However neither "additional container" are needed at all! I was very happy for two years before I bought the little one.:)
I bought the dry blade and haven't even used it once. But since reading this thread the next time I have to grind flax seed I will use it since I had to do several small batches in my coffee grinder when I made my raw pizza crust. I think you can live with out it.
