Hey all. I'm Kate, new to posting, though I've been lurking here all summer. I could not tell you how the hell I came across this board - I think I did a google for raw food, found Shazzie's site first, and somehow made my way over here. Anyway, hi! I'm not much of a poster but everyone seems so friendly here I couldn't resist.

I'm from central nj, where New Yorkers invade every summer to go to "the shore." I've been trying to stick to high raw since I started learning about it, but I admit, it's been pretty hard - this summer I've worked three jobs to save up money, and in another week I'll be returning to school full time (with only two jobs, and by the end of September I'll only have one part-time-but-still-work-full-time-hours job at the mall.) So it's been difficult for me to fully prepare food and lug it with me everywhere. A lot of times I wind up buying SAD food just because I've forgetten my delicious fruit and veggies at home.

I go to college and currently commute, as I am living with my parents to save money. However, come the spring semester I will be transferring to a school further north and will be getting a room in an apartment with my boyfriend. (On a side note, I'm in the process of converting him, however he is currently looking for a job and does not have a lot of money to spend on healthy food. He seems open, though adament about not giving up alcohol or meat completely.)

A lot of terrible diseases run in my family - several types of cancer, diabetes, heart problems, kidney problems, glaucoma, etc etc - and I do NOT want to have any of them. My goal is to live forever :). My family just thinks I'm on another crazy diet, but then again they thought being a vegetarian was a phase... if only I could get them to eat healthy, I'd be so much happier. At the rate they are going I'm afraid they might not make it another ten years (they are both 60, and my father was very ill the last two years.)

Anyway, I'm 20, have been a vegetarian since I was 13 (much to my mother's dismay). I do smoke (have since I was 15, unfortunately), drink alcohol occasionally, and I'm a coffee fiend. I have been cutting back on all of these and eventually want to quit smoking completely. I really feel that raw is the way to do life - even just being high raw I already feel better and have more energy. So, there is my looong introduction, haha. I look forward to continuing to read all yours posts, though I'm afraid I'll probably still lurk most of the time.

I have to ask, where in central NJ? I'm from Edison and we also have a house in Long Branch. Where do you go to college?

Thank you everyone! I'm really looking forward to life on raw. And Starfire, congratulations on quitting! that is really awesome.

Bunny, I'm not far from Long Branch. I'm from Middletown, and I go to Brookdale right now. So you're really not that far from me, haha. small world. :D just curious, is your house in Long Branch a summer home?

Oh cool. I know some people in Middletown but they are younger than you (I used to babysit them and I think the oldest is in high school now). Yes, our house in Long Branch is primarily a summer home, though my parents do spend some weekends there (about once a month) in the cooler seasons. I was there for the past 3 weekends actually, but tomorrow I am driving back up to Connecticut where I go to school.
