Ive had deep dark undereye circles for as long as i can remember regardless of my sleep levels. Since going raw for a little over a month i haven't really seen much of a change in them and am wondering if there is anything any of you guys have implemented to have them go away?

i was reading and too much potassium (i.e. bananas) can cause dark circles in some. that could be it bc i always ate a ton of bananas so ill try cutting down to one a day.

Deep undereye dark circles can also be genetic.
Many Mediterranean type folks just have them.

My 9 year old gets them when he is tired. Can't they be caused by allergies too?

I too had dark undereye circles. But since going raw over a year ago, they have gone away. Go 100% raw - give it more time then a month and two words: green smoothies. I'm sure they didn't appear in a month's time. Be patient.

I was reading that one of the big causes is sinus congestion. I have them too and started using my neti pot more regularly and it is helping.

Allergies do cause dark circles under the eyes. I had them for years until I went raw and then they went away after about a month on raw.

The dark circles are usually a mineral deficiency. It can be caused by a number of things (allergies, disease, fungal overgrowth, overabundance of certain minerals-thus resulting in too little of others, SAD diet, lack of sleep-which inhibits uptake of minerals etc.) They should go away being raw, but it can take time. IF you always had them you could be looking at correcting a significant imbalance. Being raw alone will do it-but it will take longer than if you supplement with high quality concentrated sources. You may also be looking at healing time before your body can recognize and utilize them. You will get there though!

yea im gonna start drinking green smoothies every day. i find that the less high sugar fruits, like tropical ones, i eat, the less apparent they are too.

I hear Vitamin C is great for skin clarity and brightness. Maybe try some lemon juice or some citrus and paint on the juice under the skin. It does work for sun spots and other dark skin blemishes.. maybe it could help brighten the skin around the eyes. Don't get it IN your eyes ;)

hey good idea, thanks!
I've read somewhere that dark undereye circles and the functioning of the eyes are a sign the liver's not functioning properly. Try google it up. I think I read it in Chinese medicine, having dark circles myself. That area seems to be connected to liver and kidneys. My liver is indeed not functioning optimal, I'm looking into that at the moment and am researching liver tea/herbs, food (have to be careful with too many fats), liver flush, liver packs etc.

In "Raw Food Real World", they say: Plagued by puffiness or dark circles under your eyes? Both can be improved with the right intake of potassium (for lid edema) and organic sodium (for those grim under-eye smiles). Just remember there's no magic pill, living or otherwise, for not getting enough sleep.

organic sodium? as in organic salts??
I wondered the same thing. I don't know. I typed what was in the book. I didn't see any other references in that section to organic sodium. It could be elsewhere though.
I used to have dark circles and just thought it was genetic. I went on a wheat-free diet for a year and they went away completely. I went back on the wheat/SAD and they didn't return.
Now I get them when I'm tired/too stressed.
I do eat a lot of celtic sea salt, in my water, on my food, etc. I truly believe it's good for you. I have no double-chin as a result.

i was reading some more and i found that applying fenugreek powder (made into a paste) under the eyes can help get rid of undereye circles. i think mine are going to be harder to get rid of bc i have hollow eyes, the skin is very thin and hollow around my eyes and the dark circles just make me look dead and sunk in with a dark halo around my eyes. too bad there isn't a way to somehow get more fat under my eyes lol. im going to try the fenugreek. i also put some fresh orange juice on my face to brighten it up in general. i think i should stop using all my store bought cleansers and just use homemade ones made from whole foods and herbs. maybe my face wont look so rough then.

It's only Day 27 all raw for me, and I see (pardon the pun) a huge difference in my eyes in general.
I suffered with deep, dark puffy circles with wrinkles under my eyes, but now the darkness, I can truly say, is gone and so is my under eye concealer, thank goodness. The makeup didn't really hide it much, but I thought it did. Raw takes care of it much easier I would say.
For sure, it was raw that made the darkness go bye bye!

Dark circles can be helped with green smoothies, liver/colon cleanses.
Eat tons of probiotics (kefir, coconut kefir...)

organic sodium is carbon based sodium, which means that it must be chemically bonded to something living (life is full of carbon bonds). so organic sodium would be sodium from celery, leafy greens, seaweed, etc. NOT celtic sea salt. personally i dont really have the best reaction towards sea salt. but everyone is different right?

oHhhhh... ah~HAAaaa.... thanks for explaining that Raw Surfer... or there would've been a bunch of us washing in, drinking, chewing, and rubbing celtic sea salt all over us and then complaining that we're retaining water! heheheeee.... http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s43/FireStar_830/laugh.gif with me of course leading the pack!!!
hmmm... maybe that's why I'm craving celery lately -- of all things - celery... I have the eye lid edema and the under eye puffiness goin on ... hate it.
I was also told about the liver deal - that its a sign of the liver not functioning correctly - or the liver being deficient of something -- ???
so that's when I did the liver cleanse and it literally kicked my arse... I was down for 3 days... Passed an amazing amount of chaff.... a few stones - but that was it. (no pain - it just zapped my energy completely out of me - drained me dry...heh heh heh :D .... i know - bad pun!)
I was wanting to try another liver cleanse thinking maybe the fact that I was so affected means I need another one - but whhooooo~laaaaa.... it was hard on me so - I dunno if that means I don't need to do something so intense on my liver?? So instead I drink water and do nothing!! ;)

I have always had the circles very badly. Now that I am high raw they are much less. I always thought that they were allergies but I do believe that the TCM belief is that they are related to liver toxicity. I know I have liver toxicity due to the pain I have suffered in that area and all the Rx I have taken and symptoms known to TCM like itching in a spot on insole of foot that is listed as liver toxicity on the chart. I was off all Rx for a long time and the liver pain went away as well as the itching and the eye circles. Now I am on 1 Rx (had a few a couple of weeks ago) and the itching is back, the pain also - and I suppose I should look in the mirror for the circles.
So I buy the liver toxicity theory totally. I am doing sea salt now. I was not getting enough salt from celery etc. I have strong salt cravings but perhaps it is due to adrenal problems. My weight loss has stopped so maybe I am retaining water?
I am afraid of doing the liver cleanse due to my body being so imbalanced and me having been so ill. I want to do it but am terrified.

Have you tried coffee enemas? I heard they are EXCELLENT to cleanse the liver ALOT!!
And also drink coconut kefir with meals to help cleanse liver as well.
")
I have read through these responses but am hoping to get a little more information. I realize I have high standards -- but I really want to glow with health and vibrance. I feel that having less than perfect skin or undereye circles detracts from that.
My skin and purple under my eyes is MUCH better since I went raw... but still leaves some to be desired for me.
I keep reading about how the liver and kidneys are related.
Does anyone have any other information related to these problems?
I have recently begun using Vitamineral Green, which has probiotics and some dried seaweeds. I believe it will help some. Does anyone have experience with that?
I'm also eating celery regularly now, but how much is a good amount? I'm going through about two bunches per week. Is that enough?
And how much seaweed and other mineral-rich substances is enough?
I get a good amount of sleep...
Just brainstorming here. I would really appreciate any additional answers to this question. :)

Give it more than one month....patience....I'm sure you'll see it reverse if this isn't something you've had all your life.
